The Browns, with former New England defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel in his first season as coach, will field 25 new players. Denver (-4 1/2 ) at Miami, 1 p.m. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Despite tying the Broncos record with 27 touchdown passes, QB Jake Plummer also threw 20 interceptions last season. Gus Frerotte, who will start for the Dolphins, hasn't been a full-time starter since 1997 with the Redskins. Houston (+5 1/2 ) at Buffalo, 1 p.m. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Bills tied for third in the league in sacks last season, with 45. Meanwhile, Texans QB David Carr has been sacked 140 times over the past three seasons, which is most in the NFL. New Orleans (+7) at Carolina, 1 p.m. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Panthers DT Kris Jenkins is double-teamed on just about every snap. DE Julius Peppers, who missed about the last two weeks of practice with a sore ankle, is often the main beneficiary. New York Jets (+3) at Kansas City, 1 p.m. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Chiefs may have the league's next Antonio Gates, albeit on defense. Kris Griffin, a linebacker who didn't play football until his senior year in high school and who went to Division II Indiana (Pa.), made the team as an undrafted rookie free agent. He started one preseason game and had an interception in another. Like Gates, Griffin was a basketball player before finding football. Seattle (+3) at Jacksonville, 1 p.m. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jaguars Coach Jack Del Rio has said RB Fred Taylor, who is coming off offseason knee surgery, will get about 20 touches. With rain from Tropical Storm Ophelia in the forecast, Taylor and Seahawks RB Shaun Alexander could get the ball even more. Tampa Bay (+6) at Minnesota, 1 p.m. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Buccaneers will start a rookie running back (Carnell Williams) and three first-year starters on the offensive line. QB Brian Griese could be in for a long day against a Vikings defense that should be vastly improved. Tennessee (+7) at Pittsburgh, 1 p.m., (WUSA-9, WJZ-13) -------------------------------------------------------------------------- RB Willie Parker, who will start for the Steelers, rushed for 102 yards last season against a Bills run defense that ranked seventh. The Titans have a brutal opening slate of games, playing against the Steelers, Ravens, Rams and Colts. Arizona (+3) at New York Giants, 4:15 p.m. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Giants QB Eli Manning has mostly recovered from a preseason elbow injury and should be ready to go. Playing for the Rams in 2003, Kurt Warner, now with Arizona, had a horrific stat line in his last season opener as an opponent at Giants Stadium: sacked six times, six fumbles and a concussion. Dallas (+4 1/2 ) at San Diego, 4:15 p.m., (WTTG-5, WBFF-45) -------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Chargers gave up just 81.7 rushing yards per game last season, ranking third in the league, and San Diego NT Jamal Williams outweighs Dallas center Al Johnson by nearly 50 pounds. Green Bay (+3) at Detroit, 4:15 p.m. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- If Joey Harrington struggles at quarterback for the Lions, and he has done nothing but over his career, they will be forced to use rookie Dan Orlovsky now that Jeff Garcia is out for at least six weeks. Wide receiver Kevin Johnson will be the emergency number three quarterback if Detroit doesn't sign another backup. St. Louis (-6) at San Francisco, 4:15 p.m. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- As of Tuesday, the 49ers still hadn't begun specifically preparing for the Rams, mostly because the team was still reacting to the preseason death of Thomas Herrion, but partly because new coach Mike Nolan is still learning how to manage his time. Indianapolis (-3) at Baltimore, 8:30 p.m. (ESPN, WJZ-13) -------------------------------------------------------------------------- This will be the Colts' sixth straight season opener on the road. They've won four of the previous five. WR Brandon Stokley (dislocated left shoulder) hopes to play. Philadelphia (-1 1/2 ) at Atlanta, 9 p.m. tomorrow (WJLA-7, WMAR-2) -------------------------------------------------------------------------- As far as rematches of their NFC title games have gone, the Eagles beat the Panthers last year after losing to them in the 2003 playoffs; lost to the Bucs in the 2003 regular season after Tampa Bay ended their 2002 season; and in 2002 beat the Rams, who ended Philly's 2001 season in the NFC title game. No_Pressure Posted September 12, 2005 Share Posted September 12, 2005 The places where they were mentioned (SI, Washington Post, etc.) they were predicted to be one of the 4 worst teams in the NFL along with the 49ers, Saints, and Dolphins. All 4 teams won today. It seems to me the only reason the media has to drop the Redskins so far is because of Patrick Ramsey. Whenever the skins are mentioned its always just: they have a good defense, Clinton Portis will be better this year, their line is improved and healthy....but Ramsey is erratic so their going to go 4-12 or 1-15 as 1 paper reported. Completely ridiculous, offence wins games defense wins championships, look at the Ravens of 2000. Jamal Lewis was not nearly as good as a rookie, he fumbled alot, and their starting QB was Tony friggin Banks. They won a damn superbowl with Trent Dilfer. Trent Dilfer for christ's sake.
