This issue as per the reporting is that Cowboys and Gregory had a deal and the Cowboys came back several times with changes AFTER they had an agreement. It was not him rejecting the initial terms. They had an agreement but then the Cowboys keep changing the terms. The Broncos made an offer and kept to it.  That is not dealing in good faith. That may turn out to not be true, but that's the way it was reported yesterday.

The updated reports say that he got mad about a clause saying the team has the option to reduce guaranteed cash if the league disciplines him.  He threw a fit about it and signed elsewhere without further discussion.  Funny part is, it is actually standard language in all Dallas contracts, not even specific to Gregory.  So, I kind of feel like the Cowboys dodged a bullet.  The guy is a head case.  One day he may play enough games in a season to beat his career best six sack season, but it won't be with Dallas.

Trying to make up for losing Gregory at the last second. Sounds like they had him but then kept "Nickle and diming him" after they agreed until they one too many changes. Sounds liek Bruce move.

I don't know the details, but my guess is that Dallas wanted some financial protection if he gets suspended again.  Not an unreasonable thing to ask for, seeing as Gregory has spent the majority of his career suspended.  He is a good pass rusher when he is on the field, and they will miss him.  However, there is a pretty good chance that they would have been missing him even if they had signed him, since the odds of him getting suspended again are probably above 50% based on his history.  At least this way, the Cowboys are not paying him and missing him at the same time.

It's Reacher.  Not highbrow stuff to begin with but the show is so much closer to my mental image from reading the books.

I never read the books, but I have read some reviews from people who did.  I find it awesome that they cast 5'7" Tom Cruise to play a character who is supposed to be 6'5" tall.  I don't remember the movie, but I have a mental image of the casting director of the movie going through tons of actors trying to find convincing bad guys that are all around 5'2" tall so that Cruise towers over them.

The movie was forgettable, but I thought the first season of Reacher was very well done.  I liked several of the characters, and the lead was really good.  Many of the events are highly unrealistic, but I was able to ignore that and really enjoy the show.

I think the comparison to Banshee is pretty good, though I liked Reacher more.  There was an unrealistic sexual aspect in Banshee that I was not able to ignore.  In Banshee, anytime an attractive women would show up in town, they would sleep with the lead character within the first 45 minutes they met him.  If I remember correctly, there was even a woman that ambushed him in his room, but when she had the chance to kill the dude... she decided to have sex with him instead. It was a bit over the top, but I enjoyed the overall show.

I was thinking of that as a contender. Another one might be Mike Ditka trading his entire draft to the Redskins for the right to draft RIcky Williams.

It makes me think about how different the league is now compared to back then.  Before the Herschel trade, the most recent blockbuster trade was Eric Dickerson for 3 firsts and 3 seconds.  All these guys were running backs.  Now you get laughed at for taking a rb in the top 5.

Though, I do think the trade by Ditka to draft Ricky Williams is not as huge as it seems.  An entire years worth of picks sounds like a lot, but picks in rounds three through seven combined are not worth as much as an extra first round pick.

Boy Wentz has been involved in a lot of trades. I wonder if he's the record holder for most picks exchanged? I count 8. Nine if you consider the swap of seconds countable.

    Wentz trade history:

Eagles traded for the ability to draft Wentz. Eagles gave up The No. 8 pick in 2016, the No. 77 pick (third round) in 2016, the No. 100 pick (fourth round) in 2016, a 2017 first-rounder and a 2018 second-rounder.

Then, the Eagles received a first round pick from the Colts for their one year rental.

Then, the Colts got swapped 2nd rounder, a third rounder and a conditional third rounder.

Dallas got 8 draft picks (including 3 firsts and 3 seconds)..) as well as 4 players for Herschel Walker.  The first player they drafted with those picks was Emmitt Smith... a much better player.  I still smile about this, and Herschel was my favorite player in the NFL at the time.

  6. I had a random thought... about football ethics, so I figured this is the place to ask.

Jerry Jones has been expressing frustration with Amari Cooper for the last couple months.  There is speculation that Cooper may be cut or traded this offseason.  I remember when Cooper was a free agent that Washington made an offer to him, but he re-signed with Dallas instead. At th time, he made some comment about him deciding to take less money to stay in Dallas.

    My hypothetical ethics question:

If Amari acually took less money to stay in Dallas... Would it be ethical for Dallas to decide to move on from him and later trade him to Washington (assuming he didn't want to be traded)?

