Williams to Be Honored Saturday By Gary Fitzgerald Redskins.com http://www.redskins.com/news/newsDetail.jsp?id=1532 Redskins great and Super Bowl XXII MVP Doug Williams will be honored as this year's "Joseph J. Tomlin Award" recipient this Saturday, May 29, in Orlando, Fla. during the Pop Warner Scholar All-American Banquet in Orlando, Fla. The award is presented to an individual who has demonstrated outstanding character development, physical fitness and scholastic achievement. As Redskins fans know, Williams had a successful NFL career from 1978-89, playing in Washington from 1986-89. The highlight of his career came in the Redskins' amazing 42-10 victory over Denver in Super Bowl XXII, when he completed 18-of-29 passes for 340 yards and four touchdowns. He was the first African-American quarterback to start and win a Super Bowl. After his playing days, Williams returned to his alma mater, Grambling State University, and served as head coach for six seasons while leading the Tigers to three consecutive conference championships. In January, Williams left Grambling State and took a job as a personnel executive with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the team that drafted him in 1978. The Pop Warner Scholar All-Americans ceremony will honor 4,300 young football players and cheerleaders who achieved high academic merit. In addition, various community and business figures are honored at the banquet for their achievements and service to education and youth sports. Along with Williams, former Congressman and NFL quarterback Jack Kemp, Oakland Raiders wide receiver Tim Brown and University of Maryland cheerleading coach Lura Fleece will also be honored. The inaugural "Pop Warner NFL Teams of the Year" will be presented to the Jacksonville Jaguars and Carolina Panthers.
