Yes, but as the research team notes

Of course.  Which is why I said, "not the PRIMARY factor..."

The fall is going to look very different in schools.  Teachers will be vaccinated.  HS student will largely be vaccinated (if they want to be/are worried about it); heck, MS students too with the progress suspected by the CDC.  We're learning more about how this spreads (or doesn't) in schools, and in three months, the atmosphere will be totally different.  Granted a rogue Indian strain could make that "totally different" worse than what the trends now would predict, but looking ahead, I think we'll generally be full steam ahead in schools.  Thank God.

CDC changed guidance for student spacing from 6 feet apart to 3. I guess they think that'll be enough. I did see some reference to outdoor classrooms. Dunno. The emails were just a very high overview.

Plus, studies are showing that social distancing indoors is not the primary factor in preventing covid spread.

Yes sir. Intense as hell!  Ann Dowd is so good, per usual.

We really should've waited until the whole season was out before watching,  this one new episode a week a week thing is torture.  I'm a millennial, I want it NOW.

Yeah, we're waiting for the season to run.  We can't do weekly episodes anymore.  Hardest thing is keeping your head in the sand and not hearing/seeing spoilers.

Under the proposed Super League format, they would each play 18-25 games in the Super League, plus the 42 to 52 domestic games they plan annually, which would come to 60 to 77 games total.  It would only be a matter of time before the Big 6 asked for more concessions, like not playing in the EFL/FA cups, guaranteed exemption for promotion/relegation, special scheduling, etc.). And eventually the domestic league becomes secondary, so they're literally fielding a B team for those games.

.... the proposal punishes the most loyal parts of the fanbase, and the fans of the Big 6 already know this.

    Yes, forgot that aspect.  Absolutely.

So was the major issue of the ESL locking in the founding teams? If the financial backers came out and worked with the domestic leagues and said "Top 3 from the 5 major leagues plus remaining 5 thru a qualification tournament" (thinking one tie for 10 teams which includes lower leagues). people would be fine with it?

I'm far from an expert on this and the fan outrage.  If were the annual top 3 (meaning they'd change each year), then it's not that much different than the current CL... only even LESS predictable than the current CL format.

The owners of the breakaway club wanted to create a predictable annual winfall.  The "Big6" owners in England don't like the chances that their team will be one of the two (or more) that miss out on the CL money.  Businessmen want predictable and sustainable profits.  Plus, this would have also given them a bigger slice of the pie.

Why are fans against it?  Because it locks in the winners and locks out the rest of the footballing world.  It's not in the spirit of fair competition to do that.

FIFA and UEFA were only against the idea because it would take away from THEIR cash grabs.  These organizations are a freakin' joke top to bottom.  If they could create another competition to sell to fans and TV to make another billion dollars, they'd do it in a heartbeat without thinking of the health and safety of the players.

Absolutely crazy, though, for the owners not to consider the supporter reaction.  100% nuts.  It's so predictable... the fan reaction (and the owner's ineptitude in not planning for it).  This super league was going NOWHERE without universal fan support from all 15 (or whatever) founding teams.  Fat chance that.

  6. Well, that went smoothly.  Good on the fans, supporter unions, players, and coaches for getting the ESL thrown in the trash where it belongs.

Gonna take a while (if ever) for the owners of those clubs to win back the fans.  Especially, the LFC fans.  FSG took a good thing and straight ****ed it all up for themselves.  If Klopp is smart, he's banging the table for a massive transfer war chest.  FSG almost has to say yes to try to distract the fans with new shiny players and (hopefully) hardware.

Amazing really how they've ****ed this up.  Went from "saving" the club financially, hiring a generational coach, and bringing CL and PL trophies in back to back years to this.  Will be a case study for sports owners for decades.

  7. I've been nicely satisfied with Mr. Mercedes on Pea**** as a "side show."  My wife and I LOVED Ted Lasso (Apple TV, but worth it...  re-upped for seasons 2 and 3, so maybe wait for season 2?  It's good, though, and totally worth the month's fee).   We also got into Yellowstone... watched on Pea**** but it's on network TV I think.    I'm in on The Boys and would recommend that.  We're clipping through Schitt's Creek now... take's a bit to get to know the characters, but good after that (maybe 2-3 episodes).

By the way, thank you to all of you that throw stuff onto this thread... it helps populate my "to watch" lists across all the platforms.  You're doing God's work.

    BC +6.5 (W)

    UK team over 30.5 (L)

    UMiami +15 (L)

    6-3 for the day

  9. this is a stupid exercise, but here's what i think the supreme court should look like:

10 justices:  5 nominated by R leadership, 5 nominated by D leadership (all confirmed by Senate as usual)

9 justices are "sitting" justices with one in reserve.

Which ever party holds the Exec branch, the other party hold a 5-4 majority on the SC... with the "reserve" justice on the bench until a presidential election causes a party change in the White House.

Appointments are still for life (or not... whatever), but the balance of the court pivots with elections to maintain appropriate checks and balances... but that balance is never more than 5-4.

Flaws exist, of course, but man, this would reduce the random nature of the highest court of the land's composition.

Now, I also know alot that were amazing teachers. But still don't think 95k a year for 9 months of work and 8 hours a day is justified.

maybe the fact that the economy apparently needs them to work in order to properly function is a sign that teachers aren't, in fact, overpaid for 10 months of work (mid-August to mid-June.  also, $100k teachers aren't the norm; those would be teachers in wealthy districts at the end of their career and at the top of their pay scale.

    just sayin'

I think they need at least one player to provide more creative spark in the attacking half when the opponent’s defensive scheme, or other factors, are shutting down the front three. But Keita might be it with enough consistency and health. Maybe a healthy Ox? Maybe Minamino?

i don't see it with ox, sadly.  he was on a tear when he got hurt, but he hasn't been the same.  keita has shown maddening flashes, but needs to stay healthy and be consistently great.  minamino did look like he was starting to get more comfortable with what klopp is asking him to do.  i agree, though, one more creative force in the midfield to help break down sides that are bunkering is needed, regardless if it comes from last year's bench stepping up or a signing.

fun to have leeds back in the premier league.  that's your team, right?  or is that someone else?

  12. new season, let's run it back, Redmen!

    Top 4:

    Liverpool

    Man City

    Chelsea

    ManU

would like to see Liverpool still pick up a player or two... Thiago would be great, but it feels like he's slipping away.  can't question FSG's approach with the club's results, but they're being damned frugal.

  13. my daughter's college just shifted from a hybrid opening to fully online.  getting room and board refund, but tuition itself is staying the same.  financial aid is staying the same too, at least.  i seriously want her to take a gap year and do something cool, but she wants to keep moving forward towards graduation.  sucks.

i work at a private school that will (for now) be opening in the fall under a hybrid model.  the school is resourced well enough to be dumping a TON of money into making this happen, including all the fancy upgrades to HVAC in the buildings.  we'll see how it goes... i wouldn't be surprised if we start up and then have to pivot to fully online as COVID starts ripping through the community.

  14. if you like the burn, look for the higher alcohol content.  bottled in bond varieties typically kick it up over 100 proof.  just finished a bottle of wild turkey rare breed that was solid.
