  1. Try a Heavy Seas Peg Leg Stout. It's not as malty, as the Sam Adam's, but it's very enjoyable.
  2. It was excellent. The BBQ was very good. The band was good. The beer was great! I did not care for the cask versions of Loose Cannon, (they had 2 different oak casks of it), nor did I really care for any of the cask beer. I don't mind warmer beer, but it's just too flat for me. The "mouthfeel" was similar to what you get in a nitro-poured beer. Not my cup of tea. They did have a pumpkin ale, that was aged in bourbon barrels, which was excellent. That was pleasant surprise, as don't care for pumpkin ale. I stuck to the Peg Leg Stout and Small Craft Warning. I didn't have any regular Loose Cannon, as I have a keg of it here at home.
  3. Truthfully, it's a mixed blessing. Loose Cannon is one of my all-time favorites but 15 gallons of 7.25% beer can dangerous Lately, my house beer has been Victory Hop Devil. With the lower ABV, it's more of a session beer than the Loose Cannon. I actually ordered a keg of Hop Devil, but the distributor didn't have any, (and I didn't feel like waiting), so they hooked me up with the Loose Cannon on very short notice. At today's "Real Ale & BBQ Fest", they're going to have a couple of versions of Loose Cannon in casks. According to the brewer, they're going to have "two different versions brewed in medium toast, white oak barrels..each barrel is from a different source" It was brewed specially for the event, and I can't wait to try it!!
  4. The Pipeline Porter is good. I've had it in bottles. I was very surprised to find it on tap in Vermont!. They were pouring at the bar at the base lodge of Mt Snow, (in VT). People must like it, because the bar only has 6 taps. I don't drink porters too often but, after a day on the slopes, it really hit the spot. It's a great beer to sit and watch skiers wipe out;) It's real good in a bottle and it's excellent on draft. I tapped a keg of this, last night: 4 1/2 hrs until we hit the "Real Ale & BBQ fest" at the brewery. 10+ casks of ale and BBQ!
  5. I've never had the "double dry hopped double **** 2006", but as a hop-head, I imagine that it's fantastic. You're "regular" drinking beer goes for $19.99 and $10.49 a six-pack, around here. That free beer is a kick-ass bennie! You should definitely invest in a kegerator.
  6. I don't think anything called beer can't taste anything but horrible with an ABV that high. The alcohol would probably overwhelm everything. How cool is it working for Stone? Do they hook employees up with discounts? A buddy of mine works for a local Baltimore brewer, (Heavy Seas...formerly Clipper City), and they give employees either 4 cases or a keg of beer each month. Arrogant **** is good stuff. I even broke down and dropped $19.00 for 6-pack of the Oaked version,(which was excellent but, at that price, won't be doing that too often!). I wish Stone beers were more reasonable here. There must not be a big market for it around here, as it's cheaper in grocery stores in Cali, than it is at liquor stores in MD. So...when do we get the hookup for some cool Stone swag??
  7. I have some vintage dated Barley Wine Style Ales that I've been hoarding, and drinking from time to time. Heavy Seas Below Decks. I've got a few bottles from '06, '07 & '08. I missed out on this past winters release. Anyway, we have a tulip-shaped glass that I drink those out of.
  8. The liquor stores that I go to would take 'em back. They'll just give them back to the distributors who, in turn, should tell the brewery. If bad beer is getting out, or if beer is not being handled properly, the brewery definitely wants to know. I got a couple of funky bottles of "9", brewed by Magic Hat, in a sampler pack. There was syrupy, splotchy stuff under the crown and neck of the bottles. I tried one, and it was indeed, funky. The rest of the beers were fine. Since they were part of a sampler, (and I was lazy), I did not exchange the 12-pack. I did e-mail the brewery and told them where, and when, I bought it. I described the issues, and I saved a bottle, and offered to mail it to them. I got an immediate response. They were apologetic, and very grateful. They also sent me some cool SWAG. Good call. If the retailer refused to take them back, then I would find somewhere else to buy my beer. Don't forget, that the Heavy Seas Real Ale & BBQ fest is in 2 weeks. The event is almost sold out. Me and a few buddies will be there. If any of my fellow beer geeks are going, please shoot me a PM. I know it's short notice, but those of you who can make it should have a great time. Basically, the party is held inside of the brewery, which is an old warehouse. In addition to their regular beers, they'll have casks of ale and plenty of BBQ, ribs, pulled pork, brisket, fixin's, etc. Of course, it's all you care to eat and drink and there will be live music. The tickets with the "amusement tax" come $53.90 each. I believe that they offer DD tickets for $39.90 inclusive of the fee. Here's the link to the tickets. http://www.mooreastore.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=179 Here's a link to the brewery event page and, I believe, that you can purchase tickets on this site too. http://www.hsbeer.com/heavy-seas-real-ale-bbq-fest-0 I hope to see some of you there!
