Training camp webcam?

Recommended Posts

An attack of the obvious just hit me. Why don't we arrange to have (or at least suggest) a couple of training camp webcams?

Surely this is something the team can afford. A good-quality webcam might run about $1K each. Cheap ones are of course much cheaper, but of lesser quality. Then you need a fast Internet connection.

It would be really great if we could somehow get this to work, though the techno-cluelessness of the team will probably prevent it, combined with the likely techno-cluelessness of the Carlyle net community.

Any support for this?

Yeah. Just a little ;) We've discussed this each offseason as long as I can remember... at least 3 years ago when we were all at TSN.

And while it's a nice pipe dream... it's never going to happen.

For the past 3 preseasons, non-DC residents would not have viewership to Redskins preseason games. We were all limited to scrambling to find a suitable online radio station that would broadcast Skins games. And believe it or not... there's a glut of Skins fans that tune in. So much so in fact... that it basically renders the broadcast useless due to net congestion. Many were relegated to listening to the opponent's local radio station for play-by-play. And those that have can attest to how difficult it is - even while appreciate of the fact that they can listen to it at all - to sit through some of the worst and biased announcing any diehard football fan should not have to endure.

And video compression ain't nowhere near the standard of audio compression.

Needless to say... the servers and bandwidth required to provide a service like live streaming media feed of training camp for such a length of time - CAN YOU JUST IMAGINE HOW MUCH DATA WOULD BE TRANSFERRING FOR 3 HOURS OF VIDEO FROM EACH SESSION? I'M ON CABLE AND IT STILL TAKES ME A FEW MINUTES TO DOWNLOAD 15 SECONDS CLIPS FROM PORN SITES. - would be mindboggling. It would take a mighty machine. And it wouldn't come at a cheap price to either the provider or the end user. And Dan Snyder doesn't have a reputation of giving away anything.

No, but Snyder is a marketing guy. You see this as a cost. If I'm Snyder, I see this as a marketing opportunity.

Heck, the team has now licensed its "virtual backdrop" technology for news conferences around the NFL. (This is to avoid printing sponsor banners on vinyl, and instead just use computer graphics on big video screens behind press conferences.)

We could have "Redskin TV" with rotating sponsor banners in the frame and links to the Redskin store for team products.

This is ridiculously easy to figure out. I wish Snyder would hire me and I'd do it for him.

I think Atlanta brings up a good point. You can go watch web cams of the Jersey shore and see all the young ladies stroll by in thongs, but we can't see the skins. I know it is kinda like getting my cake and eating it too. But if NJ div. of tourism can operate so many why can't the skins have a few? It has to be good PR for the franchise. I don't know why Snyder hasn't tapped into the technology of selling his product in this manner. Why not think of it as a tax right off on a new venue of advertising. Were suppossed to have an owner who was a long time fan,who really knew what it is like to be a Skin's fan. This should have been set up a few years ago if he was truly fan friendly. DH hit the nail right on the head. If he isn't making money on it, it just aint going to happen. Of course I would want it for free, but if I HAD to pay a 29.99 fee I would.

I think you guys are off on the reason there arent webcams. Isn't the basic deal that as long as training camp is free, no opposing scouts are supposed to come check it out, and they get in trouble if they do? Wasnt that one of the big negatives on the Snyder experiment?

So I'm guessing they'd just rather not let any "intelligence" leak out, which would be far easier if the stuff was just sitting on the web for grabs.

And BTW, I'm QUITE certain we could come up with an acceptable streaming audio solution for everyone.

In fact, here's a super ghetto idea. Half of the modems out there today support a voicemail feature, so you can use your phone as an answering machine. Let's set one up, and get it a number, so people can call in on their cellphone from training camp. Then, we just upload the "updates" to extremeskins.com for download. That way we get up-to-the-minute updates, and people dont have to remember everything they saw and capsulize it 6 hours later.

Wow . . . breathtaking.

In one fell swoop, you've combined cell phones, answering machines and streaming audio, creating . . . the world's worst audio ever heard.

Just kidding. Who cares about audio quality when it's the Skins!

TCO - That's way out there... yet it just might work. Assuming of course we got volunteers who (1) own a cell (2) can make it to camp every day (3) would be willing to overcome their fear of public speaking and be *the* voice* of ExtremeSkins (4) would be willing to use their voice mail as a storage medium for a few weeks (5) could find a way to access the voice mail via the internet and download the files (6) was readily accessible to download the file and upload it to our servers for our users.

I can perform function #6... but that's about all I can do from here
