Before the biggest day of his life, QB Drake Maye played 4-on-4 basketball in Detroit-area with his brothers & friends last night. His dad on pins & needles. Drake told me, “I’m healthy. We just love to compete.” From @nflnetwork on Maye, the competitor & potential top-3 pick:

Dont do that man. Just cheer for whoever we pick. Or **** about him. That's what being a fan is all about.

I intend to do that, but it's easy to get distracted with all these click-bait articles and videos. I get that Maye is old news and our media sustains itself by propping up fresh news and speculation, but facts remain facts whether the media likes it or not. I don't feel Maye has ever left our sights.

Brace yourself for resurgence of recently departed folks who will post as though they are far more JD enthusiasts than Commanders fans and some size of urge of newcomers doing the same. Those who have been here awhile will know whereof I speak. 😄

It's interesting that for the longest time Maye was seen more as a "different but generally equal" prospect to JD but recently is apparently more thought of as  someone distinctly a step down and "not that close to JD" as a #2 pick, specifically.

I thought at first it was kinda weird we had such an influx of "highly enthused" (avoiding the negative term "fanboy" ) but none for Maye. But I soon figured it just reflected how much more fans followed the LSU program/games.

Man. It's hard to wait for #2 to happen tonight, but then it's going to be really hard waiting for tomorrow and (who knows yet for sure how many) really important picks  in round 2 & 3.

    😬

Maye's my pick and always will be my pick. I'm so sure he'll be in a Washington jersey (or at least a hat) in 7 hours, I'm willing to stake my membership here and leave for good if it doesn't happen. Everything we've heard up to now has been noise and it's lying season. Maye is the one, everything else is social media nonsense.

It's officially official when the pick is made.  Until then we all dream on.  It begins later this evening.  I'll be glad when the decision has been made.

    Correct.

How many of us thought we were going to draft Kellen Winslow in 2004, after everyone hyped up the match, before ST’s name was called? There was even a TV commercial of him donning Redskins paraphernalia before draft day.

Eisen, Florio and Simms all pushing today that the rumors are that Daniels does not want to come to Washington, with Simms saying he heard Daniels had cold feet about Washington even prior to Top Golf-Gate.

Keim saying to ignore the noise and that the team doesn't care what he or the agent think, if they want him they're taking him.

There you go. Daniels is probably hoping we pass and he drops to 3 where NE is open for business and Antonio Pierce can make the Godfather offer. Peters prob doesn't give a **** and is going to take him if he's the guy (*if* he's the guy).

I'm not a general manager or a football expert, but my years as a director of Human Resources has taught me if someone's heart and/or focus isn't in the work, position, or the department in which they work, you don't try to force them to like it or adjust to the situation. I'm pretty sure these are just rumors, but if there is any semblance of truth in them, then I would hope that Peters takes JD's reservations and preference into serious consideration. Full transparency, I'm a Maye fan and hope we select him this week, as there's nothing I've learned of JD, either from this knowledgeable board or from the numerous NFL analysts/hosts, that has convinced me that he's the better fit for this team.

So Hoge didn’t like Rodgers, Mahomes, or Herbert? He doesn’t like toolsy guys who can break the rules, makes sense if he’s consistent in that regard. Probably didn’t like Josh Allen or even Can Newton then? Assume he didn’t like Anthony Richardson either.

Collectively, those seven average less than 1 Super Bowl title between them, so maybe he's on to something.

But how often are QBs dinged for poor leadership? Every single one of them has their teammates rave about em. The only one I can think of is Spencer Rattler this year.

Basically, just about every highly touted QB prospect has good leadership. When was the last time you read through the pros and cons of a prospect and it says "bad leader" under cons? It never happens. So its kinda pointless to discuss. We should just work under the assumption that all these highly rated QBs are good leaders. And there is no way to measure if Maye is a better or worse leader than Daniels, or McCarthy etc.

How often does a NY Times best seller get dinged for being a bad book? Usually all of them will get rave reviews, right, but there's still room for critical analysis based on impressions from credible sources, additional outlets, commercial responses, and observation. The same for QBs, even at this stage. Granted, the number of people calling them bad leaders will be in the minority, just like any critical reception of a NY times best seller, but we can still discuss the who, what, why, how of those impressions, determining if they're sufficient, and incorporate them into a critical analysis of each QB.