  9. I just bought my ticket for the Real Ale & BBQ fest, which is on 3-27 from 12-4. I know it's short notice, but those of you who can make it should have a great time. While they do have lighter offerings, the "Heavy Seas" line of beers are all in the 7% - 10% ABV range. If any of you are going, please shoot me a PM. Hope to see some of you there!
  10. I posted a thread about touring a local brewery. http://www.extremeskins.com/showthread.php?p=7359192#post7359192 If we can drum up enough interest, I'll look into getting a private tour.
  11. I was in VT a couple of weeks ago, and they had the Long Hammer IPA on draft at the hotel bar and the bar at the ski resort, (Mt. Snow), and it is excellent on tap.
  12. Please post and let us know what you think of the Bigfoot. I've never had it. I've only ever tried one Barley Wine style ale. Clipper City Heavy Seas Below Decks. I'm a hop-head and this stuff has strong malt flavors. Honestly, I can only drink them once in a while. It has an ABV of 10% and is definitely a winter beer. It's a seasonal beer with a very limited release. It ages very well. It's actually amazing how the flavors evolve over time. I have a couple of bottles of 2006, a couple of bottles from 2008 and a couple of 4-packs from 2007.
  13. We spent a week in St. Lucia and they served Piton all over the place in both draft and bottles. It was pretty good, but I chalk that up to temps being in 90's while we were there, so it was very refreshing. Yes...it's pretty good. That being said, (and I'm a big fan of Clipper City beers), I prefer Sierra Nevada Pale Ale over the Clipper City. I have a couple of vacations coming up, but I'll start a thread for a Brewery tour in March/April
  14. Damn straight. For the price of 2 of those cab rides, I can by an entire keg of craft-brewed beer.....
  15. Yeah Man! I've been to a couple oyster feasts and the "Bacon & Beer" feast. They do a great job.
  16. I believe it. Max's has a great selection, and we live about 15-20 minutes away, but we seldom go there. Parking and the whole downtown scene is kind of a hassle. What's sad is that grocery stores in CA have a better selection of craft brews than many local liquor stores. For my fellow beer lovers, (and those who live nearby), we ought to organize a "field trip" to the Clipper City Brewery for one of their tours. They're relatively close, (exit 9 off of the Baltimore beltway). They offer two tours every Saturday. The tours are free or $5.00 if you want a pint glass and 6 samples. They're typically entertaining, informative and fun. I'll be tied up over the next few Saturdays, but if any of you guys are up for it, shoot me a PM and I'll get all of the info and throw it together. I think that if we get enough interest, (10+ people maybe?), that we can get a private tour.
  17. We just got back from Lake Tahoe, CA and I had the chance to try several different beers. A couple of them really stuck out. Sierra Nevada Harvest Wet Hop Ale (2009 13th release) It was sold in 22oz, (24oz?), bottles and was excellent. Fresh, hoppy & delicious. The hops seem similiar to the ones used in the Torpedo Ale. I picked it up for around $4.00 at a grocery store. Lake Tahoe Brewery IPA I had it on draft at the brewery. Another excellent, hoppy brew. I also found Lagunitas IPA on tap. Unbelievably refreshing and bitter. An excelletn IPA that you can probably find around here, but not on draft.
  18. No surprise here. As long as the beer lines are kept clean, and it's dispensed from a balanced system, Brewery fresh beer always tastes better. I had a sixer of the Burning River, during the Canton road trip a couple of years ago. I thought it was pretty good. I've never tried the Yakima Delight, but I will tell you that the last 2 kegs that I tapped has been the Victory Hop Devil. Damn straight! We're headed to Lake Tahoe. Snowboarding aside, a big part of the fun is trying all of the different West Coast beers. The grocery store in town, (Raley's), has a great selection. Hell, even the casinos all have Sierra Nevada on draft. We always hit the Lake Tahoe Brewery too. I'm going to try to find some of those beers that you posted and give 'em a try. We're headed there next week and can't wait!!
  19. Locally, try Clipper City's Peg Leg Stout. It's brewed near Baltimore and it's very good.
  20. I'm drinking a Pipeline Porter right now. It's brewed by Kona Brewing Co. It's a limited release porter that contains "100% Hawaiian Kona coffee". It's pretty thin, as far as porters go, (and don't do porters to often), but it's drinkable If I was in the mood for a real porter, I'd opt for a Samuel Smiths Taddy, or an Anchor. The Kona is a tad too carbonated, but the coffee flavors work. I won't have any problems finishing this sixer, but I doubt that I'd buy it again. During the games, I'll switch between Loose Cannon and Snake Dog.
  21. I love the Torpedo. The problem, here in MD, is that the minimum order for distributorships is 1000cases and they don't often buy very often. At least that's what the guy at the liquor store told me. If you ever see it, buy it! In a couple of weeks, we're headed back to Lake Tahoe, CA. They have a huge variety of craft-brewed beer. In fact, the "house" beer on draft at many watering holes is Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. I can't wait!!!
