Security tight for Chargers-Raiders game tomorrow

More cops, guards will be on the job

Additional security measures will be in force for tomorrow's Chargers-Raiders National Football League game at Qualcomm Stadium to head off fan rowdiness that has been a problem in the past.

An increased number of police and uniformed private security guards will be stationed at all gates, and fans entering the stadium will be subject to pat-down searches and inspection of personal bags.

"Fans refusing the searches will not be allowed to enter the stadium," San Diego police Lt. Michael Cash said.

Sales of alcohol inside the stadium will halt at the end of halftime. People buying alcoholic beverages at the game will be limited to one drink per order.

During the past three years, police and the Chargers have imposed similar measures at Raiders games, and that has reduced violent incidents, Cash said. It has made "for a safer family environment for fans and employees," he said.

Authorities said the increased security has no link to the elevated national terror alert level. Police officials said, however, that officers would be ready for anything unusual.

Chargers-Raiders games have been marred over the years by rowdy crowds and liquor-fueled trouble.

For example, a La Mesa man was stabbed at the 2000 game. A Norwalk man who was seen on videotape stabbing the Chargers fan was sentenced to five years in prison.

Arrests are usually higher for Chargers-Raiders games than for most others.

At the Chargers-Raiders game at Qualcomm in 2001, police arrested or cited 102 people, nearly five times as many as they had taken into custody for the game against the Denver Broncos a week earlier.

Last December, with the help of new, high-powered cameras, police arrested 69 people, took 33 to detox and cited 38 for misdemeanors. Among those arrested was a San Diego sheriff's deputy on suspicion of assaulting a security guard.

The games, however, do not have a monopoly on unruly fans.

A 22-year-old Bonita man, Jeremy Lindsay, was injured in a brawl at Qualcomm Stadium before last summer's KGB Sky Show and died July 28. He was beaten in a melee in the parking lot. The homicide remains unsolved.

For tomorrow's game, fans are encouraged to get to the stadium early to accommodate the security measures and longer lines. Fans should arrive at the gates by noon in order to reach their seats in time for the 1:15 p.m. kickoff.

The parking lot will open at 6 a.m. and is expected to be full and closed by noon, police said.

Tailgating in the stadium parking lot is permitted in individual parking spaces only, Cash said. Citations will be issued after 11 a.m. for tailgate parties that overflow into adjacent parking spaces.
