Too rich for me. I’d be out on that.

Long respect, but don't understand this at all. If they have any intention of starting a rookie a QB, the plan so far feels like a disaster.  I'd do pretty much anything to give short term protection to the rookie instead of working on the defense or anything else.  The rookie QB is what matters, that's it and that's all.  If there isn't a definitive plan to cure the o-line, this feels like Ron is in control.  I don't like it at all. Would have much rather overpaid for a mid talent like Jonah Williams to help, he got a very palatable 2 year deal as it is with Arizona.

Jonah Williams is an example of the type of guy who I don't want. He's going to get overpaid by someone given his draft pedigree. He is not a good tackle whether it is the right side or the left side. He is McGlinchey 2.0

I'd rather they overpay for a decent LT than watch the same movie we did last year on the OL.  Its unlikely the team will be able to adequately address the OL strictly through the draft.  IMO, if they don't spend considerable FA resources upgrading the OL, they'd be better off sitting our rookie QB for a year.

  3. The issue with the trade down is we need a QB and there is no guarantee we get the guy we want if we make the trade. If it was a guarantee, I'd be 100% behind a trade down where we get Penix.  If he fails, we will  have a top pick next year and/or would have tons of ammo to further build the roster or trade up as necessary in the future for a QB.  Its actually a risk mitigating strategy if you aren't sold on Maye/Daniels.  I'd expect a qualified front office to do something like this if they aren't sold on the current year prospects.  That said, I'd draft Maye.

Personally, not my top choice, but I could get behind trading back and grabbing Penix, heck I could get behind trading back multiple times and grabbing Penix in the late 1st this year as long as he doesn’t rise up the board to much. We could potentially trade back 2 times to get him and stack our team with 4 extra 1st round picks in the next 2 drafts, at least 3 extra 1sts and a second+

I don't think a trade down is optimal and I certainly would not take Penix at 2 but I would not hate this plan.

Well, I think before the transfer to Washington, nobody really knew whether Penix was really good or not - he never played in more than 7 games in any of his four years at Indiana, because of all the injuries, and especially the last 2 years there, he was playing pretty much hurt all the time, so his numbers weren't good at all.

Following up on this, its not hard to find evidence of the talent while he was at Indiana. When you suggest his numbers weren't good, its true in terms of compilation due to the limited number of games he played but when he was on the field he produced.

I agree if he is able to learn to really diagnose the looks the D gives him. He has proven in college that he can get through his progressions fast, and didn’t take many sacks because of it.

If he is able to read these nfl defenses while still diagnosing the right read to go to like he did in college, he could be a major steal. Especially if his knees hold up.

The only thing that everyone is having trouble with including myself is figuring out what went wrong for him those few games before the conference championship.  He had like a 3 game stretch where his play wasn’t that good.

Eventually, he turned it around in his conference championship and against Texas but it’s still something I’d like to here others takes on and if I have time, go back and review the film myself.

He didn’t look great against Michigan, but that defense was really good.

I'm a Washington alum and watched all of their games, including the let down games you've mentioned. There really is no way to sugar coat that stretch of games where they struggled other than recognizing the PAC 12 was really good top to bottom this year.  The entire team was flat during that stretch and Penix wasn't able to overcome it.  I don't supposed we are going to criticize Rome Odunze or Bralen Trice for the let down, but Penix is going to get the heat because QB.  I get it, its a real criticism but one that is overblown.  He produced over and over against top competition and faced more top 20 teams than any of the other prospects, and went undefeated until the national championship game.

I think we saw the 'real' Penix his last two years at Washington.

The big question on him is, do you trust his twice-repaired ACL, and his repaired throwing shoulder, to hold up under NFL hits? I'm honestly more worried about him having a career-ending injury than with Daniels (who didn't miss a game due to injury in 2 years of getting knocked around by rampant NFL talent in the SEC).

Penix had some really good stretches' at Indiana, but you are not wrong.....the tape was limited due to the injuries.  In the end, it wasn't like he was lifting a lesser Indiana team like we saw with Lamar Jackson in Louisville or anything like that.  Ultimately, we have the injury concern and it can't be dismissed.

