Has NFL passed by Joe Gibbs?

The magic wand renaissance expected when Joe Gibbs arrived in Washington after the fallout of Steve Spurrier remains a work in progress. Some might even call it a questionable work. The Redskins, in certain games last season, actually weren't as exciting offensively as most of Spurrier's efforts. Last season, Mark Brunell and Washington's offense didn't resemble many of Gibbs' past quarterbacking, deep-ball heroics.

There is this faith attached to Gibbs because of his Hall of Fame status and three world championships won when the NFC was the game's dominant conference. A lot of that has changed and fans are starting to wonder what strides Gibbs will make this season on top dog Philadelphia. And will they be enough for him to keep on coaching in 2006?

At present, the Redskins are mired in one of those off-season workout headaches with one or two of their players complaining to the NFL Players Association about workouts being too physical. But more importantly, they must make some decisions about releasing high-priced offensive players like Rod Gardner and Chad Morton. Gibbs has already run off Lavenerues Coles to the Jets for pint-sized Santana Moss (whose return ability jeopardizes Morton's future). Washington has tried unsuccessfully to trade Gardner, who was a 1,000-yard receiver only three seasons ago.

What is questionable about releasing someone like Gardner (and Morton) is that it initially admits a horrible personnel decision and money wasted. Gardner, only 28, remains a very physical receiver and someone who should be able to help several teams.

Let's be honest — the Redskins were competitive last season only because of their defense. Ex-Buffalo head coach Gregg Williams did a marvelous job, especially without the services of talented pass rusher LaVar Arrington for much of the season. In Year 2 of Gibbs, the onus is on him and his offense to get the Redskins back into playoff contention.

I may be incorrect but is this not a complete fabrication? Isn't the supposed evidence from video footage not complaints?

Wow... I know their main page updates frequently but right now Gibbs and company is on the main page of www.foxsports.com. Check it out.

I really, really hope we can prove everyone wrong this year and put up a winning season.

No doubt man. Hopefully, all the Skins critics (sadly an infinite amount of people) will eat their words by the end of the season.

I hate hearing articles like this, don't people have better things to do than just bashing the Skins??:puke:

Have you ever gone back with an old girlfriend only to realize that the reasons you left in the first place are still there? Not only that but she's not as fast, bright, or exciting as your last girl. (NASCAR)

Yeah, she's paying you well, but she ain't buying you anything that you can't buy yourself. With friends asking "why?" and doubters saying, "I told you...", the fuse is burning twice as fast and you will blow that much sooner.

No, the NFL has not passed by Gibbs. The World is bigger than the NFL and Gibbs has experienced this first hand. To go back to coaching would be equivalent to you going back to the position you had ten years ago. The NFL simply isn't as much fun for him as it used to be. Before his contract expires, Gibbs will bounce.
