Blade
US MARINE CORPS RESERVE TO COLLECT TOYS FOR NEEDY FAMILIES AT FEDEXFIELD ON SUNDAY, DECEMBER 18 Ashburn, VA - On Sunday, December 18, starting at 2:00 pm. The United States Marine Corps Reserves will collect toys for the 2005 Toys for Tots Campaign at FedExField before the Washington Redskins take on the Dallas Cowboys at 4:15 p.m. Marines will be stationed at all of the entrance gates to FedExField with several large boxes to collect new and unwrapped toys for the upcoming holiday season. All the toys collected will be distributed to thousands of needy children in the National Capitol Area for the holiday season. All fans are encouraged to bring a new, unwrapped toy to the game on Sunday, December 18. Toys for Tots began in 1947 when Major Bill Hendricks, USMCR and a group of Marine Reservists in Los Angeles, California collected and distributed 5,000 toys to needy children. The 1947 campaign was so successful that the Marine Corps adopted Toys for Tots in 1948 and expanded it into a nationwide campaign. Since then, Marines have conducted successful nationwide campaigns during the holidays every year since 1948. The mission of the Toys for Tots program today is to "bring the joy of Christmas to America's needy children."
