The Draft Value Chart is worth less this year

The draft value chart makes an assumption: that the 6th pick is worth more than the 7th etc because you can get a slightly better player. But what happens when the 9th pick has the same talent level as the 24th pick? Considering the sal cap, then 9 isn't worth the premium that the chart places on it.

This draft is being labeled as a 6 or 7 player draft. After those top players , people are saying that the next 15-20 picks are essentially the same talent wise. So it is in the redskin's interest to draft a player at 6 that is worthy of a 6th selection than to draft a player at 9 that is just as good as the guy going 20th and picking up a third as compensation.

Keep 6 and get a premium talent player. If you want to drop to 9 and get a middle or end of the first round type player, you had better come knocking on our door with a second round pick.

The picks is worth is determined by the players available, the thoughts of what you or the teams after you want to do, the desires of the teams to get a player at your spot, and the number of teams bidding on your pick.

The draft value chart is a guide to help the teams reach a mutual understanding of the REALATIVE value of each slot in the draft. It is acceptable for us as fans too look at the draft posibilities and to discuss compensation based on the chart, saying it doesn't matter at all is simply wrong.

For instance Minn is reported to want LL or one of the QB's is they fall. If we have both of those players available then anyone who wants to guarantee they get LL or the QB that is left will have to acquire our pick, that makes the price go way up. For instance

-We pick Anderson

-Minn will probably pick the QB

-Atl will take LL

So any team that wants either Quinn or LL will have to trade with us as Minn and ATL will probably have to be blown away to trade out. That is why I think you hear so much of us wanting LL and about us trading up, if we were to start rumors of us wanting Quinn then that may hurt the relationship with JC. So the only way to drive our price up for the possible QB trade would be if we can say we are discussing a trade for the recently drafted CJ. We also can say that we are in discussions for swap of firsts and a player. So to ensure the teams get the players they want they will have to compete with everyone else, which is where for once that damn chart will work for us for once.

This has been a very good few weeks of draft prep by the skins, they have put out or the media has speculated every possible scenario of what we want to do.

the draft value chart is a piece of crap. We are probably the only team who sticks by it, like how trading picks up for Campbell is worth it. I don't care what anyone says, a first rounder next year is still a first rounder, not a "2nd rounder this year". (I am happy with Campbell, the picks in question have passed). Same with the Rocky trade.

A pick is worth more than a higher pick, unless there is someone you absolutely wanted. The draft may be top heavy, but for who we should want (D-line), there are lots of prospects for us (Anderson, Carriker, Branch, Okoye).

Ummmm, it has been well documented that almost all the teams use the same one. But the common misconception is that it is the Bible when it comes to trades which it is not. It is a guide and a tool, nothing more. It's the starting point for trade negotiations. And the other thing is just because you consider the #9 player to be relatively the same as the #6 doesn't mean that NFL teams do. Each team has a different value assigned to each player based on a bunch of different things. Someone is going to take a player much higher in the first round than any of the media services had him projected. It happens every single year and there is no way to know whether they took him too high because we have no idea what any other team had him graded.

The only thing that is certain is that all 32 front offices will issue the statement "We got the guy we wanted."

Since its genesis comes from within the Cowboys' organization (Johnson), I'd be inclined to agree with this statement. I have difficulty looking up at the night sky sometimes because I'm sure some over-the-top Cowboy fans think the stars were put there only for them. :D

I agree with your all your points, but especially appreciate the last one. Similar to after a sports surgeon operates on some player, you'll always here "The operation was a success", even if the guy's arm is falling off.

To use another analogy, when you go try to buy a car, you can either pay the sticker price, walk away or try to negotiate a deal. Trading of picks is no different than that.

And in comparing the two types of deals (trading picks or buying a car), is there anyone else in the entire Redskins organization more qualified to be a car salesman than Vinny Cerrato?
