They should enjoy it now. Chances are, next year will be a different story. Since the current system of free agency (1993) and the salary cap (1994) were implemented, two teams have repeated as Super Bowl champions: the Denver Broncos (1997-98) and New England Patriots (2003-04). The Green Bay Packers followed their 1996 title season with a loss to the Broncos in Super Bowl XXXII. Only one other championship team in that span has advanced as far as the conference title game the next season — the 1994 Dallas Cowboys, who had yet to feel the effects of player movement — while four other teams missed the playoffs altogether a year after earning Super Bowl glory. Super Bowl losers have fared even worse. Since the Buffalo Bills dropped four consecutive Super Bowls from 1990-93, no runner-up has reached the conference title game the next season.
