  1. Rest in Peace RBG ☹️

I wonder about the political calculus here. If Trump and Co ram through a new Justice (I expect them to) doesn't Trump lose a bit of motivation for his voters? The judges thing is pretty much a done deal.

Here's a bit of info to pass along:

    https://www.thoughtco.com/confirming-u-s-supreme-court-nominees-3879361

So it would be quite unusual to have a justice nominated and confirmed in the next oh... 45 days.

They have until January. I don't think anything will stop them, certainly not a sense of honor or decorum.

  2. Pretty good article. I would argue that these people who felt ostracized during the Obama administration didn't take into account the damage they have done to themselves supporting a man who is happy to champion them in exchange for their votes but probably holds them in contempt like everyone else he successfully cons.

The v shaped recovery is a real thing backed by people with real credentials

some of the people throwing it around a buffoons, but that theory has solid grounding. Namely that economic fundamentals haven’t really changed and while they weren’t great before they weren’t awful either.

the caveat is that it’s hard to predict what structural changes will come about due to how long this drags out.

I don't buy this. It ignores the huge number of people who have suffered financial hits over four months now and who's jobs are not likely to come back anytime soon. Even after a vaccine is available (which will take a long time to get distributed) a large number of people are going to be reticent to go out to eat, go to concerts, sporting events, etc. Maybe if it had "just gone away" in May things would have quickly bounced back. The faucet is getting turned off on the 3 trillion in free money that's been floating the economy and if, as I suspect, the Ds take over in January the Rs are going to be fighting tooth and nail for austerity because of the "disastrous national debt".

Are you talking worldwide? Right now, where is it, 500-600k?

In the US, initial range was 100-240k with social distancing and all. Daunting numbers to be sure, but I'm optimistic we will stay in that range.

You would hope so but there's a real good chance we're looking at a repeat of April coming up. I don't think 500k but coming close to 240k or even surpassing that this year wouldn't surprise me.

I was at Best Buy the other day and as soon you walked in there was a table there with the employee telling the customer the expectations and how they can help them. They also had bottles of hand sanitizers and were giving out free masks. I was impressed. 😊

That is awesome but I would like to see (maybe it's already happening) distribution of these supplies to impoverished areas by the government.

I don't stay home either. I have been to 4 animal hospitals where most of the employees were not even wearing a mask. Two nursery homes in the last 2 months. As an IT guy I have to be out and about too. I don't have a fancy N95 with outlets or anything. Again, I will do whatever it takes to protect myself regardless of what others are doing. That is my main point.

Do you really need a mask ordinance? I would think by now it would just be common sense.

I know you like to bring the poor into this but even the poor can get a decent mask (if not already have) for under $50. I would hope one could afford that and that it is more important than their life. you don't have to have a N95 to be safe. Multi-layered masks are efficient as well. The droplets laced with the virus will be filtered. You can spray your mask with 70% isopropyl alcohol and can reuse the masks or extended it's usage. Again, you don't have to break the bank to stay alive.

Masks should be given out for free to whoever needs one. Hand sanitizer should be given out free. It's stupid how basic things have been neglected in favor of pretending the virus will go away because we want it to.

^^Just playing Devil's advocate here, but Andrew Jackson, while being a terrible person, was still a president.  Not every statue of him has to signify allegiance to confederate ideals...

And I am outright surprised by pulling down the Roosevelt statue.  Whats the meaning behind that?

Roosevelt statue at museum of natural history has a Native American and am African leading the horse Teddy is riding on either side. It's the subservience depicted rather than TR in specific that caused offense I believe, and I can see why.

Man this is all just crazy. I wonder what that cop is thinking right now, his actions have caused riots and distress across the entire globe. Maybe I’m “privileged” but I’m just not really sure why people want to sit in a circle holding hands in front of a swat/riot team. Just doesn’t make any sense to me. I can never understand people who can actually just go into stores and steal stuff with this is going on, nothing is worse than a thief. Some people just have no decency, makes me want to take my family and move to the mountains.

Big difference between people sitting in a circle and looters. Something has to be done. Privilege is being able to sit back and observe from afar, which in all honesty is what I am doing.

  9. There is a really cool trail that goes down below the dam at Rocky Gap. When at Greenbrier you can hike the AT to Black Rock to the north or Washington Monument to the south. As others mentioned Dolly Sods, Otter Creek etc in WV are fantastic. Big Schloss in GWNF on the Big Blue trail on the WV VA state line is great. Rip Rap trail in Shenandoah NP has some nice swimming holes, also White Oak canyon. If you like beach camping Cape Lookout is incredible.

No I don't have kids but still, I must respectfully decline your advice to STFU.

I think one (of many) problem in this country is parents not taking enough responsibility.  And just because I don't have kids doesn't mean I'm not exposed enough to parenting.  I'm just as qualified as anyone else here to form an opinion without being privy to the whole backstory.

