So yeah our team is at a serious disadvantage rn. I have some hope it’ll turn around, not sure why.  Lets not let one ugly voice derail a place to talk about what’s gonna be an issue all year.

I’ve found a bunch of the unvaxxed in a stressed state, understandably.  Like more than normal stressed state for these stress-filled days.  My employee is unvaxxed and when I brought up that I’d like him to get it, he got super defensive and stressed. So I lowered the temp and asked what were his reasons why and if he’d be open to reading stuff I would send him. I’ve got to find a way to get through to him, he’s a super employee and good guy.

My thing is if you aren’t gonna get the vaccine, then these players/people need to be maniacal about not getting the virus and do their part. And that is where the ball drops. They want their cake and eat it to. That’s unacceptable.

I think it speaks to the fact that we have a young team, and maybe a not so smart one.

They are smart IMO. They are looking at it from their own opinion and self analysis. Not going along with the herd. There is no definitive research out there that says this vax works. And for people with pre-existing issues, it could be a detriment. There are also people that live holistically or even religiously that don't believe in putting unnatural substances into their bloodstream. The US VP spoke to a church about loving your neighbor in a way to persuade the folks their to get the shot. Unbelievable IMO. But this is where we are now.

This isn't a matchbox issue - this is a life or death issue for some people (Rivera is immunocompromised if you've forgotten)....and it's also a competitive advantage for other teams in the league. We have the worst vaccination rate in the league, this is a huge deal for fielding a team and not having to forfeit games.

So again, I get it with Rivera. But lets be clear.....Rivera went through all of last year and this year with the same players not vaccinated. There was also times where he was not even masked. Next, competitive advantage is extremely menial IMO compared to a person deciding if taking a vax is detrimental to their own health. It is a choice. That is the biggest thing overlooked in the current climate the NFL has placed over these players. You can't say its choice then turn around and take money out of their pockets. We saw pretty much an entire season played last year. We're a year removed and now because the vax is so-called available (and not necessarily a cure), people are up in arms about these players. Again, i go back to the media's coverage of other sporting organizations and lack of energy spent there. Its all business IMO. Always has been. No guaranteed contracts, fines and bull**** CBAs. Until this league changes its culture, the players will always be the scapegoats. Now if a player test positive (whether he was vaxed or not), he'll be front and center and flogged. Hell some people allow themselves to be shot without even knowing wtf is in the vax. They just trust hook line and sinker what they are told. The vax is currently in the testing phase and everyone that has it are the test subjects.

Do your thing and live your life.....those that disagree with what a certain person believes actually turn out to be irrelevant in the long run. Enjoy the WFT and ignore personal opinions on a matchbox issue. Peace.

    Great take.

  5. This again is what this subject brings. The response to opinion/choice is going to be full of of venom and full **** all the time. It proves what is possible to happen with future media coverage regarding this polarizing subject. As time goes along, it is going to be another us/them fight between those that have the vax and those that don't. The ones with, will be somehow better people than the ones that don't. Total ****ing bull**** mindsets and the media will take advantage, just like they always do. And the jogginass and misterills of the world will be standing there with their pitch forks screaming like the **** assess they seem to act like,  looking to burn folks at the stake for having an opinion or exercising a health choice. Sorry asses living in a so-called country with free speech and free thinking. Again, total bull****

Honestly, this vaccine issue shouldn't be any more polarizing than whether or not the earth is round.

But unfortunately there always seem to be small groups of asshats who decided to try and make it into an issue. So you end up with flat earthers and anti-vaxxers screaming at the clouds.

    Get the f-ing vaccine already.

Smh. This is going to be one of those polarizing subjects. To say get the vaccine (especially if it is for the sake of football) is extremely irresponsible and short sighted. If its a choice, its f-ing choice. We're talking about people that believe the vax could cause health issues. Its not about not getting vax in some cases. When is the last time you've seen a vax come out so quickly? Is it really safe? Or is it some sort of placeholder/experiment? Vax usually takes years to develop/test and get approved. You have Jason William (NBA announcer) that tested pos after getting the shot. Go figure. This seems to be about football and convenience. Everyone should maintain their privacy in this regard IMO. The herding mentality is raising its ugly head at this point. Right now, the media is talking about it in ways that virtually vilifies those that don't want the vaccine. And the NFL and Ron is not helping. He is entitled to speak his opinion. But he is literally putting pressure through the media on players that don't have it. Players that don't have the shot have not been identified. But rest assured, it will be leaked. And of course these player will be bad guys. And to that, ask yourself if the same energy towards the vax is going on with baseball or hockey. Not a peep from the media on those leagues.

