  1. double dry hopped double **** 2006..lol

but on a regular drinking i go with either oaked AB or ruination IPA.

I've never had the "double dry hopped double **** 2006", but as a hop-head, I imagine that it's fantastic.

You're "regular" drinking beer goes for $19.99 and $10.49 a six-pack, around here.

That free beer is a kick-ass bennie!

You should definitely invest in a kegerator.

  2. working at stone....well these are the beer privleges.

a free 2 liter growler every day

free beer at the bar every day

    a free keg every month

    a free case every month

and free beer of the month every month..

the TNP and STB were "smoked" but basically it tasted like a shot of burboun with campfire smell over it..no bueno.

    Sooo...what's your favorite, so far?

  3. :pint:

oh how life has changed since I was on here last. I now work at Stone Brewery (the makers of Arrogant **** Ale amongst other great beers) and thats opened so many doors for me its unreal.

last Friday the owner of Brew Dog was there and I tried the following

    Tokio - 18.2%

    Tactical Nuclear Penguin - 32%

    Sink the Bismark - 41%

they were all horrible but I can say I have tried them.

I don't think anything called beer can't taste anything but horrible with an ABV that high.

The alcohol would probably overwhelm everything.

How cool is it working for Stone? Do they hook employees up with discounts? A buddy of mine works for a local Baltimore brewer, (Heavy Seas...formerly Clipper City), and they give employees either 4 cases or a keg of beer each month.

Arrogant **** is good stuff. I even broke down and dropped $19.00 for 6-pack of the Oaked version,(which was excellent but, at that price, won't be doing that too often!). I wish Stone beers were more reasonable here. There must not be a big market for it around here, as it's cheaper in grocery stores in Cali, than it is at liquor stores in MD.

So...when do we get the hookup for some cool Stone swag?? :pint:

  4. I usually use a pint glass as well but have you ever tried a sherry type of glass for a stout?

I have some vintage dated Barley Wine Style Ales that I've been hoarding, and drinking from time to time. Heavy Seas Below Decks. I've got a few bottles from '06, '07 & '08. :D I missed out on this past winters release.

Anyway, we have a tulip-shaped glass that I drink those out of.

  5. ya, it sounds like i definitely got a bad batch then, cuz i just had a FD IPA last night and it was nothing like that.

sux that i got 2 bad 6ers of FD in the past month though. its not like you can return it for a fresh one.

The liquor stores that I go to would take 'em back. They'll just give them back to the distributors who, in turn, should tell the brewery. If bad beer is getting out, or if beer is not being handled properly, the brewery definitely wants to know.

I got a couple of funky bottles of "9", brewed by Magic Hat, in a sampler pack. There was syrupy, splotchy stuff under the crown and neck of the bottles. I tried one, and it was indeed, funky. The rest of the beers were fine. Since they were part of a sampler, (and I was lazy), I did not exchange the 12-pack.

I did e-mail the brewery and told them where, and when, I bought it. I described the issues, and I saved a bottle, and offered to mail it to them. I got an immediate response. They were apologetic, and very grateful. They also sent me some cool SWAG.

Picked up a bad sixer of Petes last week, two bottles were opened, I returned them, no questions asked. If you still have more than 4 left, I would take them back.

Good call. If the retailer refused to take them back, then I would find somewhere else to buy my beer.

Don't forget, that the Heavy Seas Real Ale & BBQ fest is in 2 weeks. The event is almost sold out. Me and a few buddies will be there. If any of my fellow beer geeks are going, please shoot me a PM.

I know it's short notice, but those of you who can make it should have a great time. Basically, the party is held inside of the brewery, which is an old warehouse. In addition to their regular beers, they'll have casks of ale and plenty of BBQ, ribs, pulled pork, brisket, fixin's, etc. Of course, it's all you care to eat and drink and there will be live music.

The tickets with the "amusement tax" come $53.90 each. I believe that they offer DD tickets for $39.90 inclusive of the fee.

Here's the link to the tickets.

Here's a link to the brewery event page and, I believe, that you can purchase tickets on this site too.

I hope to see some of you there!

