Laptop virus deletion.....

pga

Recommended Posts

When I run my virusscan and it comes up with a virus I usually delete it. But some of them say it can't be deleted and that it may be "write protected" and won't let me delete them. I have tried looking at McAfee's site and they tell me to delete thru some "dat" or "engine" thing that I don't know anything about. When I search for the infected files it says it can't find them.

I run Windows 2000 Professional on a Vaio laptop.

Anybody with any advice?

It would be greatly appreciated.

Thanx

You could try deleting them from MS-DOS mode.

First write down the names of the files, inculding the extention, ie: filename.htm

Then find out where your Quarrantine folder is located on your hard drive using windows explorer and write it down exactly.

I use Norton Antivirus and the the path to the quarrantine folder looks like this:

C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\Quarantine\incoming

Then restart your computer in MS-DOS mode by repeatedly hitting the F8 key while the system is coming up.

Then change the directory to the one where the quarrantine files are located.

At the prompt.

C:\windows

Type cd.. (C D period period) then enter.

The prompt should be:

C:\

Then type for example:

CD Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\Quarantine\incoming

then enter. The prompt should look like

c:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\Quarantine\incoming

then type:

del filename.htm

then enter.

It should say "one file deleted"

Repeat for all the files.
