Collins was terrible last year, now he's coming off a severe injury. I love Curl, at SS. We don't know if he can do as well at FS.
My fear is death by three-step drop as teams negate our past rush with quick hitters. Many to tight ends and running backs which are two positions we have never been able to cover well. It also has to be proven that they can stop the run.
I see the base defense as a 4-2-5 with Collin/Curl/McCain all on the field with Davis and Holcomb at LB. I also see a lot of press coverage to help negate the quick throws.
Collins/Davis/Holcomb instead of Bostic/Holcomb/KPL covering the short game is a step up.

Having Saadhiq be the Ty Nsecke-type swing lineman this year, learning as much as he can about G and T spots, and then step in as the starting RG next summer when Scherff inevitably tries to find greener grass on the other side of the fence, is an absolute great scenario for us.
That's how I see it playing out as well.

Do I have this right, Davis has always been with the 1st team at MLB, and Bostic with the 2nd team at MLB? Neither have switched, and neither have done WLB or SLB spots?
I've been hearing Bostic at SAM.
Interestingly the 2nd string MLB on the depth chart is Hudson. I thought he would be at WLB.
I don't put too much stock in any of that though.

Interesting to see Hudson listed as the MLB behind Davis instead of as an OLB.
I don't put too much into these as I still think the base defense is going to be a 4-2 with McCain/Curl/Collins all on the field at the same time but I will wait and see.

Especially being the 2nd year in the system for most of the players...that's gonna help a lot.
Most overlooked aspect of this defense. No longer thinking what to do but just executing.-

I think a lot of you are overthinking the uptick in vaccinations.
Most of these guys are young. It really comes down to just getting them in the building and offering it.

Can we stop with this narrative? Tampa picked up a workmanlike win against an inferior team. The transitive property isn’t very accurate. The Bucs could’ve beaten us by three TDs if they needed to.
Ah yes the old "we could beat them by more but we don't want to" approach to football. Played on a lot of teams that did this and I'm sure that's how NFL teams approach games as well.

Well that last line reg. our D summed up our playoff game perfectly. We went up against a great OL and got stonewalled, who also happened to have the GOAT at QB behind them.
Still the toughest game TB had in all of the playoffs.-

I could be wrong, but I think Roullier is a particularly good run blocker. He and Scherff are a dynamic inside tandem for the run game, and they are very reliable block winners. The problem with our run game is a combo of scheme/play calling and a thin running back room. Setting the coaching issues aside--and they were certainly a factor last season--talent is still a big limitation. Gibson is our only above replacement level RB and he's not built to be a workhorse. He's got dodgy vision/anticipation and he's never carried a run game for a season in his football career, especially not anything close to a 17 game NFL season (plus hopefully playoffs). McKissick and Barber are JAGs. Replacement level players with zero dynamism. The only plus trait McKissick has are his hands, and neither he nor Barber are capable of beating even slower LBers to the edge without successful misdirection, nor will they be getting more yards than what's blocked for them.
IMO we are going to skew super pass happy this season and we're going to need our receivers to be dynamic in order to get around our lack of balance. Going super pass happy with average personnel is not a recipe for a ton of success. I think we're going to try and use a horizontal passing game and a lot of receiver runs to substitute for a normal run game. Roullier and Scherff are going to have to kill it in the run game so that we get those easy and reliable reads for Gibson in order to get chunk yardage on early downs. I'm also hoping Cosmi gets on the field at RT and does well in the run game--at least as good as Moses but hopefully better--and that Thomas is a more reliable blocker this year. Bates could be. Then hopefully between Schweitzer, Charles, and Flowers one of those guys will take hold of the LG spot and shine. That's potentially a pretty good line. Hopefully good enough for us to be efficient and stay in front of the chains and resist the urge to give up on the run game, which will be in our nature.
Define "normal run game" in 2021?

While the D-Line has some great individual parts, in reality they all benefit from the sum of all being greater than each individual.
IMO the only two worth opening the vault up for are Young and Sweat. Any interior lineman will benefit from those two dominating on the edges. If Allen leaves there is not a huge drop-off going down to ION or Settle. Take away Young or Sweat though and the whole line will feel the impact.
Regardless, tough choices are coming. Which guy(s) ultimately leave remains to be seen but there will be one or two we won't like to see go but simply can't spend 50% of the cap on one positional area without hurting the team.

I'm really trying to figure out how JD went the top of the list for DROY so fast. Don't get me wrong, that's awesome. But I'd think his relative inexperience would make people wary about how much of an impact he would have in year 1.
Maybe that's offset by his extreme athleticism and getting to play behind possibly the best D line in the NFL?
It’s one of the easier positions to play as a rookie and he will be behind a dominant line with a track record of success amongst the coaches.-

I really don't pay much attention to salary cap stuff anymore.
It really is pointless. Snyder has the cash to make it not matter. He’s just never kept personnel people that could take advantage of that for long enough. -

Yeah JDR made it clear Collins is a safety. He concluded the interview segment on Collins by saying ‘that doesn’t mean he won’t be playing in the box closer to the line is scrimmage, which well at times will be like a LB’
This has been my guess going forward the team will be in 4-2 with Curl/Collins/FS as the base defense.
A lot of man concepts and blitz packages.

I was a little uneasy when I heard Del Rio say he didn’t have a ‘set’ position for Jamin Davis. That tells me the LB position is still in flux from last year.
The LB’s will be the best of Collins, JHC, Davis, Holcomb
You made me pick I’d say:
Will: Collins/JHC
Mike: Davis/Bostic/Mayo
Sam: Holcomb/JHC/Bostic
I wouldn’t be shocked if JHC starts here however.
I fully anticipate “Big Nickel” to be the base this year however with a lot of man concepts.
Davis and JHC the starters with Holcomb backing up both spots and Collins in the slot.
Edit: Read the DC’s quotes after this post. I think he spilled the beans that “Buffalo (big) Nickel” will be the base defense. Also the discussion that Davis will learn Sam and Will signal this as well. In base the two positions are so drastically different that you’d have specific skills in mind for each position. In Nickel they are interchangeable and come down more to comfort.

Any thoughts about Beau Benzschawel ? I was expecting some comments but just crickets since. Is he just camp fodder do we think?
Like most WI linemen, he is limited athletically but a mauler in a phone booth. I see most FA pickups from this staff the same, they are looking to create as much competition as possible. I see this as competition with Ismael for the swing C/G roster position.

It’s interesting that we let go of Caleb Brantley who opted out but not Josh Harvey Clemons. Also kind of surprised that Moss got cut.
I still have suspicion the team is high on JHC-

Yep I think so too. When you can get a pass rush like ours it makes sense to play tight press man coverage to force quick bad throws.
Also means I think whatever LB we get has to be able to run with TEs downfield in man coverage.
I think we will see a 4-2 big nickel or 46 defense as base so Curl will handle the TE’s -

If Roberts is supposed to be Moreau's replacement, that is a definite downgrade.
I hope he's expected to be further down the ladder than Moreau was.
Both moves at CB show the team will like to run more man concepts next year. There is definitely a method to what they are doing.
Size and man skills is what they sought.

The "Patriot Way" has worked nowhere without Tom Brady, including Bill himself, who has a winning percentage of 46% without Tom.
This is always ignored for some reason.
