JMS
New Iranian Negotiator To Hold First Nuclear Talks. AFP (10/23, Pouladi) reports, "Iran's new nuclear negotiator will meet EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana in Rome on Tuesday for his first talks on the atomic crisis with the West amid little expectation of any breakthrough. Saeed Jalili has taken over from Ali Larijani," but "Larijani is still holding on to his seat on the Supreme National Security Council as the representative of supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. It is in this capacity he will attend the talks. Adding to the intrigue, the top foreign policy advisor [Ali Akbar Velayati] of supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who has the final say on all foreign policy matters, said it would have been better if Larijani had stayed in his post." JMS
Maybe I'm reading this wrong but I see Iran as rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic at this point. Unclear. The original Iranian arms negotiator was seen as a pragmatist, a hard liner but willing to compromise. His replacement was seen as a negative for a negotiated settlement; but now it seems he will continue to be present at the negotiations even though he was replaced? More than anything it's reflective over Iran's internal politics and power struggle between hard liners.
