Gardener: maybe Wannstedt's just a control freak

Recommended Posts

True story: on a hunch, I googled "Wannstedt" and "control freak" and confirmed that this whole Dolphin fiasco with Gardener may be as much a story about Wannstedt as it is about Gardener.

My Google search turned up this story:

To win, coaches have to abandon drill-sergeant style

Sept. 27, 2001

By Pete Prisco

SportsLine.com Senior Writer

http://lists.rollanet.org/pipermail/rampage/Week-of-Mon-20010924/011741.html

with the following quote:

"There have been a lot of coaches in Green Bay fired trying to be Vince Lombardi," said Dolphins coach Dave Wannstedt.

Wannstedt got fired in Chicago trying to be Jimmy Johnson.

As a disciple of Johnson, Wannstedt's first head-coaching job turned into a failure when he was let go by the Bears after five seasons. His record was 41-57, with one playoff appearance.

Johnson won two Super Bowls with his dictatorship style, so it made sense for Wannstedt to copy that style.

Like Johnson in Dallas, Wannstedt had his hand in everything. He made all the defensive calls, not trusting the coordinator to do so, yet was so control-oriented that he also took charge of little things such as who would ride what bus.

He disappeared into that control-freak mode that coaches often lose themselves in, their heads spinning in all directions but not concentrating on the things that count.

"I've learned a lot from that," Wannstedt said.

Sure, Dave. Sure you have.

Shane Matthews played for Wannstedt in Chicago. The Washington Post says:

[Matthews] butted heads a bit with former Bears coach Dave Wannstedt early in his career when he wanted to go to NFL Europe to get playing experience, but Wannstedt told him to spend his offseason in Chicago....

"My first year in Chicago, they never gave me a chance," he said. "My second year, I wanted to go play in the World League, go over there and get some experience. But Wannstedt wouldn't let me go. He said, 'You're our future. Stay here and do our offseason workout program and learn from us.' That kind of screwed me up right there. That was the whole issue until '99, when I finally got to play: 'You don't have any experience.' Well, nobody gave me a chance to play."

So let me get this straight: Wannstedt is so obsessive about his offseason workout program that he'd prevent his QB from getting NFL Europe playing experience just so he can hit the gym in Chicago?

That was 1994. Eight years later, history repeats itself when Wannstedt butts heads with Gardener over the offseason workout program (and also unreturned phone calls).

Long live the control freak.

Nice find ASF, I remember hearing a story about him being anal. The art of delegation must be learned and used . Nobody knows everything, that's a reason I like Spurrier. He knows his limitations and sticks with what he does best. This way the qb's get all of his attention.

I am still worried about Gardner's back. If we sign him, I bet he doesn't make it thru the season. Any takers??

I doubt he's coming here.

It seems to me if a player leaves a team visit without a contract or at least an understanding, they're probably not going to sign with that team.

Look for him to sign with the Broncos. Too bad, because the Redskins could use his exact skillset. He is unquestionably a risk, physically and mentally, but so are a lot of players. He'd be a great signing for the right price - whatever that is.

This is a very astute post. I was wondering the same thing when I heard this story. There are always two sides and when you are talking Ex-Cowboy coaches, it isn't always the best strategy to focus on the player. If this were true then we'd all be kicking Bruce Smith and Darrell Green out the door for dissing Marty last year. I think Gardener may be the offended party in this dispute.

Look how often this guy has been hurt and missed time with his back. Anyone still want to take the risk on this guy?

However, Schwartz added that Gardener hasn't had any recent back problems. Schwartz said this appears to be a business deal with no ulterior motive. He added he talked to the team Monday. The Dolphins haven’t approached Gardener with the idea, but he’s not opposed to it. The Dolphins recently asked Gardener to rework his contract, but he refused. The Dolphins led the league in pass defense last season but finished 17th against the run. Defensive coordinator Jim Bates knows the team needs to improve against the run. The biggest changes could be the increased use of eight-man fronts. In that scheme, the safeties playing closer to the line of scrimmage for run support, and more zone coverage schemes. Injuries to starting DT Daryl Gardener and his backups, Jermaine Haley and Ernest Grant contributed to the problem.

"Talking to the doctors, they said it is not career ending," Gardener said. "They said I'll be able to come back again. They said if I had a fusion [surgery], I'd still be able to come back again because of the way I'm built. I'm a freak of nature." Gardener also dismissed any speculation that he might retire because of back problems.

Hey tommy, next time post the Miami phonebook, eh?

Everybody knows Gardener's back is a risk -- I beat that point to death when this first came up. Gardener is a good acquisition only with a low base salary (with incentives for playing time). He also shouldn't be counted on as a full-time starter, only as part of a DT rotation. But with those premises, Gardener is a great pickup -- he's like Sam Adams at 1/4 the price.
