Some will tell you that the Redskins have too many coaches doing too many things to get anything accomplished. Sunday at Fed Ex field however, at the games most critical juncture, the problem was too many players. Facing third down and goal at the three yard line, Washington was whistled for "12 men in the huddle." After a sack on the next play, the Redskins had managed to lose 14 yards after sitting just three from a go ahead touchdown late in the fourth quarter. Ladell Betts never touched the ball. The aforementioned series- which coincidentally was the last time the Redskins would possess the ball this season with any mathematical hopes of reaching the playoffs- was a microcosm of the Skins' year. Inept play calling, poor execution, costly penalties, and abysmal game management have thoroughly sunk a season filled with high hopes and great expectations. To be eliminated from the NFC wildcard hunt with three games remaining is more than sad. The "JV" conference is so bad that the NFL may soon need to institute a policy similar to the NCAA where a minimum number of victories is required for post season eligibility. The offense is no better off this year with guru Al Saunders than it was last year with Gibbs calling the plays and defenses triple teaming Santana Moss. Is Jimmy Farris still available? Oh if only the games were played on paper. The coaching situation is a mess. Pretty soon there is going to be a coach for each individual player (and theyll probably all hold separate meetings too.) Bringing in a bunch of high profile free agents doesn't translate to winning on the field, neither does bringing in a bunch of high profile coaches. Head coaches, assistant head coaches, assistant coordinators who double as assistant head coaches. Its all enough to make your head spin. Unless Joe Gibbs can convince the NFL to extend the play clock to well over a minute, things need to get simplifed in a hurry. The Redskins need to spend this off season stripping down instead of loading up. They need to build chemistry and realize that Championships are won in early February, not a month later.
