Good ol' Norvo the Clown cut Wychek, Rich Gannon, and Keenan McCardell to make room for Heath Shuler and Alvin Harper. Pure genius...

I was at the training camp in '91 and even with the Posse, it was clear that McCardell was very talented and already looked like he belonged on an NFL field. So much so that I always remembered who he was and didn't understand why we let him escape when it was obvious the Posse were on their way out in the next 2 or so years.

  2. To me this is less about Howell than about not having the chance to take Marvin Harrison, Jr. If the Bears keep Fields, then that opens up Harrison for them.  But I'd really prefer to spend that not even on offensive line talent but on a potential HoF wide receiver who has all the attributes you're looking for and his a big target for Howell.  I think even my critique of Harrison being a little soft is more to do with protecting himself until he gets to the pros.

It's one thing if you have a Caleb Williams ready to go (though I have my doubts on him) but I'm more skeptical on the rest.

For everyone hot to trot on QB, just grab yourself MH and then draft JJ McCarthy next year.

Joe Barry is the worst DC in rhe history of the NFL and it’s not that close.

How the hell we went from Haz to Barry to Manusky to Del Rio is wild.

At least Del Rio had 2 years where the defense ended well.  None of the rest of them can say that.

Low bar but Del Rio is the best of the worst.

Glad he’s gone though I’m not sure I care that much about the timing

They're not kidding when they call it a coaching fraternity. The same loyalty and need to look out for guys who've paid their dues, yes you have emerging stars but they always make sure their guy has a job. Joe Barry is definitely the worst of contemporary times for the entire league. It makes you wonder how he got hired but then I recall he married Rod Marinelli's daughter.

wait....Joe Barry was hired by Matt LeFleur in Green Bay and they have actually performed...OK not disastrously.

    Life's a trip, que no?

Exactly. At this point it's just impatient and punitive. We've had almost a quarter of a century of that. It's time to find something different.

The punitive part is definitely true but I really can't stand this narrative. Dan stopped being impatient at just the wrong time in his tenure. I saw a post recently that had Mike McDaniel, LeFleur, McVay and Shanahan all on the Redskins staff.  The worst part is, we sort of knew what we had with Shanahan and McVay (the worst was McVay.) How long did Gruden get? He sucked and it was obvious pretty early.

I don't agree with firing Rivera right now anymore, because what will you really replace him with---but this thing that Dan went through coaches just wasn't true. I wish it were because we could have just fired Gruden and hired McVay but I know that he likely would not have had same success here.

We were awful in the last days of Gruden/Allen. Rivera at least helped us get to mediocrity. He's kinda like what Jeff Fisher was to the Rams after their disastrous Steve Spagnolo years.

Now we gotta find our Sean Mcvay.

Find? We had him... he was being called a great coaching prospect then and despite of my urging to fire Gruden and hire him instead... we didn't.

We had Shanahan too. For all the talk about Snyder it was his lack of quick decision making on coaching that killed the team.

This one really agreed poorly. Internet culture ascended and paloffs was an example of a meme *just localized to this board or online Skins fans*

This thread should never die,  just a shame we lost the original.

  7. One of the reasons you see brought up a lot is that Bill either poorly drafted at wideout or simply did not know how to deal with a real #1 WR in the offense. Yes, you want smart, team-focused guys on your roster, but the Patriots were nigh unstoppable with Randy Moss. The goal should have been surrounding Brady with weapons, even trading draft picks to do so (for the right fit.) Brady would probably have 10 rings if the Patriots just focused a bit more under Bill in getting top flight offensive talent. I mean, the Pats lost a close one vs. the Colts when they had Reche Caldwell and Jabar Gaffney at wideout.

Belichick doesn't seem to have an eye for most positions. Brady carried that's team to it's last bunch of SBs. Imagine Brady if he'd had Marvin Harrison and Reggie Wayne most of his career like Manning had. Brady had mostly scrubs and Gronk the last 10 years. Moss for a couple years.

And they went almost undefeated when they had Moss. And lost a close one with Reche Caldwell as their main outside receiver. Looking at their drafts Bill could never figure out WR.

^Thats where guys like Tyreek Hill come into play. Hit them on a crossing route and you never know when they will take it to the house.

Isn't that exactly what they used to say about the West Coast Offense.  That you get more consistent chance at 5+ yards and even guys like John Taylor or Jerry Rice going all the way (or quite a distance) on a slant or cross.

Was that your little pet nickname for him?

No, that was someone else, I just get a chuckle from it.

EDIT: Yeah that was ggarriso who came up with it and he used it before Chase's injury in 2021 (as early as October.) I also used it in relationship to his actual play on the field in 2021 (though posted immediately after his injury and long after, of course.)

I was just thinking of Michael Strahan who didn’t become a force until his 5th season. His first 3 years he was active for 39 games and had a total of 13 sacks and 2 int. I don’t know how many for a loss. His 4th he had 5 more sacks. It wasn’t until his 5th that the broke out and had double digit sacks.

not saying Young is Strahan, but through 3 seasons he has 9 sacks over 28 games. There is more to the story than just sacks, but it’s hard to compare when it seems that back when Strahan was first playing they didn’t keep as good of records for DEs.

When you mentioned Strahan, I had this distinct feeling he came in during transition from 3-4 to 4-3. I just have this thing in my head that he was originally a 3-4 end.

Turns out I was right (shocking, I know). In 1993, he had injuries but he was also stuck in a defense that was in its final year of using the 3-4. He was on a different side of the line starting out and then 3 years in switched to LDE.

Strahan, although a second round pick, was not from a huge program (Texas Southern), either.

Of all the things to talk about today and y'all keep harping on Young. It's bizarre to me.

Best case- He comes back, balls out like a monster and we trade him for a high pick

Worst case- He doesn't play and becomes a 3-5th rd comp pick.

Does it really take that long for me to make a post in response to someone else?

Does that inconsequential amount of time (consider observation and argument a form of entertainment) really equate to "harping" on anything?  That people on a sports message board would talk about things related to this or that team should almost never be considered bizarre.  It's one of the least high-stakes topics and many of us have thousands of posts over decades. That is what is bizarre.

Otherwise he was one of the best college edge prospects I've ever seen, and he was a Probowler as a rookie.  We're not second guessing that pick today, and instead we're feeling great about our future if not for that knee injury.

Before his knee injury he looked rather ineffective that 2021 season. He wasn't called Chase Dung because of a knee injury dude.

  14. What's funny is you have people who think they're hip and in the know because they smoke weed, you have codgers thinking any use of marijuana means you "like to get wet" on a consistent basis and somehow we're not going to talk about drinking alcohol.

Many, many guys, probably most in the NFL can and sometimes do drink alcohol. The use of it, the volume, the frequency, the associated habits, the underlying mental illnesses that may be calmed or exacerbated by it, etc. that's what's important. Same with some of the big guys and eating.

Hell, this very franchise had a player, Laron Landry, that abused (put aside substances used to mold the physique) weight training, something that we'd normally laud from a committed player.

So please, stop with the "i'm the cool 44 year old pothead" vs the "if it's not alcohol or tabacky, it's totally wacky" false dichotomies and use your ****ing brains.

Young is gonna have a great year and all the same people hating on him now will be the ones crying the most about how we didn't exercise his option.

You'll never hear me cry about that. I stand by my insights (when I have them) and I don't flip a switch and pretend I didn't say or believe what I said or believed.
