EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP) - Minnesota cornerback Fred Smoot will miss Friday's preseason game at Seattle after jamming his already-sore right knee during practice.

"We're just taking a precaution to make sure I'm ready for Sept. 11," said Smoot, referring to the season opener against Tampa Bay. He got hurt Monday while running through the end zone and into a slope that sits on the edge of the Vikings' practice field.

Smoot, who missed much of training camp with a strained neck and then the knee injury, made his preseason debut last week against San Diego. He is expected to return to practice next Monday.

"We're going to shut him down so we are not in any danger next week," coach Mike Tice said.

Wide receiver Kelly Campbell (strained quadriceps) will probably be out another two weeks. But running backs Michael Bennett (sore neck) and Mewelde Moore (sprained ankle) are expected to practice next week.