I kinda disagree that Scherff was drafted as a Left Tackle. I don't think most people believed he'd be a LT in the NFL. Pretty much all analysts agreed that his place as an upper echelon guy in the league would be at Guard. IIRC they did let him try at Tackle at first to see what happened, but the reports weren't very good and they quickly made the decision to move him inside.

IMO Cosmi is a much more natural Tackle with his combination of size, length, and insane athleticism.

IMO putting a guy with the kind of freakish combination of size, length and athleticism that Cosmi has at Guard would be a waste. He may need some technique clean up but his ability is off the charts. I'm really hoping he ends up our long term answer at LT.

His athleticism is ideal for a pulling guard. But I do think he'll be a tackle. But much like Scherff who was drafted as a left tackle, we'll see where he fits.

You're right.  Heineke has a mastery of the offense, kindof the way Colt McCoy had a mastery of Gruden's offense.

The problem with Heineke is 2 fold (interestingly, the same 2 problems Colt had):

    1. He can't stay healthy.  He's been hurt in every game he's played.  Now, he's put on 15 lbs, and maybe that changes.  But that's his history so far.

    2. He would be in the bottom 1/3 of the league of arm strength.  And that DOES matter.  Mostly, it matters because you can NEVER be late on a throw.  If you're even a hair late, the ball won't get where it needs to when it needs to, and it will result in at best an incompletion, and worst an interception. If everything is running smoothly, and the ball is out on time all the time, it's less of an issue.

But what arm strength does more than anything else is it gives you a little more margin for error.  The best example of this was Favre.  Favre was late on decisions A LOT.  But, he had such a good arm, he could make up the difference by just throwing the ball harder. At least some of the time.

I like Heineke, but he's going to have to show he can stay healthy.  There's not much he can do about the second issue, it kindof is what it is.  But  think he has enough arm strength to at least be a competent fill-in starter for a while.  I just think it limits his ceiling.

I want to see him compete with Fitz.  And if he out-performs him, I'd like to see him get the opportunity to start.  But the two things above are just facts, and he's going to have to overcome them.

Santana Moss and Brandon Scherff couldn't/can't stay healthy. Santana started his career with the can't stay healthy narrative. Personally, if a guy is healthy, I can't concern myself with the past as it relates to what he can bring to the team right now. If that were the case, Scherff should be released immediately.

I'd like to see solid evidence that his arm strength is in the bottom 1/3. But to that, while arm strength is nice, its a bit overrated (see DH). I'd rather see solid anticipation and the ability to throw guys open than a guy with arm strength. Now with that said, if we had a QB with both (ala Aaron Rogers), that would be fantastic. But Kurt Warner and Drew Brees comes to mind when I think about QB with a great grasp of an offense but without great arm strength. Fact is, he's got an NFL arm or he wouldn't be playing in the league.

So what exactly are you suggesting? We're not benching Brandon Scherff. He's an All Pro lineman, that would be absurd. Its too late to trade him now. We play him for this year, we owe it to everyone to play the best players and it makes no sense to bench a guy on franchise tag money.

I am definitely not suggesting that. Jumping to conclusions is not good for anyone btw. What I am saying is that Rivera doesn't strike me as a guy that cares about titles. All-pro is a title or phrase base on the past. Much like Dogecoin to the moon was. Throw some money at that coin based on the past and see where it gets you. I do believe Scherff will win the position based on performance. But I think its absurd to reference titles or pay to validate that position. I also think there is going to be competition at all positions and its not going to be given. But to your point, if they are willing to give him franchise money, they clearly think highly of him. But that's as far as it goes IMO. If Scherff decides to chill this year or make business decisions in order to stay healthy for that big payday, he's got legitimate comp waiting in the wings to replace him this year. Again, we'll see.

  12. 4 hours ago, Warhead36 said:

Yeah there is no way Scherff isn't the best RG on the team. He's arguably the 2nd best player all around on the entire team. No amount of balling out the other guys do will allow them to catch up to Scherff and Cosmi is going to play T(either left or right is TBD but we didn't draft him in the 2nd to play G).

