bubba9497
Redskins pressuring Bills on assistants http://www.democratandchronicle.com/sports/bills/0114S82UL7Q_sports.shtml (January 14, 2004) — The Washington Redskins are putting the heat on the Buffalo Bills to make a decision regarding their assistant coaches so new coach Joe Gibbs can proceed with filling out his staff. The NFL Coaches Association has sent letters to the Bills and the NFL asking the club to essentially release the assistants from their contracts or guarantee that they will be retained by the new head coach Buffalo hires. NFL spokesman Gregg Aiello said the league has received the letter, but said, “This is not a league issue, it’s a club issue. Those coaches are under contract to the Bills.” Ex-Bills coach Gregg Williams, now the defensive coordinator in Washington, would like to hire most of his old assistants, but Buffalo president and general manager Tom Donahoe wants his new coach to have the opportunity to pick who stays. The Bills did allow the Redskins to negotiate with special teams coach Danny Smith and safeties/third-down coach Steve Jackson. Gibbs is expected to announce that he has hired both by the end of the week. Bills assistant head coach Dick LeBeau interviewed in Pittsburgh on Tuesday for the Steelers’ defensive coordinator’s opening.
