JA's got my vote, if it doesnt cost us a 1st rounder...

John Abraham | DEs5042.jpgFull Name: John Abraham

Born: May 6, 1978Timmonsville, SC

Height: 6-4

Weight: 258 lbs.

Insider Analysis in.gifGrade84Expert's TakeAbraham, designated the Jets' franchise player, has marginal size to play the defensive end position, lacking the ideal height you would like to have. He is an excellent athlete and shows the versatility to line up and play the outside linebacker position, although we feel he is better suited to try to add some bulk and strength and play with his hand down. He has an explosive get-off and outstanding speed to the corner. He has a great speed rush and shows that once he has the offensive tackle taking a deep set, he can take advantage by using a counter move inside and being very successful. He has great body control and change of direction skills, and he re directs to the ball very well. He plays with great instinct and has great anticipation. He does an outstanding job of maintaining leverage and using his hands to get separation from blockers, and he is able to sustain the line of scrimmage in spite of his lack of ideal size. He has the range to make plays from sideline to sideline, and he shows that he has great closing speed to the quarterback. He can be neutralized if an offensive lineman is able to front him up and deliver a good punch, and he tends to rely on his speed rush too much. He needs to develop a better array of pass-rush techniques. He is an excellent athlete, but he struggles a little as an outside linebacker with the movement required in pass defense. He gets good depth in his zone drops, but he is somewhat of a liability in man-to-man coverage. If he feels he is out of a play, he tends to stop and not finish a play. He needs to get out of the habit of watching on plays away, however he generally plays hard and gives a consistent effort.

Darren Howard | DEs5062.jpgFull Name: Darren Howard

Born: November 19, 1976St. Petersburg, FL

Height: 6-3

Weight: 275 lbs.

Insider Analysis in.gifGrade79Expert's TakeHoward has excellent combination of athletic ability, speed and quickness. He plays with reckless abandon and will make plays from sideline to sideline. He is relentless in pursuit. He has excellent change-of-direction skills, agility and balance. He uses his hands and is very effective slipping and shedding blocks. He has good recognition skills, good closing speed and does a great job down the line avoiding the traffic. When he plays with leverage, he is very good at anchoring the point of attack. As a pass rusher, he is outstanding. He is a speed rusher who is disruptive, and he makes plays. He has a quick and explosive first step and a good variety of pass-rush moves. He does a good job of setting up offensive linemen. He has a good spin and swim move. He does a good job of getting his hands up and will bat down passes at the line of scrimmage. However, Howard lacks good upper-body strength, and when he does not play with good leverage, he will get overpowered at the point of attack. He is too high, does not play with a good base and struggles against double-team blocks. He is not effective when he has to play inside as a defensive tackle. He is more effective when he is in space. He has good speed off the edge but not ideal speed for an edge rusher. He is a lot quicker than he is fast. He will get manhandled and engulfed by bigger and quicker offensive tackles at times. Overall, Howard is a productive player when healthy. He is a playmaker who can be a dominant edge rusher. He needs to improve his technique vs. the run.

Robert Mathis | DEs6474.jpgFull Name: Robert Nathan Mathis

Born: February 26, 1981Atlanta, GA

Height: 6-2

Weight: 235 lbs.

Insider Analysis in.gifGrade76Expert's TakeMathis is somewhat undersized to play defensive end, but he plays much bigger than his actual physical size. He has outstanding foot quickness and an explosive get-off. He can beat you with his speed off the ball and has a great chance to beat you to the corner. He has excellent body control and change-of-direction skills, and he redirects to the ball very well. He shows he can be a disruptive force in the backfield and is always pushing upfield. He has a good variety of pass rush moves, including an excellent and productive spin move. He is a pass-rush specialist who plays with a high level of energy and shows up downfield in chase. He is very quick in the execution of line stunts. His game is based upon movement. He lacks the bulk and strength to be able to hold up in the run game, and if he gets held at the line of scrimmage he has a difficult time getting off a block. He uses his hands very well in pass rush, however he has trouble trying to disengage to go to the ball. He needs to become more consistent in his play recognition, and he needs to add bulk and strength without losing any quickness.

Ryan Denney | DEs5947.jpgFull Name: Ryan Craig Denney

Born: June 15, 1977Denver, CO

Height: 6-7

Weight: 275 lbs.

Insider Analysis in.gifGrade69Expert's TakeDenney has edge speed and a consistent get-off. He has great size and very good upper-body strength. He can accelerate and close on quarterbacks. He works hard with his hands to disengage from blocks on the pass rush. He is a bit of a long strider but runs well. His recognition skills are solid, and he seldom is out of position. He is tough and plays with good leverage, especially for his height. He is a strong tackler who can uncoil and club up with his arms. He sometimes plays with a narrow base, loses his balance and gets off his feet. He lacks initial foot quickness and ideal change-of-direction skills. His body control isn't great. He can lose his leverage and is vulnerable to the double team. He plays hard, but his effort to finish plays is inconsistent. He effectively uses several pass-rush techniques but needs to develop more explosiveness and a better sense of timing.