  6. I just bought my ticket for the Real Ale & BBQ fest, which is on 3-27 from 12-4.

BTW....we're leaving the wives home for this one. :paranoid: :beerglass

If you go, please make arrangements for a DD, or a taxi ride home. While they do have lighter offerings, the "Heavy Seas" line of beers are all in the 7% - 10% ABV range.

If any of you are going, please shoot me a PM. Hope to see some of you there!

  7. [Red Hook Long Hammer IPA (Bottle):[/color] The trip to the DFH orgasm facility set me back a few Washingtons, so I've been trying to keep the wallet healthy while making purchases of beer. Lemme tell ya, great bang for the buck! Nothing that will knock your socks off, but if you need a hop-fix and find yourself low on cash, this should not disappoint. Definitely on the bitter side, very piney, but that's exactly what I love my IPAs to taste like. Hell, I'd get this stuff even if I wasn't trying to save money. 6.5% ABV!

I was in VT a couple of weeks ago, and they had the Long Hammer IPA on draft at the hotel bar and the bar at the ski resort, (Mt. Snow), and it is excellent on tap.

  8. My g/f and I just went to Total Wine in Alexandria to get a 6-pack of Sierra Nevada Bigfoot and we ended up leaving with:

    5 different six packs

    two bottles of Champagne

    one bottle of wine

    Some of the highlights:

    a mixed 6 pack with:

    21st Amendment Watermelon Wheat

    Clay Pipe Brewing Hop-Ocalypse IPA

    Rogue Ale Mocha Porter

A****er Block Vanilla Java Porter <---lol to the profanity filters catching that (at-wa-ter in case you're wondering...not a bad word)

    Anchor Steam Beer

    Sea Dog Apricot Wheat

    and of course:

Please post and let us know what you think of the Bigfoot. I've never had it. I've only ever tried one Barley Wine style ale. Clipper City Heavy Seas Below Decks.

    BelowDecks-303_0.jpg

I'm a hop-head and this stuff has strong malt flavors. Honestly, I can only drink them once in a while. It has an ABV of 10% and is definitely a winter beer. It's a seasonal beer with a very limited release. It ages very well. It's actually amazing how the flavors evolve over time.

I have a couple of bottles of 2006, a couple of bottles from 2008 and a couple of 4-packs from 2007.

  9. If you have ever been to St. Lucia you know, but Peton beer is awesome. Its the sweet necter of heaven in a bottle. Too bad they ddon'texport to the USA

We spent a week in St. Lucia and they served Piton all over the place in both draft and bottles. It was pretty good, but I chalk that up to temps being in 90's while we were there, so it was very refreshing.

Is Clipper City Pale Ale any good? I'd love to go on a field trip, it's been like 10 years. But in the mean time I could pick up a 6'er.

    Yes...it's pretty good.

That being said, (and I'm a big fan of Clipper City beers), I prefer Sierra Nevada Pale Ale over the Clipper City.

I have a couple of vacations coming up, but I'll start a thread for a Brewery tour in March/April

  10. Yeah its definitely not cheap. I live in North Baltimore so a cab ride isn't as cheap lol. I think when we went down there a few weeks ago it was like $40 for a cab ride one way. Its insane! But Max's does have a great selection!

    Damn straight.

For the price of 2 of those cab rides, I can by an entire keg of craft-brewed beer.....

  11. I went to some BBQ fest at the brewery last year. It was a good time.

    Yeah Man!

I've been to a couple oyster feasts and the "Bacon & Beer" feast.

    They do a great job.

  12. I believe Max's has (or at least had) that on tap. No idea what they have right now since the Belgiumfest was this past weekend.

    I believe it.

Max's has a great selection, and we live about 15-20 minutes away, but we seldom go there. Parking and the whole downtown scene is kind of a hassle.

What's sad is that grocery stores in CA have a better selection of craft brews than many local liquor stores.

For my fellow beer lovers, (and those who live nearby), we ought to organize a "field trip" to the Clipper City Brewery for one of their tours. They're relatively close, (exit 9 off of the Baltimore beltway). They offer two tours every Saturday. The tours are free or $5.00 if you want a pint glass and 6 samples. They're typically entertaining, informative and fun.

