OT-Living in Baltimore

Romo

Recommended Posts

Hey,

I have a favour to ask anyone who lives in the Baltimore area. One of my really good friends just got a job in Baltimore but he has no idea about the area and where are good places to live and places to avoid. He said his office is downtown near Camden Yards. Any info you could give would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

If he likes to live in the city, try the federal hill area.

If he wants in the beltway but just out of the city, there are some good spots in the Towson area north of town.

If its the suburbs, Owings Mills New Town is a good place to live (NW of Baltimore). Ten thousand homes have gone up here in the last 10 years and they are still building. There is only one Metro line in Baltimore. The line begins at Owings Mills and has a stop pretty close to Camden Yards. A large percentage of the people that work downtown live here because of the convienence of the Metro.

Columbia is a little more expensive, but it is a great location and has all the aminities (between Baltimore and DC). If money weren't an issue, I'd probably suggest Columbia first.

Now, if your friend sports a red neck, he could look into Carroll county. Westminster boasts a touch of inbreeding, but it is growing fast so there must be a reason why. Lots of trees and farms and stuff. Some people drive from Carroll Co. into Owings Mills and then take the Metro in.

I'd avoid Randalstown, Pikesville, and most areas south of town. These areas are run down and they are still running.

Hey there,

I'm not originally from Baltimore but I've been living here for close to four years now and I know my way around. Baltimore gets a very bad rep and I have to say most of it undeservedly so.

There are plenty of nice and yes SAFE places to live in and around Baltimore. What it comes down to is how deep your friends pockets are and exactly what kind of place he is looking for.

If he's among the townhouse crowd and doesn't mind living in a place that can be somewhat noise at times (bars etc.) I suggest he take a look at Fell's point. The Thame Street/Ann Street area has lots of nicely renovated brick town homes and it's a lot of fun to live out there. Plenty of bars restaurants etc.

Another really nice part that's more appealing to people that like the red brick townhouse style is Canton. Lot's of new developments there and really nice townhomes that are affordable. Plus there is access to yacht club, plenty of nice restaurants and bars and generally a very energetic and enjoyable area.

Traffic is always a concern for both Canton and Fells Point, but once you know your way around and have figured out when NOT to take certain street it's not that big of a deal.

If your friend wouldn't mind living in an apartment and likes the high ceiling, hardwood floor type condos he should take a look at Federal Hill and Mount Vernon. Both are culturally very appealing with museums and Baltimore Symphony really close. With John Hopkins right around the corner there are also a lot of young people and plenty of nice restaurants and bars.

I have to say that I'm not as familiar with burbs so I can't categorically tell you which places to look at and which to avoid, but I've heard nice things about Owings Mills.

What I suggest is that your friend get a magazine like maybe the Baltimorian and also check out www.sunspot.net. The Baltimore Suns website has plenty of useful information regarding real estate, life style etc.

Whatever your friend decides, have him keep one thing in mind. Stay the heck away from the North East. This is not one of those places you want to be stuck in once the sun goes down....

If your friend has any more questions he can always send me an email:

Laurent

can you describe your friend, Romo sits to pee? What he likes to do on his off time, what he's looking for and what he can afford. Big thing...single, married, children?

BTW, Laurent. I agree with you. This is really a good place to live. I like the people, weather, proximity to some great stuff. I'm in New Town. I take it you are a city guy?

I'm definitely a city guy, but shockingly enough I live in Catonsville.. I'm still living in my college pad and my rent agreement is running out this summer so I'm currenly actively looking for a place downtown. Likely in the Federal Hill/Mount Vernon area.

I usually hang out at the Brewers Art on the 1400 block of North Charles Street or go down to Canton. I'm a big "african american/black/(insert pc terminology here)" guy, 6'5" 250lbs so if you ever see me chugging down a beer just say hi

Cheers,

Laurent

:D

I'm a big white/anglo saxon/(insert whatever here) 6' 250 lb guy. If you see me in tow behind my wife sloshing from one dumb mall to the other, turn your head and walk away...save us both the embarrassment.

Catonsville. Shudder. If I were single and just out of college, Federal Hill would be my first choice. Or some cabin with a barn out in the woods with "no tresspassing" signs on every tree. Just me and my art.

But I'm married. Burbs it is.

Hey guys,

Thanks alot. I emailed him all that info.

My friends he's 25, from Niagara Falls originally. Recently graduated and going to be working as an actuary. (yikes)

He's single and probably looking for either a one bedroom place or sharing a house/apartment. He likes casinos and strip bars (2 things Niagara Falls is famous for). Normally hangs out at bars and pubs versus dance clubs. I think his preference would be to live within walking distance to work or near public transit. I think he mentioned parking near his work was $300/mth.

He's really excited about Baltimore because of all the sports teams. I will have to convert him to a Skins fan, he half-heartedly roots for the Bills. Best part of the whole deal is that now if i can make it down to see a Skins game i have a place to crash!

:)

Just got an email back from my friend.

He said he'd be willing to pay $800-950/mth depending on what his exact job offer is, i guess they are finalizing the details.

Thanks again Mardi and Laurent
