(7:30 PM): Breaking news: Texans get top pick... In the end all the mathematical machinations were academic as Houston lost 20-17 in overtime to San Francisco to wrap up the #1 pick at the 2006 draft. New Oleans, which lost to Tampa Bay will have the 2nd pick, while Tennessee will pick 3rd, the Jets 4th, Green Bay 5th, San Francisco 6th and Oakland 7th. We'll have the full, updated first-round selection order for the 2006 draft after tonight's game between Dallas and St. Louis which will complete the regular schedule.

(4:00 PM): Top pick down to final two... As expected, who gets the #1 pick at the 2006 will come down to the Houston-San Francisco game which just kicked off. If Houston loses to the 49ers then the Texans will get the top pick this year; a win by the Texans, though, and the New Orleans Saints would get the top pick. In that scenario, the Saints, Texans and 49ers would all be tied with 3-13 records but New Orleans will have played the weakest schedule of the three teams. While there are still several games to be played, its possible to calculate that Saints opponents will win 133 games this season with one game to be decided, while Houston's opponents will have won 136, also with one game to be figured in; and ironically. Meanwhile, the 49ers opponents will have won 137 games with three games still to be factored in. Earlier today, both the New York Jets and Green Bay played themsleves out of contention for the top pick when they won their final games. The Jets knocked off Buffalo when rookie CB Justin Miller, a second round pick at the 2005 darft, returned a punt 95 yards for the winning TD, while the Packers upset playoff bound Seattle.

(Noon ET): Top junior DE headed to draft… North Carolina State DE Mario Williams said Saturday after the Wolfpack’s bowl win over South Florida that he will likely leave school early and enter the NFL draft. Williams indicated that he will make a formal announcement next week. The 6-6, 285 Williams has a chance to be the first defensive player off the board at the 2006 draft.

Report: Canes junior KR on way to pros… Miami junior KR Devin Hester is denying a local report that said he will forgo his senior season to enter the 2006 NFL draft. Hester will reportedly announce his decision early next week, although he says he has not yet made up his mind and still has not heard from the NFL’s draft advisory committee. Earlier it had been reported that Hester was likely to return to school next fall, in large part to find a position. Hester was originally a CB, but was switched to WR for the Hurricanes’ bowl date with LSU last Friday. Against the Tigers, LSU, Hester gained 28 yards on seven carries and caught two passes for 40 yards early on, but was largely ignored as the game progressed as Miami was hammered 40-3.

Police looking for former pick Clarett… The Associated Press is reporting that former Ohio State RB Maurice Clarett has been accused of using a gun to rob two people in an alley behind a bar early Sunday and taking a cell phone. Clarett reportedly fled the scene when the bar owner or manager, who knew Clarett and the victims, came into the alley and identified him. Clarett is wanted on two counts of suspicion of aggravated robbery, police said. Clarett was a surprise 3rd round pick by Denver at the 2006 draft, but was released prior to the start of the season. That, of course, was only a part of Clarett’s draft story; Clarett sued the NFL for entry to the 2004 draft after he was suspended by the school for an incident in which he was charged with misdemeanor falsification for filing a police report claiming that more than $10,000 in clothing, CDs, cash and stereo equipment was stolen from a car he borrowed from a local dealership. He later pleaded guilty to a lesser charge. Clarett originally was allowed to enter that draft despite the fact that he had not been in school for three years as mandated by a league rule, however, just days before the draft an appeals court overturned that decision. As a result, Clarett, along with former USC, and current Detroit WR Mike Williams who also had taken advantage of the original decision to apply for the 2004 draft, had no place to play that fall.