I'll be tied up over the next few Saturdays, but if any of you guys are up for it, shoot me a PM and I'll get all of the info and throw it together. I think that if we get enough interest, (10+ people maybe?), that we can get a private tour.

  13. We just got back from Lake Tahoe, CA and I had the chance to try several different beers. A couple of them really stuck out.

Sierra Nevada Harvest Wet Hop Ale (2009 13th release) It was sold in 22oz, (24oz?), bottles and was excellent. Fresh, hoppy & delicious. The hops seem similiar to the ones used in the Torpedo Ale. I picked it up for around $4.00 at a grocery store.

Lake Tahoe Brewery IPA I had it on draft at the brewery. Another excellent, hoppy brew.

I also found Lagunitas IPA on tap. Unbelievably refreshing and bitter. An excelletn IPA that you can probably find around here, but not on draft.

  14. These guys had a stand at a beerfest I went to in 2008 and the Backdraft Brown was good as hell right out of the tap, but I bought a six-pack of it several weeks back and it wasn't as good. There are still two or three in my fridge because I've bought other beer since then.

No surprise here. As long as the beer lines are kept clean, and it's dispensed from a balanced system, Brewery fresh beer always tastes better.

FSU kicking WVU ass last month earned me a shipment of beer from my bro of stuff that does get distributed out West. Here is my first haul:

6-pack of Hop Slam by Belles - Bro hasn't stopped talking about how amazing this beer is. Any of you guys try it?

    22oz Southern Tier Iniquity

    Great Lakes Burning River

    2 Founder's Breakfast Stout

Victory Yakima Twilight (I actually do get Victory out here. Never seen this one before though)

Never had any of these. I have some drinking to do....

I had a sixer of the Burning River, during the Canton road trip a couple of years ago. I thought it was pretty good.

I've never tried the Yakima Delight, but I will tell you that the last 2 kegs that I tapped has been the Victory Hop Devil.

That is a hell of a beer list, but they are missing a lot of fantastic West Coast beers. Ale Smith, Port, Alpine, Lost Abbey, Ballast Point...

    Damn straight!

We're headed to Lake Tahoe. Snowboarding aside, a big part of the fun is trying all of the different West Coast beers. The grocery store in town, (Raley's), has a great selection. Hell, even the casinos all have Sierra Nevada on draft.

We always hit the Lake Tahoe Brewery too. I'm going to try to find some of those beers that you posted and give 'em a try. We're headed there next week and can't wait!!

  15. I

If you are looking to try some stouts here are a couple that I would recommend.

    Young's Double Chocolate

Guinness or Murphy's (very similar, these are classic Irish Ales but are in the stout family)

Left Hand Milk Stout (no milk is actually used)

Sierra Nevada stout (if you like pilsners you will probably like the hopps in this one)

    Jefferson Reserve Bourbon Barrel stout

Chicory Stout by Dogfish Head (another hoppy stout but with an interesting spice)

Locally, try Clipper City's Peg Leg Stout.

It's brewed near Baltimore and it's very good.

  16. I'm drinking a Pipeline Porter right now. It's brewed by Kona Brewing Co.

It's a limited release porter that contains "100% Hawaiian Kona coffee".

It's pretty thin, as far as porters go, (and don't do porters to often), but it's drinkable If I was in the mood for a real porter, I'd opt for a Samuel Smiths Taddy, or an Anchor.

The Kona is a tad too carbonated, but the coffee flavors work. I won't have any problems finishing this sixer, but I doubt that I'd buy it again.

During the games, I'll switch between Loose Cannon and Snake Dog.

  17. you are spot on about the ABV of the loose cannon. you can only have 1 or 2. they used to have it on tap at champions in frederick. i toured the brewery last year. not a bad time.

i tried the duclaws beer thats, i think, 20% ABV last year at the frederick beer fest. couldnt handle more than a sip. i'll have to try the hellrazer.

flying dog IPA and classic pale ale arent bad. the sierra nevada torpedo ale is similar in hoppiness to the loose cannon.

