Lavar Due to Get $3 million escalator

From Jody Foldesy of the Times . . . Foldesy is usually pretty much on the up and up . . . but Jody seems to have fallen the way of Dan Daly on this one . . .

This is the problem . . .

Limiting the Houston Texans to 166 yards in Sunday's 26-10 win boosted the Redskins to No.6 in the NFL's total defense rankings, a move that could prove very costly when escalators and incentives are tallied before the 2003 league starts in early March.

Linebacker LaVar Arrington now is in line to trigger a clause that rewards him with, among other things, a $3million escalator to his 2003 base salary, sources familiar with the contract said.

That means Washington would have $3million less to spend against the cap; already the club is projected to be only about $1million below the $73.9 million limit, though it is expected to cut running back Stephen Davis and save $5.2million of space.

Bottom line: A team that doesn't have a lot of projected cap space now looks like it will have even less, further crimping its ability to pursue major free agents.

Problem? Not really.

You can simply convert $3 million escalator to bonus money and give Lavar upfront what he'd making in 2003. If so, because his contract is good till 2006 (with a voidable last year), the cap hit would be $750 K for each year of the contract. That's more than livable.

3 mil is still a huge bonus that if I understand correctly will count against this off-season's cap unless/until the restructure with Arrington, which does make sense, but if he is going to keep invoking these incentives, and I hope he does, sooner or later its going to catch up with the team. Maybe its better to just absorb it all this year, try and use remaining cap space to either re-sign Gardener or get a FA WR, but not both, and then fill holes with vet bargains...hopefully more like Gardener and Armstead and less like Kip Vickers and Rod Jones.
