9. Washington: CB Carlos Rogers, Auburn

The third Tiger to be drafted in the top 10, Rogers fills the Redskins' primary need after losing Fred Smoot in free agency. A run on cornerbacks was expected, with it being the highest-paid position in football. Rogers allows the Redskins to send Walt Harris back to the bench, where he is best-suited as a nickel back. The selection of Rogers should re-establish the Redskins as having arguably the most talented defense in football.

25. Washington (from Denver): QB Jason Campbell, Auburn

Joe Gibbs' former Super Bowl MVP and Tampa Bay personnel executive Doug Williams has gone on the record as saying Campbell is the best quarterback in this draft, which may have hurt the Buccaneers' chances of landing him in the second round. Campbell made tremendous strides as a senior, showing much more poise behind center and leading the Tigers to an undefeated 12-0 season. Gibbs showed his lack of confidence in Patrick Ramsey a year ago when one of the first moves he made was to sign Mark Brunell, who proved to be past his prime and forced Ramsey back into the driver's seat. With the injury rate of quarterbacks, every team needs at least two solid signalcallers. Campbell will get a year to develop learning from Brunell and Ramsey and likely will be thrust into the starting lineup in his second year. Ideally, Ramsey will have a great season like Drew Brees did a year ago, improve his value and create trade value for the Redskins before hitting the free-agent market. Don't be mistaken — this is still Patrick Ramsey's team and he could make big strides in his fourth year — but the future belongs to Campbell. When Gibbs expects to make another run for the Super Bowl, it is Campbell who will be under center.
