Redskins Sign Nose Tackle Jerrell Powe

Recommended Posts

camp fodder or a serious candidate to become the backup nose tackle and short yardage D. Lineman??? This is a strange signing after bringing in Pot Roast, Paea, and Ricky Jean since we already have Hatcher, Baker, Kearse, and Kedric Golston.... and the just drafted Preston Smith, along with Robert Thomas, Nose tackle, who was on the practice squad last year. Just very curious what they intend to with so many D. Linemen. Some people WILL be cut.

So far, every camp body signed you have the same response - wow this guy has no chance why would we sign him. Makes no sense.

It's becoming clear you may just not understand how the offseason and specifically TC works - Each team gets 90 players on their team. But during the regular season we only get 53 on the regular roster with an additional 10 on the PS (I believe that's the new total it may still be 8).

So with a little math 90 minus (53 plus 10) = 27.  This means that 27 GUYS MUST BE CUT! So yes, people will be cut!  You bring these guys in for several reasons:

1. To provide camp bodies. These are guys whose sole purpose in life is to get beat on during practices to keep the stars and starters from taking an undue punishment. Most WILL NEVER MAKE THE TEAM! They know it, the team knows and I thought all the fans knew it.

2. To provide depth. Every once in a while there is a guy who finds his game and finds his stride and he actually makes the team.

3. To provide injury depth. Many of these players stay on a short list of "in case of emergency". For example, if we have 5 guys at RB go down, one of the guys we cut might be able to come in an produce right away since they went through training camp with the team. They know the plays the call's etc.

I just don't understand why this seems to be such a hard concept.  There are 31 other teams looking for players to round out their 90 man roster. Guess what, 31 other team cut at least 27 of those players. It happens every year just like clockwork!
