Now you've done it. Now I'm seething about a call made 20 years before I was born. Thanks a lot. :P

    I’m still not over it.

10 year old me was watching at my grandparents’ house. My uncle, a Packer fan who hated the Skins, laughed hysterically at the call. He knew it was a bad call but was thrilled with the outcome as well as my anger.

About 20 years ago I met Jim Hart and made a point to ask him about that play saying, “So 1975, the Mel Gray “catch”.  We both know it wasn’t right?”  Jim smiled and said, “Looked like a catch to me”. But I could tell he knew I was right and was just playing along.

How was 1st rd pick a reach? Dotson had a 1st round grade and was best receiver left on board.

Dotson himself said he wasn’t watching the draft (he was watching NBA playoffs) because he wasn’t expecting to go until late 1st or even 2nd round.

He had a late first grade. Therefore he was a reach at 16.

Jonathon Allen’s been lobbying for him since the season ended.

He reportedly told Rivera “Phiderian’s a solid no non-sense lunchpail type that may never make a pro bowl but he will follow orders without complaining and he won’t be taking swings at folks on Monday night football either!”

So Allen is lead scout now?

    This organization is a laughingstock.

It's amazing. Maybe it's an omen that things thought "impossible" can indeed still happen. (Snyder removed, cough, cough.)

Either way, I watched the whole thing last night. Was so much fun. I wish they'd kept the commercials in for extra nostalgia, but the entire broadcast is basically here, so I can't complain.

Next on my list is definitely the 72 NFC Championship, followed for me by the MNF game in the mud and rain in 1976 where Eddie Brown returned a punt for a TD to win (vs. Cardinals). That was the first MNF game I stayed up for in its entirety, and I'll never forget it.

The '75 game would also be amazing, and the '73 Ken Houston stop of Walt Garrison on the goal line. Someone has to have those somewhere.

For now, though, this was just an amazing thing to discover.

You're right!  That '76 MNF game was incredible too.  A real mudbowl with well over 10 turnovers if I recall.  Like you I stayed up for that one as well.

Parents only allowed me to stay up on Monday nights for the Skins games.  For all other MNF games, I had to be in bed after Howard's Halftime Hilites.

  5. Ironically, just minutes ago I was looking at something on youtube and this game showed up at the top of my feed.  Words can't describe how my eyes lit up with excitement.

Like you, @Dissident2, this game is one of my 3 white whales.  The other 2 being the 72 NFC Championship game you mentioned and the 75 OT game vs Dallas at RFK when Kilmer sneaked in for the game winner.

My Easter Sunday is all set now.  I'm going to curl up on the couch and enjoy this gem of a game.  One of my all-time favorites.

This can't be serious. Our starting TE, WR2 and receiving RB were all injured and we had Taylor Heinicke throwing to these guys and they still put up similar stats.

Pittman, their WR1 is barely a WR2. His Oline was also crap. It was him and Taylor and that's it, unless you think a should be retired Hilton and Zach Pascal are weapons.

You've stated over and over you're in the tank for Wentz.  That's fine.  But this post is laughable.  Pittman and McLaurin are fairly equal.  This board may not like that, but it's true.  He's just inflated here because he's all this team has had for a long time.  The Colts OL is good.  Taylor proved that.  There are claims that they weren't good in pass pro but some of that is on Wentz too with his refusal to give up on a play.

As it stands now, Wentz's new OL and receiving corps is a push compared to last year, but with much less of a running game.  Which currently trends towards less production from him.

I hope he can give us that. We will see.

FWIW, I agree with you.  I watched a lot of Colts games last year.  Wentz was, well, average at best.  8 games he threw for under 200 yards.

The idea that the WFT will suddenly be throwing the ball down the field makes little sense.  He didn't do it much last year at all with a similar WR corps.  The Colts were 28th in the NFL in receiving yard/game, ahead of only the Eagles, Panthers, Giants, and Saints. Wentz's contribution to the Colts winning games last year was turning around and handing the ball off to Taylor.  And that's the reason I watched Colts games.  I was fascinated with their throwback, smashmouth approach.  They'd line up and tell the other team, "We're running the ball down your throat", and they'd do just that.

My guess is that unless the Commanders employ a similar running game, this latest experiment will likely flame out quickly.

Good point...I think many longtime "fans" have become team "followers" (I heard that on Sheehan's podcast and it accurately describes me). I'm still interested in news about the team, but I don't root for them. The Snyder stuff (as I've been pretty vocal about - probably to the annoyance of many) has made it so that I can't actively want this team to win. But I follow some of their headlines, I keep up with the drama that follows them, and I still follow the NFL. But I don't tune in on Sundays...we watch RedZone instead.

