IF Brunell retires, would it change the salary cap issue?

let's just say for some reason he does retire at the end of this year, or the year after that. When a player retires, does it free up the team from his contract? Do we get relief from the salary cap? Just wondering....

i know if you cut a player, you have to pay him, and the salary cap takes a big hit, but isn't it different if a player choses to retire and walk away???

What happens if a player is traded or retires?

Answer: We already know that if a player is waived on or before June 1, the remaining signing bonus that has not been included in salary “accelerates” and is included in that year’s team salary. Acceleration also occurs when a player is traded or waived and picked up by another team. The new team is not responsible for any of the original signing bonus. The team that waived or traded the player is responsible for the accelerated signing bonus (in the same manner as described above).

In most cases, if a player retires, the remaining signing bonus that has not been included in salary “accelerates” and is included in that year’s team salary. Thus, the team will take an immediate salary cap hit of the remaining signing bonus. ( this is why the Dion thing was sucked so much before we got some bonus back)

I did a break down on another post a while back about why Brunell was such a bad pick up. The thread is , We are paying the price ". Basically we are stuck with him for a few years. Average salary over 4 years is 5 mil a year. Here is part of the post from Oct 15th.

If he only last 2 yrs.

1st year 9.4 bonus/7 yrs = 1.3mil prorated bonus+767K sal =2M

2nd Year: 1.3+2.7 salary =4 Mil ( for a back up ? ) then if he is cut

3rd yr dead weight money 9.4-2.6=6.8Mil dead money or if he is waived after June 1st

3rd yr 1.3M

4th yr 5.4 M

( after reading the commish, I think this number is done 50-50 so it would be 3.35 and 3.35M

Summary of his contract.

Brunell will be paid about $9.4 million this year with $767,000 in base salary on top of his $8.6 signing bonus. He'll get $2 million more in 2005 to boost his two-year total to about $11.4 million, and he'll get $4 million in 2006 and $5.2 million in $2007, making it a four-year deal for about $20.6 million. However, three more years were included for salary cap purposes