One thing to keep in mind on Daniels is let's not all bash him too hard.  Quinn said he was a game changer.  We don't need to talk ourselves out of him as a group bc then we'll be salty if he's the pick.  We're not in the interview room.  Who knows, maybe Peters told Daniels he's definitely going 2 (doubtful, but who knows) so he's like "neat, peace."

Agreed, the size/injury risk with him is legit but overblown.  Lets see what his pro day tells us.  All the same, I do think we are suffering from fatigue w/the QB prospects.  Maye has been a consensus top prospect for over a year and hasn't done anything to impair that.  We are picking these guys apart.

  9. A team is going to get a steal in Penix.  His physical attributes and on-field performance rival or exceed any of the other prospects.  He beat Caleb and Bo (twice) head to head.  If it weren't for the injury history, this discussion would look much different.  Notwithstanding, the injury concern is real even though his medicals checked out.  I've seen folks suggest he wasn't good when he was with Indiana, that is false.  He has always been a player and it really came to light when he went to Washington and had the supporting cast.  If we want to suggest his success at Washington was due to the surrounding talent, it is a fair critique given all QB prospects should be subject to that scrutiny.  All that aside, the reason he isn't in the discussion is the injury risk, otherwise he stacks up favorably with the rest of the prospects.

Interesting, I wasn't familiar with him until reading this post. Has racked up a lot or receptions 6'3" 248 is what the school lists him at. 4 years academic honors.

Westover was a fantastic player for the Huskies.  Even with all the great receiving talent on that team, Penix used Jack as a safety blanket and he came up big for them when then offense was in unfavorable circumstances.  One of my favorite players on my favorite team.  Good to see him get some attention here.

He didn’t play that well last season - which was his first at RT. I’d like to think he was could do better.

I guess he’s an upgrade on Wiley. But than so is a wheelie bin.

Per PFF, he definitely graded better in prior years when playing LT and might profile (for us) as a Leno replacement.  Either way, and like you said, he'd still be an upgrade on Wiley and give us some flexibility in the draft.  Absent chasing Onwenu (who you mentioned specifically), not a ton of other FA options and thus I'd be willing to throw $$ at the position to avoid entering the draft in dire need.  If we are going w/a rookie QB, it feels like a huge gamble to come out of FA without better alternatives than what we had last year.

This is crazy. We are going to go nuts in FA. Money will not be a factor in us getting the guys we are targeting. And hopefully players are going to be excited to come here for once.

Agreed.  If I were making the decisions (good that I'm not), I'd be willing to set the market for the available offensive linemen.  No way we want a rookie QB behind a questionable o-line.  Also don't want to be in the same position as last year during the draft where we desperately needed to draft OL, would much rather have flexibility at draft time.

I watched a bunch of tape on Daniels today. And while I get the fascination with his athleticism, it is Jackson level insane, his passing leaves a lot to be desired. He struggles with timing on a TON of routes. Especially in turning timing routes. I do like that he is willing to stand in the pocket and read the entire field before taking off. But even when he does that he misses wide open holes in the defense way too often. I am not seeing a top ten passer there. Now if you think he will grow from here so be it. I am not for drafting project QB's in the first round. I just am not.

    He is no Penix!

Thats what the Browns have been doing....keep swinging til you hit and they haven't come close to a franchise QB.

This is a great debate and no one is wrong, it's exactly the dilemma NFL teams face.

The NYG STILL think Daniel Jones is the answer!!!!!

Good analogies, except I don't think the Brown have kept swinging.  Perhaps the should have, although they are like Washington in that they've been just too good to be in draft slots necessary to upgrade.  Either way, the NYG are a perfect example of a team that should have consider the swing-away mentality.....at least in hind sight.  Maybe Jones beomes a reclamation project with success for the new staff, only time will tell.  But if you want to wait for time, you can also go ahead and kill the swing until you miiss appraoch.
