Since we're all in a festive mood, let's talk playoffs ...

This is the Redskins Playoff Tree:

(Yes, I had a lot of free time on my hands, but what the heck else was I going to do during the hour before the game today?)

The Redskins have two more games this regular season on two holidays: Christmas Eve and New Year's. The Redskins Playoffs Tree tells you who else we need to pay attention to. We are rooting against all the teams in the tree to lose. The teams at the top of the tree are most important, and those at the bottom of the tree are less important.

So now, after crushing Dallas, here's how the Redskins can make it to the playoffs:

Scenario 1: "In the driver's seat"

(1) Falcons lose to Bears (8:30pm tonight @ Chicago); AND

(2) Redskins beat Giants (1pm 12/24 @ Washington); AND

(3) Redskins beat Eagles (4:15pm 1/1 @ Philadelphia).

Scenario 2: "Help from the bottom of the tree"

(1a) Falcons lose to Bucs (1pm 12/24 @ Tampa); OR

(1b) Panthers lose to Cowboys (1pm 12/24 @ Dallas); AND

(2) Redskins beat Giants (1pm 12/24 @ Washington); AND

(3) Redskins beat Eagles (4:15pm 1/1 @ Philadelphia).

Scenario 3: "Help from Norval"

(1) Redskins beat Giants (1pm 12/24 @ Washington); AND

(2) Giants lose to Raiders (8pm 12/31 @ Oakland); AND

(3) Redskins beat Eagles (4:15pm 1/1 @ Philadelphia).

Scenario 4: "Help from the Panthers"

(1) Redskins beat Giants (1pm 12/24 @ Washington); AND

(2) Falcons lose to Panthers (1pm 1/1 @ Atlanta); AND

(3) Redskins beat Eagles (4:15pm 1/1 @ Philadelphia).

Scenario 5: "Bucs fall apart"

(1) Bucs lose to Falcons (1pm 12/24 @ Tampa); AND

(2) Redskins beat Giants (1pm 12/24 @ Washington); AND

(3) Bucs lose to Saints (1pm 1/1 @ Tampa); AND

(4) Redskins beat Eagles (4:15pm 1/1 @ Philadelphia).

Scenario 6: "Backing In"

(1) Falcons lose to Bears (8:30pm tonight @ Chicago); AND

(2a) Redskins beat Giants (1pm 12/24 @ Washington); OR

(2b) Redskins beat Eagles (4:15pm 1/1 @ Philadelphia); AND

(3a) Cowboys lose to Panthers (1pm 12/24 @ Carolina); OR

(3b) Cowboys lose to Rams (8:30pm 1/1 @ Dallas); AND

(4a) Falcons lose to Bucs (1pm 12/24 @ Tampa); OR

(4b) Falcons lose to Panthers (1pm 1/1 @ Atlanta); AND

(5a) Vikings lose to Ravens (8:30pm 12/25 @ Baltimore); OR

(5b) Vikings lose to Bears (1pm 1/1 @ Minnesota).

Scenario 7: "So ridiculous it doesn't even make the tree"

(1) Bears lose to Falcons (8:30pm tonight @ Chicago); AND

(2a) Redskins beat Giants (1pm 12/24 @ Washington); OR

(2b) Redskins beat Eagles (4:15pm 1/1 @ Philadelphia); AND

(3a) Cowboys lose to Panthers (1pm 12/24 @ Carolina); OR

(3b) Cowboys lose to Rams (8:30pm 1/1 @ Dallas); AND

(4) Falcons lose to Bucs (1pm 12/24 @ Tampa); AND

(5) Bears lose to Packers (5pm 12/25 @ Green Bay); AND

(6) Vikings lose to Ravens (8:30pm 12/25 @ Baltimore); AND

(7) Bears lose to Vikings (1pm 1/1 @ Minnesota); AND

(8) Falcons lose to Panthers (1pm 1/1 @ Atlanta).

...So that's the 7 ways the Redskins can make the playoffs. The easiest ways are Scenarios 1 and 2, where we just need the Falcons or the Panthers to lose one game either tonight or next week. Scenarios 3 and 4 are also pretty easy, except that we will be biting our nails for help in Week 17.

If you want the simplest scenario in one sentence: The Redskins are in the playoffs if we win out and either the Falcons or Giants lose one game.