We'll see. I'm not down on Scherff. But I definitely don't see him as the 2nd best player on the team. But you did say arguably so there is that. Bottom line for me is that Scherff will not be here next year. If that is the case why would the team not look to the guys they brought in this year? As a matter of fact, why even allow him to play if you have even remotely comparable talent under contract? They went out and got two starting linemen from other teams. That has to account for something. Starters are not coming to teams to play backup. Jus sayin'. Remember Scherff was not drafted by this regime, just like Moses wasn't. The team was 3-13 when Rivera come here. So last year was an audition for everyone. I am very excited to see what happens in training camp. Hopefully for Scherff, he plays well enough for the team to have to seriously consider signing him to a long term deal. If he wants to stay here, he'll re-sign.

BTW, the majority of linemen we have was a college LT draft pick converted to another position on the line, including Scherff. Not far fetched at all to see Cosmi inside.

  13. I suppose the question is this....is Scherff the best RG on the team? I only say this because I thought Moses was the best RT on the team. Rivera has repeatedly said that he is going to play the best 11. I realize the long term deal was not done partly due to the current salary cap. I mean if Brandon signs a deal this year, he'd be locked into to a lower contract overall than comparable or lessor guards signing deals next year. To me, this is a just bad timing. But what if Rivera and Matsko decide Cosmi has won the job? What if (one of the guys they brought in) Wes Schweitzer and Flowers ball out in camp? I really didn't see a significant drop off when Scherff was out of the lineup. And this year, I wouldn't have an issue with either of the above guys. I didn't even mention (the mauler IMO), Saahdiq Charles. I get that he was selected as an AP and has made the pro bowl. Personally, I only take AP into account. And to that, I like Scherff and think he's a good player. Is he an impact player? I don't think so tbh.

Now with all that said, Scott Turner had this to say about Brandon:

"Brandon's toughness, his consistency and then just the resiliency that he shows dealing with that injury early in the year, being able to come back," ....."He's just been a steady rock. Him and Morgan playing on that right side together -- obviously, Morgan moved over to left tackle for the Dallas game. Those guys working together, playing together, and then obviously Chase [Roullier] at center. Those are the leaders up front for us. They've done a great job, Brandon in particular. He brings it every day. He's the same guy, the toughness, the blue-collar mentality. It helps, energizes and drives our team."

Moses was released with time on his contract so there is that. But like Rich Tandler used to say, watch what they do, not what they say. We'll see.

  14. Turner was a year 1 coordinator with horrid QB play, young inexperience WRs, a RB that never played the position and a average at best OL. Additionally, no offseason to learn what your players can do situationally. This year the focus is on position flex and speed. I also go back to that clip of McVay sitting on the bench with #8 stating that he is learning.

  15. Interesting and somewhat alarming video. I'll definitely have my eye on this guy's channel. I'll also be interested to hear a real sports reporter ask Turner about this and what his plan is to improve moving into next year. That is the line of questioning I'd like to see and hear. All the questions about how a grown ass man feels, what his thoughts are on social issues and how he feels about Dan not being in the building (which you know is coming), is ****ing bull**** IMO. This analysis is what I think a football enthusiast wants. I'm old enough to know how I feel about COVIT test and every other polarizing element. I don't need a sports personalities view. Its ****ing meaningless if I'm coming to watch a football game. But I digress. Hope Gibson improves along with a solidified and effective scheme. If they do, this year is going to be fun!

  16. That Tampa game was extremely maddening. I get bad calls. Its part of the game. But when you watch that game, you'll notice the timing of calls. It very easy to call holding on every play. But when you call holding on 3rd down, I look closer. We had two 3rd down calls that pretty much stopped reasonable good drives. That is the hidden yardage that kills. Its also a sneaky way to create momentum. That game was total bull**** from an officiating standpoint.

  17. I have yet to witness Heineke not knowing where to go with ball. He has a great grasp of the offense and Devin has not been in the league long enough to trick a QB that know what they're doing. Heinike was able to manuever Todd Bowles' tricks. So to me Devin is irrelevant in that regard. He may have made some plays but he ain't causing a shutdown on his own.
