Taylor's Trial Set for Jan. 17

By Jason La Canfora

Washington Post Staff Writer

Thursday, October 20, 2005; 2:54 PM

Redskins safety Sean Taylor is scheduled to go on trial on felony assault charges on Jan. 17 following a continuance hearing in Miami today, according to representatives for the state attorney's office. The date was set after his case was postponed for a second time.

The new date is after the conclusion of the regular season and would come the Tuesday following the second round of the NFL playoffs, preceding the championship games.

Taylor's lawyer, Edward Carhart, and the state attorney's office in Miami had planned to file jointly for the continuance today. Carhart was not immediately available for comment and Taylor's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, declined to discuss the matter.

Taylor, 22, was arrested in the spring for pulling a gun on individuals he believed had stolen two all-terrain vehicles from him. He was charged with felony assault with a deadly weapon.

The football player did not attend Washington's off-season workout program at Redskins Park in Ashburn and remained in South Florida, where the altercation took place. His trial was originally set for Sept. 12, but during a pre-trial hearing, the judge continued the case until Oct. 24.

Taylor also rejected a plea offer at that time, with Carhart indicating his client was unlikely to accept such an offer in the future. They had sought to have the case moved until after the season and the prosecution expressed a willingness to postpone the trial as well.

The fifth overall pick in the 2004 draft out of the University of Miami, Taylor could face a three-year mandatory minimum sentence if convicted of the gun charge.

 He was arrested for allegedly pulling a gun..... Burden of proof, innocent until proven guilty and all that.