Drew Brees was average at BEST when he was at San Diego, on top of that had a labrum surgery before going to the saints. Yes Brees is amazing but i think Payton had a lot to do with his success early on, I honestly do not trust the current regime to solve our mediocrity issues/ qb issues.

I think Payton has a great eye for QBs.  He took the Saints job and tried to get Jerry Jones to let him take Romo with him in a trade.  Jerry said no, even though Romo was a backup (not even 2nd string in his first couple seasons) that had never thrown an NFL pass.  When that fell through, he went and got Brees in free agency.  For a coach taking over a team without a QB, it is pretty impressive for him to have those guys as his primary offseason targets (as neither of them were considered likely to have great careers at the time).

I would trust him to find the right QB.  However, I can't really understand his Taysom Hill infatuation.

I understand being happy with the blowout of both rivals. If that had been reversed us fans would be thrilled. The fact is that it was against our team which was on 4 days rest and had so many roster changes over the previous two weeks we could barely field a team much less gameplan.  Philly rested starters plus had a covid outbreak to deal with as well. Dalass knew they had the advantage and gameplanned with hurry up offense to really push the dagger in deep on undermanned teams.  Credit to them for winning those games while scoring a ton of points. Realistically their offense could have stayed in and ran it up to 70 points if they chose to.  Atleast vs WFT, I didn't watch the Eagles game.

The playoff game was just a reality check against a team who was ready to play without having a ton of roster shuffle ahead of the game. I don't believe Jimmy G is going to outshine Rogers but he managed to outshine Dak. Both QBs threw very errant picks and the 49ers pressure on Dak for a majority of the game.  At the end of the day all of our division is watching the playoffs after the first round, again.

In other news Dak needs to revisit his comments encouraging fans to throw things at officials. He just can't say things like that, but I guess since McCarthy did it that it makes it okay. Players have been fined or worse for less.

It is really hard for me to get too disappointed with Dallas, as I never have any expectations of them.  I realize every season that they are going to have a roughly 1 in 30 chance of winning the SuperBowl.  It is very possible that they will not win one again in my lifetime.  I try to distance myself from any expectation, and watch more as an observer.  So, looking at Vegas odds, Dallas was never in the top  3 or 4 teams as contender to win a championship during any point in the 2nd half of the year.  So, I thought they a 50-60% chance of winning their initial playoff game, but winning a few in a row was highly unlikely.

As for the season as a whole, it was very fun.  I judge that by how much I enjoyed watching them during the season, not what the final outcome of the season was.  Ironically, the last time Dallas won the Super Bowl (1995), I did not enjoy the season as the team tended to play down to their competition throughout that year.

I know the results of those blowouts were not an indication of Dallas being great, but they were enjoyable to see.  It is fun to watch them go 6-0 in the division.  Really fun watching the 1st round pick rack up sacks and make all-pro.  Watching Diggs come out of nowhere to get all those picks was cool.  The offense was very inconsistent, but ended up #1 in yards and scoring... that is fun no matter what.  So, I hope I do get to see Dallas win a Super Bowl again.  But, I can enjoy a good regular season, like this one, even if it doesn't result in a championship.

  9. It is a weird perspective hearing how people feel that Dallas is expected to be good by fans and media.  When I read Cowboys fans' perspectives of the expectations of Dallas, I tend to see 20 people arguing that they are not real contenders for every one fan that thinks they might win it all.  If a rival fan talks about how much they suck, you tend to get a response defending the team.  If a fan of the team expresses doubt... they get a ton of agreement.  I don't know any fan that thought Dallas was likely to win the Super Bowl.

3 wins against teams over .500.  They blew out Washington and Philly, who were depleted by Covid.  Had Washington and Philly been at full strength, I doubt they blow them out.  That was the only reason they led the league in scoring.  As far as long shots for the SB, every year the media picks them to go far in the playoffs.  I wouldn't call that being long shots.

The "media" talks about Dallas because talking about Dallas is what gets raitings.  When Dallas wins, the media talks them up...  and acknowledge that the Cowboys will probably lose in the playoffs. When they lose, the media talks about how funny it is that they always lose.  There is no version of sports "media" that will ignore Dallas.  Think about how much you enjoy watching people discussing a Cowboys loss... and how wrong people were who thought the Cowboys were a contender.

It was a pretty fun season no matter how you slice it.  If Washington swept the NFC with historical blowouts against the Cowboys and Eagles, while also having a rookie racking up 13 sacks on the way to a1st team all-pro selection... would you be saddened if I pointed out they only had a few wins against teams with records over .500?  I am guessing that you would still feel that it was fun to watch.