Demetric Evans | DEs5710.jpgFull Name: Demetric Untrel Evans

Born: September 3, 1979Haynesville, LA

Height: 6-3

Weight: 285 lbs.

Insider Analysis in.gifGrade56Expert's TakeEvans is an undersize defensive end who has average athletic ability, speed and quickness. He has decent upper strength and initial quickness off the ball. He will flash leverage and uses of hands at times. However, Evans lacks good explosion and suddenness off the ball. He plays too high; he has a narrow base and he has very average change of direction skills. He has poor use of hands, he can not disengage and he lets blockers get into his body. He lacks lower body strength to hold the point of attack when teams run at him. He does not have down the line closing speed and he has a difficulty, at times, locating the ball. He lacks good foot quickness and he is a step slow from making plays. As a pass rusher, he does not have edge rushing ability. He lacks the speed to turn the corner. He does not have a variety of pass rush moves. He is a bull rusher who gets engulfed by bigger and stronger offensive lineman. Overall, Evans is a try hard guy. He has an excellent work ethic but he does not have the specifics you are looking for at the position. He does not have a lot of upside to him and he is not special.

Kampman is off the market, he re-signed with the Pack. Weaver and Price are also gone.

Personally, I like Robert Mathis as a rotational DE. He has a lot of speed and can produce sacks (the downside being he is incredibly small). Unfortunately he's an RFA and would be difficult to steal away from the Colts.

My personal sleeper pick:

Carlos Hall | DEs6099.jpgFull Name: Carlos DeShaun Hall

Born: January 16, 1979Marianna, AR

Height: 6-4

Weight: 259 lbs.

Insider Analysis in.gifGrade67Expert's TakeHall is an undersize DE who plays with a lot of aggressiveness and a non stop motor. He has good overall athletic ability, initial quickness and speed. He has good agility, balance and change of direction skills. He is a good edge rusher who has a good explosive first step. He has the speed to chase and make plays from behind and he best when he is on the move. He is more effective as a pass rusher than he is a run stopper. He does not have the overall size and bulk to consistently hold the point of attack. He lacks good technique, he plays to high and he does not use his hand to shed blockers. Teams will seek him out on run downs and wear him down. He is better coming off the bench as pass rusher than being an every down player. He has the ability to turn the corner and make tackles readjust and he does a good job on his line stunts. He needs to improve his pass rush moves. He lacks a variety of moves and he has a lot of wasted motion when trying to make counter moves. He will get engulfed at times by bigger OT's and gets physically handled and put on the ground. Overall, Hall is an adequate starter but he is better as a backup where he can be rested and come in on passing downs. He is a good overall player who is still young and he can make a contribution on situation downs.

Thank you randythesofine.

Personally I think Evans is far better than the review given for him. If given the opportunity I expect him to flourish and beome a very above average player.

That being said, I would like to see Abraham in a Redskin uniform because it would alleviate alot of the pressure on our LBs to get to the QB.

PS- I have no idea how they are able to refer to Evans (285 lbs) as undersized and then not use the same comment for the likes of Hall, Abraham, and particularly Mathis. Last time I checked, size was a very quantitative measure and 285 lbs qualified as having size. Evans filled in at DT last year.

Wow, no one picked Kalimba? Dude has a serious motor, is young and has been a bright spot on an otherwise sloppy defense. Detroit would be idiotic to let him go -- he's my 2nd highest rated DE FOR US behind Howard (I think Abe would be a huge mistake).

KE wouldn't be an every down DE, but he'd be unbelievable in the rotation. Watch our sack totals increase by 20 with him in the mix.

My guess is that he'll re-sign with Detroit though.

Kalimba Edwards | DEs5921.jpgFull Name: Kalimba Edwards

Born: December 26, 1979East Point, GA

Height: 6-6

Weight: 265 lbs.

Insider Analysis in.gifGrade69Expert's TakeEdwards has a good combination of athletic ability, speed and quickness. He has excellent agility, balance and initial quickness. He has good change of direction skills and is a fluid athlete with a non-stop motor. He is a speed rushing DE. He does not have a lot of bulk and looks a little undersized, but he makes up for it with his speed and quickness. He has good overall strength and did a decent job of anchoring the point of attack. He takes good angles to the ball, has good closing speed and has the capability to make plays from sideline to sideline. Although he has improved his ability to anchor the point and uses his hands well, he still has problems getting off blocks. He gets too high at times, does not get good leverage and will get knocked off the ball. He does not have the bulk and lower body strength to hold up. He is most effective as an outside edge rusher. He has an explosive first step, good closing speed to the QB and is a disruptive pass rusher. He has a good variety of pass rush moves and has the ability to make OTs redirect with double moves. The problem with Edwards is he is undersized and will get engulfed or knocked out of his pass rush lane by bigger OTs. He is not very disciplined, will play out of control and will run around blocks and lose gap integrity. Overall, Edwards has the athletic ability, speed and quickness to be a starter in this league. He needs to improve his overall recognition skills and technique. He has the ability to be a playmaker but is an underachiever at this time.