And, from the time I was 5 until about the time I was 45, Redskin Sundays were rituals to me. I'd actually spend time deciding which gear might give them a slightly better karmic chance of winning and for a while I'd avoid plans if I could get out of them.

Nodded my head in agreement reading this post.

This is where I'm at too.  I follow the news of the team on this board (primarily the off the field stuff) but I'm no longer a fan.  Gave up season tickets about 5 years ago, quit watching games on TV a couple of years after that.  I too watch the Redzone on Sundays when I'm at home though I've found with my Sundays now free I'm more apt to go anywhere and do something outside of the house if weather permits.

Became a fan in 1971 because I loved watching Larry Brown and Charley Taylor play.  No matter what the future holds, I'll forever enjoy the memories, both good and bad, that this franchise has given me over the many years.

Clearly an act of desperation as usual. This stinks of McNabb.

Agree. They went after Wilson with 3 1’s, failed, and then panicked and overpaid for a QB who was let go by the coach under whom he had his greatest success after just 1 year.

The McNabb comparison is valid. My first reaction was this is the QB comparison of the TJ Duckett trade.

I’d love to play poker with this front office. They’re just not good.

Not gonna happen. Washington is way too important of an NFL market for them to do that. Theres numerous reports of the NFL being upset with Dan and his erosion of the fan base because of how important the market is. VA is practically already offering a billion dollars and it will be passed with support from both sides its pretty much done. So they arent going anywhere.

Why not? LA Rams moved to St. Louis and Raiders moved back to Oakland in 1995 and LA was without a team for 20 years.  Los Angeles was every bit as important as an NFL market.

I'm not saying it will happen or is even likely at this point.  But history shows it's not impossible.

  11. This one stings. He and Larry Brown are the reasons I became a Skins fan.

About 10 years ago I stopped in a local bar and Charley was there. Had a fun group discussion at the bar. When I left I looked behind me to see him leaving behind me. We walked to our cars together shooting the breeze about nothing. I was on Cloud 9

This feels like the final step in a long grieving process over something that died years ago.

It's not just about the new name or uniforms. This is the culmination of a long history of misery. Do you want more of that in your life?

Agree.  From my perspective, today was the funeral held long after the franchise's passing.  Truly a "final nail in the coffin".

  13. Interesting thoughts @Burgold

I've been reflecting a good bit in recent weeks on my fandom.  Without going into the details of the why's, I think the last remaining shred of any interest I have in this organization is solely based on location.  Every day I drive home from work I see the practice bubble in Ashburn.  But that's really it.  Soon, I'll be retiring and moving away from the area.  At that point I think that last remaining tie I have to the Washington franchise will be severed.  I have an idea where my retirement will be and it opens the door to 2 somewhat close by teams.  Or I may choose to not be a fan of one team at all.  That's something that kinda has to happen naturally.

Has anyone seen the possible site at Dulles?  I fly out of there every other week and if they're talking about Metro being the reason, where will they put the Stadium?  The Metro line is attached to the Parking Garage and there is no land next to it.  You have the runways on one side and the Marriott and Commercial buildings in the other the nearest plot of land is about 2miles away and if that's the case you're still making people walk a long distance to get to the Stadium.  Just interested to see how they would use that land and Metro.

I believe the plot being discussed is near the next Metro stop west of Dulles, Loudoun Gateway.  There is enough land near that station.

FWIW, the local Loudoun Time-Mirror online site released an article a couple days ago that the WFT had contacted the Loudoun Board of Supervisors seeking a meeting to discuss the stadium.  The chairwoman of the board said a meeting would be scheduled.

  15. For clarification, it's "Loudoun" with a "u" before the "n".

Having lived in Loudoun for 13 years now, it absolutely is part of the DMV area.  And there will be Metro service in the very near future (if Metro can ever get their safety act together).  We're talking months, not years.

All that being said, I absolutely don't want the stadium here.  But I fear that it's headed in the direction where it will be in Loudoun or Prince William County.

  16. Started my career at a job in DC that fall.  I could tell you in great detail where I watched all 16 games (and it was at about 8 or 9 different places).  Went to both playoff games.  Met Joe Gibbs at a book signing.  (He liked my tie and asked where I got it.)  So many other great personal memories of that year.  In fact, to this day, if I'm unable to sleep at night, my go-to move to relax is to bring up the many positive memories of that football season.  Works like a charm every time.