  11. I didn’t have much hope for this season, but it ended up being much better than I expected.  Watching Parsons and Diggs was a lot of fun.  I had no hope for the D, but they really ended up being the most fun D to watch in more than a decade.  Add to that Dallas having the #1 offense for both scoring and yards.  An 11 win season with a sweep of the NFC East.  The biggest blowout in the history of Dallas-Washington followed by a blowout vs the Eagles where Dallas scored 50+ again  (most points by Dallas vs Philly in my lifetime (I'm in my late 40s).  Dallas averaging 40 points per game against the NFC East... I'll take that again next year if I can.  They were always long-shots for a SB, but it has been awhile since I had this much fun watching them.

Don't they have a Trio of productive rushers behind him ?

They have a rb with 750 yards, and two with around 400.  All average 4.3 or better, with their best back, Sanders, average at 5.5ypc.  All are pretty good RBs.  Hurts leading the team in rushing is what makes them #1.  But they have a very good running game without Hurts.

  13. I had very little interest in the Dallas -Philly game since the division is wrapped up, and both teams are already in the playoffs.  I was hoping that Parsons and Diggs could pad some stats... but neither are playing, so that is out the window.  I was also hoping Zeke would get some rest and Pollard would get to be the feature back... but Pollard is out too.  Now, about the only players who will be playing are veterans who don't need the experience (or the wear and tear) from a fairly meaningless game.

I would like to see Dallas get the rare NFC East sweep, but other than that, this feels like an exhibition game.

I don't think the NFL has seen this level of tank the Giants are doing.  That last game was straight up thrown from opening bell.

I agree.  I'm fine with sitting vets and playing young guys who need experience once a team is eliminated.  But the Giants never made an effort to catch up.  It was strange watching them start trying to run out the clock for 4 quarters, while losing.

Yeah they right now by a mile are the worst team in the NFL.  the only thing I like about their meltdown is I am hoping it convinces them that Daniel Jones is the answer.  They were bad with Jones.  But they look epic bad without him.   Shows the power of a backup QB, too. they were much better with Colt McCoy.  With Glennon and Fromm they look like a high school level team.

The fans were also so excited to see how much better their offense would be after Garrett was fired.  It got so much worse, especially with Jones out.

  15. I'm again rooting for WFT over Philly, but my guess is that Philly will take this game.  I kind of expect Washington to just go through the motions on these last two games.  Washington had some momentum after their win streak, but then covid derailed their team right before playing their two most important division games of the year.  Add on the fatal car crash, drama related to the Payne/Allen spat, Sweat's brother being killed, etc... I wonder if everyone in Washington just wants to be done for the season.

    My guess:

    Philly 23

    WFT: 17

One of my favorite Madden clips.  Just talking about Larry Allen run blocking play after play, with Summerall adding his 2 cents occasionally.

Madden: "I always say he is the best lineman in football, but when I say that, the pundits say... is that the word... the pundits..."

    Summerall: "That Is a word".

The Madden part starts at about 30 seconds in... just classic Madden focusing on a guard for a whole drive.

What irritates me the most, is the media is only talking about the whupping we got. They don't mention the short week, they don't mention the injuries, they don't mention the covid outbreak. They just want to crown Dallas the best team ever, going to the SB because they beat an already beat down team. Who cares if they got one of the easiest schedules? I seriously, can't wait until they get destroyed in the playoffs.

I understand the frustration about Dallas hype following a game situation that clearly had the WFT playing at a disadvantage (with so many players out, and having to play on the road with no time to prepare).  It was a situation that didn't give Washington much of a chance to succeed.

I see the sentiment of "I can't wait until they get beat in the playoffs" from so many NFC East fans.  Good news is, only one team will win the Super Bowl.  So it is very unlikely that Dallas will be that team.  Then, you will get to see "the media" all laugh about how Dallas is pathetic and how predictable it was that they would fail in the playoffs.

If Dallas did happen to win it all, you can at least be happy for me!  I can be happy for the fans of any team that wins it all after a quarter of a century or more without a championship.  Except Eagles fans obviously.

  18. I watched the final episode of WOT season one last night.  I was thoroughly underwhelmed.  I liked the beginning of the season, but it never seemed to come together.  I am keeping my fingers crossed that the first season was an anomaly due to covid shutdowns and the Matt actor throwing a wrench into everything.  If what we have seen so far is what the show runners were trying to do... I hope Amazon just sells the story and some other studio reboots the whole thing.