Went back to see what the fuss was about. The son is 45. His life experiences (probably 25+ years of listening to Hannity and Limbaugh) may outweigh his upbringing by now. I have heard a lot of anecdotes about people's parents going fringe. The propaganda machines on both sides have become very influential.

Drinking alcohol won’t protect you against COVID-19, experts say

Although alcohol is a key ingredient in hand sanitizers that can help kill the coronavirus, alcoholic drinks don’t have the same effect and may actually hinder your immune system’s response to COVID-19, the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism is cautioning consumers.

To be effective against the coronavirus, hand sanitizers must contain at least 60% ethyl alcohol, NIAAA says in a May 12 press release. In contrast, a typical drink is only 0.01% to 0.03% alcohol – “a tiny fraction of the concentration needed to produce an antiseptic action.” A blood-alcohol concentration of 0.4% can be fatal.

“Alcohol misuse makes the body more susceptible to viral infections and can worsen the prognosis,” the institute adds. “Alcohol in the body at the time of exposure to a pathogen tends to impair the body’s immediate immune response to the pathogen, making it easier for an infection to develop.”

Not really why I'm drinking. Aren't most beers around 5% ABV? Wine 10%?

I have a new born. I consider him a high risk candidate for things like this even though it doesn’t seem to target children. I have an elderly family member as well that is prone to sickness. For these reasons I took and still take extra precaution around them.

but that shouldn’t necessarily be the case for everyone and I’m not going to judge others for feeling they have to work or get out of their house to provide for themselves and their families.

ive also seen how these sicknesses get hyped up by media before, and both political sides have gone out of their way to influence the media to their own agenda. It’s disgusting quite frankly and makes it difficult to understand what the real statistics are.

What we are doing as a country is giving in to blind fear. Untold deaths from cancers and other progressive diseases will be a result. We are forcing people to stay at homes and wreck themselves financially, becoming more dependent on the government and a faulty economic system. the government is going to have to bailout the entire country on a state level.

you wanna stay at home, are you very risk averse or more prone to sickness? You do you..but be aware of the liberty you are losing and don’t attempt to force me to follow suit.

Counterpoint: People not taking it seriously are going to make things worse for all of us. This is a new reality, we have to adapt to it to be able to successfully move about. If everyone was careful we could knock this thing down to a manageable size. It seems likely we are going to see an uptick soon because people want to pretend it's over.

My point is we have to reopen society, but we don't have to crowd together without any consideration for the reality that this thing is still spreading and there is no cure or vaccine likely for months at best.

  13. I will add this, it's not just this one place. This attitude is likely prevalent in the area and you're going to have a ripe situation for something like this:

It's really not that big of a deal unless you are an at risk person. In which case you should quarantine yourself.

    This isn't rocket science people.

Do you have elderly relatives? Do you visit them? Are their interactions only with "at risk" people? Perhaps their caregiver is enjoying their weekend?

Add: Or maybe their caregivers kid. I don't know how this is going to turn out, but it seems to me we could try to be careful for a while to see if it goes away. Acting on our desires may or may not cost people lives, but my guess is it will.

I’ll do the math on that video...

Lets say 80% are young and very low risk.  Other 20% are 45+ and/or have assorted comorbidities.  Let’s say 1500 people in that shot.

IF, big IF, there are 5 asymptomatic carriers there...cause these folks aren’t completely brain dead.  Nobody is showing up there with a 101 fever, hacking all over the place.  Factor in some breezy sunshine and warm temps.  Then those five will infect say 100 people.  Of that 100, you’ll get 90 that fight it off, 10 that go to the hospital and 2 that die.

Now that’s not good...at all.  But, it’s not an apocalyptic event as a special occasion/holiday deal...especially if all the attendees spend the next 8-10 days masked up.

The issue is doing this kind of thing all day, every day all summer long.  That 2% is gonna add up quick.

If I had to guess, I’d say that the math of the “new normal” is gonna put a damper on pool season pretty quick.

You left out how many people the 100 will infect. Or what age they will be. And if they aren't wearing a mask there (or even being there), I'm thinking they aren't wearing a mask anywhere. Those people don't believe they are going to get sick.

To be fair, 5 asymptomatic cases might be high, but the idea that some idiot who has a cold is going to miss out on drinking and chasing the opposite sex on one of the three big summer holiday weekends is optimistic.

I used to live in KC. Lake of the Ozarks is going to pull a lot of people from KC and St Louis. There's a very low incidence in the local area but I suspect that will change after this weekend.

Saw this article on Market Watch today regarding the stock market:

    https://www.marke****ch.com/story/did-the-coronavirus-keep-the-stock-market-from-taking-an-even-bigger-hit-2020-05-21?mod=home-page

What bothers me is: don't the conditions that persisted pre-coronavirus still exist?  I think there's a consensus that the markets are still overvalued.  I'm not sure that the Dow will make it back down to the 18.5K level it hit before the 6K rebound since, but I can see it going back down to around 20K before it gets back to its February highs of 29.5K.

When people realize that this has changed consumer spending looong term watch out.
