Michael Vale, who appeared in Dunkin' Donuts commercials for 15 years, died Saturday of complications from diabetes. From 1982 to 1997, television viewers came to know Vale as "Fred the Baker" in a series of ads for Dunkin' Donuts. Poor Fred could never get enough sleep because he always had to get up so early to bake fresh doughnuts. Massachusetts-based Dunkin' Donuts released a statement calling Vale "a beloved American icon that permeated our culture and touched millions with his sense of humor and humble nature." Vale made hundreds of other commercials and was also a veteran of the Broadway stage, film and television. He was 83.
