Cowboys Now Need LB Coach
By Nick Eatman
DallasCowboys.com Columnist
February 8, 2002 5:42PM (CST)

IRVING, Texas - The Cowboys now can add linebackers coach to the list of needs to fill for the 2002 season.

George Edwards, who has coached the Cowboys' linebackers since the 1998 season, will not return, Cowboys Vice President Stephen Jones confirmed Friday. Jones did not get into specifics about Edwards' departure.

Edwards' contract had expired Feb. 1, and it appeared the Cowboys had convinced him to stay with the club last month when he was offered the defensive coordinator position at Georgia Tech and was courted by the University of Florida for the same position.

But as of Friday, Edwards' office at Valley Ranch had been cleaned out, and the Cowboys did not give a reason why his contract was not renewed for the coming season.

In mid-January, Georgia Tech head coach Chan Gailey, the Cowboys former head coach (1998-99) who had brought Edwards to Dallas from the University of Georgia, wanted to reunite with the 35-year-old coach. But after an interview in Atlanta, Edwards turned down the opportunity to be Tech's defensive coordinator, just as he did the year before when Georgia courted him to be its defensive coordinator.

While Georgia Tech has since filled its coaching staff, the University of Florida, which had expressed interest in Edwards in early January, has yet to hire a defensive coordinator.

However, NFL sources said Edwards has had contact with the Washington Redskins and new head coach Steve Spurrier. Edwards was a graduate assistant under Spurrier from 1991-92 at Florida.

Spurrier has already assembled most of his staff, but still is looking for a linebackers coach and defensive coordinator, which would be a big jump for Edwards, although his units have been productive since joining the Cowboys.

In Edwards' four seasons in Dallas, Dexter Coakley became the first Cowboys linebacker to go to the Pro Bowl since 1993 (Ken Norton) when he was selected as a reserve in 1999. Coakley, who has registered more than 127 tackles in each of his five seasons, earned another Pro Bowl trip this year.

Right and good eye. Lewis is very careful to let Steve pick what he feels, he'll need (laundry list of prospects) and Steve's doing just that.
When the folks started talking to each other, the moment Lewis was free to do so, it went into great detail, when the Post relesed it's news we had talks with Marvin Lewis, it was delayed.

That allowed a lot of contacting to take place.
Incidently, it was the boys defensive LB's that were active, with Dexter Coakley an avid student of Edwards's methods that gave us trouble. Shawn Barber under Edwards would have a heightened active role and Arrington would have his best showcased. Mitchell, Jones and Pierce would be more effective also.

If he's signed, then Lewis and Spurrier will be months ahead for the defense and allow Spurrier to concentrate on what the Offensive needs are.
That would mean the Special Teams could get special attention also.

[ February 09, 2002, 05:00 AM: Message edited by: indyskinsfan ]

Hauss the news hound, I love your posts. Good story. I for one, don't want anymore ex-cowboy players or coachs on our team. But since Edwards was with SS at Florida I won't mind Edwards coming here to coach. SS knows the guy before he was with the cowpukes so maybe he would be loyal to SS.
