Suspect in custody; he was armed with multiple weapons, TV station says

Updated: 6 minutes ago

CAZENOVIA, Wis. - A student walked into a rural school with a gun and shot the principal several times, authorities said. A suspect was taken into custody and all the children were reported safe.

Principal John Klang’s condition was not immediately known, Sauk County sheriff’s Capt. Michael Haifemann said.

The student walked into the school at about 8 a.m. and shots were fired as people tried to get him under control, Melissa Nigh, dean of students at Weston School, said in an interview broadcast on MSNBC.

The K-12 school was locked down Friday morning, officials said.

“All the children in the school were safe and none were harmed,” Haifemann said.

Cazenovia is a community of about 300 people about 60 miles northwest of Madison.

The principal was apparently shot several times, Haifemann said.

Local TV station WKOW-TV said the suspect was a former student armed with multiple weapons.

School district officials told NBC News affiliate WMTV the Weston School principal was flown to a hospital for treatment.

The campus also encompasses a middle school.

On Wednesday, a gunman took six girls hostage in a Colorado high school classroom, sexually assaulting some before killing one and taking his own life.
