Just for the record, my beef was with seeing someone who has been around and is smart and gives a damn about stuff, as I think I know you to be, throwing that bomb (whether intended or not) out there with what seemed like pretty cavalier indifference to what kind of effect it might have in the context of this discussion. When I saw who had posted it, I was surprised ... that's all. Show me a thread – any thread – where someone works racism in, that does NOT generate heat, and I'll show you a real damn rarity. If I was hypersensitive and missed the spirit of the comment you intended, my bad. It just struck me as in bad form. What strikes me as very GOOD form is your later post ... and brings me to what I fully intend (I know, I know) to be my last word on this thread: What had been missed, in large part, during this whole long journey, is the history here. By and large message board communities have very, very short memories. We tend to forget the nine-page discussion we had on the relative merits of Shane Matthews' throwing motion versus that of Brad Johnson ... and launch full tilt into a seven-pager on the same subject two weeks later -- quite often without even passing acknowledgment of some of the very good points made before. There isn't much we don't cover on these boards ... so really "new" angles stand out. I have no problem with that, in fact I like it. It is what drives these boards. I just happen to be one who forgets little of what I read here ... which is why I can't seem to motivate myself to expound on who or what circumstances I think are mostly at fault for our QB situation every couple of days. Been there. Talked about it. Done. Reason I mention this is, I remember the history behind the DTC stuff too. Had this thread been started by a new poster, or someone who hasn't been involved in this kind of thing so damn many times, I would have either deleted it or simply ignored it. But there is a long history here, one that I have yet to see fully acknowledged or owned up to by the principals. Every time this happens, it's the same thing: "Geez, guys, it was a joke." There's a cumulative effect ... and it gets to the point where it just ain't funny no more. Truth is, it gets old feeling like we have to explain the history over and over to justify taking steps that so many seem to see as censorship or unjustified over-reaction. If you have anybody blame the coach, and he isn't that bad of a coach. Shane rocks, and will come back next year. Even though the Skins have a tough year in 2003. He will do good.