    :applause:

    I love the Torpedo.

The problem, here in MD, is that the minimum order for distributorships is 1000cases and they don't often buy very often. At least that's what the guy at the liquor store told me. If you ever see it, buy it!

In a couple of weeks, we're headed back to Lake Tahoe, CA. They have a huge variety of craft-brewed beer. In fact, the "house" beer on draft at many watering holes is Sierra Nevada Pale Ale.

    I can't wait!!!

  18. Haha, I don't blame you man. I would've craved a real beer after that too.

Not a bad idea. I've never thought of using them for cooking.

I like a few of Sam Adams beers but mainly the Boston Lager and Winter Lager. A lot of people talk about the Octoberfest, but I've never thought it was anything special.

I've tried the Octoberfest on draft, and in bottles, and thought it tasted like sour Yuengling, but I'm probably not a good judge, as I'm not a fan of any Octoberfest beer.

I'm serious about using it for cooking. I was gifted a sampler, that included some type of fruity beer. (Cherry Wheat?)

I used it to make some kick-ass beer-battered onion rings, zucchini & squash. I used the black lager to cook up some fried catfish and it turned out great!

  19. And the Cranberry Lambic, I have to say that its the first Sam Adam's that I didn't like, WAY too sweet, it has cranberries and maple syrup in it, I've still got another one in my fridge anyone want it?
Yeah my girlfriend will take it. I give her the Cranberry Lambic and Cherry Wheats out of my mixed packs lol.

Use them to make beer batter for onion rings, or fish & chips.

With the exception of the Boston Lager, and one of the porters, I'm not a big fan of Sam Adam's.

  20. how dare you replace the loose cannon?!?! thats great stuff.

i had some victory hop devil last year, and it is good stuff.

guess we both love hoppy beers.

LOL! Agreed. Loose Cannon is my favorite.

The "problem" is the ABV. 7.25% is a tad high, especially since the majority of my beer glasses are pints. ;) I still drink Loose Cannon, but I buy it by the six-pack.

I was pleasantly surprised on Saturday night. We went to Armadillo's,(in Annapolis), and they had Clipper City Beers on tap. Loose Cannon and Winter Storm.

The Hop Devil is fantastic beer and, with an ABV of around 6.7%, it's a little less high octane. If they could put all of the flavor of a Loose Cannon, in a lower ABV beer, I would buy it. The only thing close, IMHO, is Duclaws Brewing Co. Hellrazer or Venom. They're 6.2% & 5.6% respectively.

They're both hoppy,(though not as hopped up as Loose Cannon), I prefer Hellrazer because of the bitterness, and the lower ABV. They also use a different style of hops, that makes the Hellrazer more refreshing.

If you're a hophead, you can't go wrong with any of the above.

  21. Do you guys get Magic Hat down there? It's from Vermont I believe and getting pretty popular here. It's fantastic.

The No 9 and now the Winter Brew is killing it. I didn't like the summer beer, Wacko though.

Also, the folks who make Victory beers are just sick people. Everything they make is high in alcohol. They have even told me they are sick people. OLS

I just tapped a keg of Victory Hop Devil a couple of weeks ago.

It does have a relatively high ABV of 6.7%, but it's so flavorful, that you don't even notice it.

It's actually replaced Clipper City's Loose Cannon as my "house" beer.

Everytime this thread is resurrected, I feel like having a beer.....

  22. Last week I bought a case from Costco, and it's... wait for it...

    ...Kirkland brand beer.

A variety pack - "Handcrafted Lagers and Ales". The beers carry Costco's Kirkland signature brand and are brewed and bottled by the New York Brewing Company, Utica New York.

    gord-0209-ks-beer_lo1.jpg

Six bottles of Amber Ale. Six bottles of Pale Ale. Six bottles of German-style Lager. And six bottles of Hefeweizen. The case was 19 bucks - less than $5.00 per six pack. I've tried each, and each type is actually pretty good beer. You can't beat the price if you can get past the lack of cachet of drinking a Costco brand beer.

    How's the Pale Ale?
