Direct Connect proposal

Perhaps most of you aren't familiar with Direct Connect. It's a peer-to-peer file sharing program, much like Kazaa and Limewire. Except that it's quite different. :D

Direct Connect works with "hubs". Hubs can be considered public/private rooms where access can be restricted as desired, so that files on a member's computer can only be accessed by other members of that hub. It's become quite popular for serious file traders looking for high quality and specialized product.

Again, this is a peer-to-peer program, which means that we don't need to set up a server that has a ton of bandwidth. All file trading is done between users, which means that the server isn't responsible for any of the content being transferred.

All the server needs to do is maintain the "access" list and "chat room" associated with the hub. And for that, all we need is a computer with a fixed IP address and some reasonable amount of bandwidth.

Along with serving as an area in which perhaps members might want to trade digitized versions of old classic skins games, any other files of interest to the forum members can be traded as well.

The beauty to the peer-to-peer model is that once a game/file starts to propagate, there are numerous sources to retrieve the file from, reducing the bandwidth burden on the original source of the file.

The handy bonus is that the chat functionality, while not advanced, works quite solidly, and could serve nicely as a gameday live chat room.

Anyone interested in getting involved with this?

Grab the client, take a look at some of the public hubs if you like, etc.
