KirkNC
The FO and coaches seem very dedicated to going with the less expensive UDA, or players that have only a few years in under the CBA if the players they are choosing have relatively equal value. What a refreshing change for this franchise! We will be developing talent from within given this path (not to say everyone of these guys will turn into all-pro's) We are also make very shrewd salary cap moves with these decisions. Molden $655,000 - Jimoah $225,000 a net savings of $430,000. Tre $530,000 - Bedell $305,000 saved $225,000 Rod Jones $ ? too much - Pita Elisara $225,000 saved $ a bunch And we may see a couple more of these. Friedman costs less than Brown as an example. In the end these are the types of desision that will allow us to retain our core players and make strategic FA aquisitions like we did this past year. Great to see! thinker
We saved less money under the cap than that - we had to eat Molden's $200 k bonus and Rod Jones' bonus slated for this year as well. Also for veterans what they count under the cap is less than their salary (this is a concession given to vets so they all won't get cut for rookies) - so a 5 year vet may sign for $750k but may count only $450 under the cap. Also the cap is calculated as the top certain number of slots on the roster added up (I can't remember the number - but it's not the full 53 man roster). Let's say the cap counts only the top 45 guys and number 27 is cut, then player #28 moves up and so on. The actual savings then depends on the difference between the cap number for #27 and #28 AND the difference between #45 and the new #45 who now counts under the cap.
