codeorama
Are you talking about multitrack software for recording music/instruments? Or just recording stuff like your voice?
ChocolateCitySkin
I bought a program called focus audio recorder pro. It allows me to record Mp3s in real 'time. It's great for when I can't keep up in a lecture.
TC4
If you can spend up to $300, get Sony Sound Forge It can not only handle your recording, but also has all the editing tools you can find in a studio http://www.sonymediasoftware.com/Products/ShowProduct.asp?PID=
RLeVan
What kind of recording are you going to do? (vocals, intruments) For a DAW (Digitial Audio Workstation), on a budget I would go with Cakewalks SONAR. That should last you a good while. As far as mikes go, a Shure SM-58 is great for vocals, whereas a Shure Sm-57 is better for percussion. The Rode NTK is a really good condensor mike that isn't very expensive. ncsuapex
If you're connecting the microphone into the mic or the line port you can use this program to record from either mic or line in. There is a free version or you can buy it for 29.99, never understood why people want to pay 300 bucks for software.... http://www.supermp3recorder.com/