  8. 44 minutes ago, Warhead36 said:

I think its a qualitative measure in that you either have it or you don't, but you can't MEASURE it. Like ok, how much better of a leader is, say, McCarthy over Nix? 10%? 20%? And what is that based off of? Is a QB a better leader because his team wins more? If that's the case, why not just draft the national champion QB #1 overall every year?

And you pretty much never hear of any QB being a bad leader in this stage of the process(except maybe Rattler). Zach Wilson's college teammates raved about him too.

That's my point. Its not a quantifiable measure so its mostly just pointless to talk about when evaluating college draft prospects.

Of course you can measure leadership. Not by percentages or rating scales, but by testimonies from teammates, coaches, and even rivals, and correlating that data with their own performance record, you'll have a pretty good idea. You can always find some exception or outlier, namely an individual who's a winner and everyone raves about his leadership skills (including setting a good example, helping teammates, etc)....only for them to be a poor leader in all actuality. That's rare.

Since you've deemed it's a pointless pursuit to discuss it, we'll just talk about what you want to talk about. How's that?

  9. Leadership is a big deal to this regime, and I suspect they'll want to measure the leadership capabilities of these QBs. Maybe they'll look past certain physical deficiencies if the QB more than makes up for it with leadership skills. While virtually all QBs are naturally shoehorned as leaders for their teams, do we know which of the QB finalists have that particular attribute nailed down?

Personal opinion and have said it before and it's been said plenty of time.  Great talent, great IQ, great everything but his frame and build will do him in unfortunately.  He may have 1-3 years at best in the NFL and I hate to use a onetime NFL HC's analysis stands for Not For Long for Daniels. Sadly, he'll never be able to hold weight needed to play in the Pros.  Nothing can change that except for Steroids which are illegal.  If we draft him, I root for him as I will whoever it is but again, sadly he won't be around long.

I agree. I’d be concerned for him if we had Fort Knox as our offensive line, which we do not. Without the additional weight to cushion impacts against his bones, joints, and organs, injuries will be reoccurring and stunt his career.

Are the Washington Redskins team name and logo still trademarked? Have a friend who owns a screen printing and apparel company and wanted him to make some stuff for me.

I’d assume it still is otherwise wouldn’t they be forfeiting rights to all historic data and media containing the name?

Other than Tom Brady, who was in a unique situation, name me one professional athlete who didn't try to maximize their income in their short window of opportunity. He was just better at it than others.  For this he is hated for being smart? Not in my book.

I think the fact he's signing to his third team and receiving yet another big payday paints him as a detached mercenary, add on top of that the stark inequivalence between his performance and expectations of him as manifested by his compensation, and it paints him as a detached mercenary who doesn't produce.

We'll see, Minnesota and Denver are still QB hamstrung but I would think you're right. Vegas signing Minshew is probably a great indicator that us and NE aren't budging..

I wonder what the G men will do for QB, now that the FA market is not a solution and it’ll seem unlikely that can trade up to secure a top 3 rookie. Wait until next year and ride with Jones for one more season, or trade draft capital for a legit vet?

Eh the way he is going he's going to be Dan Marino in the stats category.. Dan never got a ring but he is in the HoF

Dan was also a generational talent, won an MVP, broke a ton of passing records, played for a legendary coach, and is still a god in Miami.

Cousins will go down as one of the savviest QBs to ever game the system. Mad respect.

I think we deserve some credit for molding him into a pragmatic, cynical businessman early on in his career. There were no NFL fairytales around here. Playing for slimeballs like Bruce and Snyder taught him quickly.

It's great that Howell has so much value. Even Keim believes they can get a third for him. I believe some teams may value him more than Fields because of his contract.

I think we need Sam this year, to help bring the rookie QB along through competition and collaboration.

Plus we could get more for Howell next season.

If he's put in a few games to spell the rookie (e.g., big lead, or injury) and he exhibits flashes of brilliance in this offense - maybe win us a couple of game - his stock will rise. I just think it's a short-sighted move to let him go this season for what arguably could be chump change.
