Gregg Williams vs. New Front Office

If Gregg Williams were to be promoted to head coach of the Washington Redskins by any one other than a competent general manager or a rehauled front office department, then I will chalk it up as another mistake on the part of the Redskins organization.

Forget the need for consistency in the coaching ranks, for the greater need is inconsistency in the ranks of the front office --- at the top group, where everything else trickles down. The front office, headed mainly by Snyder and Cerrato, as of yet, has failed to do a good job consistently. In fact, it has done a piss poor job since its very conception, dating back from the days of Norv Turner to the present times with Joe Gibbs, with the jury on the verge of handing a not-too friendly verdict on the latter. This is not pessimism targeting Joe Gibbs directly, but criticism aimed at the front office for failing, yet again, to bring a head coach that can field a winning team.

And now there are fans from within the Redskins community that want this less-than-stellar Redskins front office to arbitrarily elect to elevate Gregg Williams to the position of head coach. It’s not so much a matter of whether such a decision would be bad or good, but a serious concern over who should be making that decision to begin with, and any decision, regardless of how sensible or appeasing it might look at face value, that this current administration executes won’t be met with strong expectations, at least not on my part.

It is the responsibility of a General Manager, or that of a more competent front office, to handpick a new head coach. However, by advocating the automatic ascension of Gregg Williams, we are also advocating the existing influence of the current front office regime (who is more likely and would be in position to promote Williams) while, in a classic cart-before-the-horse scenario, placing the need of a General Manager, or better personnel people, as secondary since any new front office official might not want Gregg Williams to be our new head coach!

In short, those that want Gregg Williams to be head coach should ask themselves, first and foremost, who should be making that call. Those that want a General Manager, or a more competent personnel department, need to ask themselves if they’re willing to lose Gregg Williams, as those upstairs would be rightfully responsible for deciding his outcome here.

If we get a new front office guy and he wants Gregg Williams to be the next head coach, which I highly doubt, then both parties will be pleased.
