I've been saying he is going to be an upgraded Lamar Jackson that has the run threat (not as dynamic as Lamar, but who is?) , but he is a much better passer than Lamar so he is going to be insanely tough to defend. If we even have a top 15 defense, I expect us to be contending for a playoff spot. That's how much of a game changer I expect this guy to be. So glad I can continue to watch this guy QB one of my teams. 😎 I think Terry is going to have a record year with JD5 throwing the rock. They both have an insane drive and work ethic.

The outright homerism in this thread is hilarious.  "Upgraded" Lamar Jackson?  Much better passer than Lamar?  On what planet is this even remotely accurate.  Dude hasn't even played a down yet and is a better version than one of the best QBs in the league.  FML...

  2. Drafting Jayden Daniels is going to be Peter's biggest mistake. RG3 all over again, except JD is a less talented version of RG3.  He's going to get blown up because he doesn't protect himself, doesn't know how to slide, and doesn't go thru progressions.  Maye and McCarthy are going to sit for a year, iron out their fixable deficiencies, and be the best QBs out of this class (I'm also not ruling out Penix).  The Commanders wanted the QB that could start now, and it's going to cost them dearly.

I could get way more behind maye if I knew for sure he didn’t need a whole year, or even two to sit and learn. Maybe he does, maybe he doesn’t. We don’t know the FO’s plan with him if he’s the pick. But I can’t get behind watching Mariota play the whole season as Maye sits, that would be painful to witness. I’m sure Quinn wants someone who’s ready to go day one without a doubt as he doesn’t have the luxury of throwing away the next 1-2 years

I'm not so sure anyone but Caleb is ready to start Day 1.  I'm not convinced that Daniels reads the field well enough to be a Day 1 starter.

New article from Yahoo (referencing a podcast with PFF analyst Steve Palazzolo) that confirms/reinforces a lot of the good things we've discussed about Maye:

Drake Maye could be among best QB prospects ‘ever' in one key area

    [excerpt]

“I think Drake Maye is one of the best middle-of-the-field throwers I’ve ever seen in college football. As far as the feel (of) throwing a seam route, throwing the ball around defenders, throwing with touch, layering it — the middle of the field is outstanding. I think he’s got to work outside the numbers a little bit better. That’s my my quick take on Drake.”

That’s a bold take from Palazzolo, but the numbers back him up: Maye had an insane 99.9 PFF grade (out of 100) on “deep center” passes in 2023 and a lofty 89.2 grade on “deep intermediate” passes. His passer rating was well over 100 on all throws in the middle of the field beyond the line of scrimmage, as illustrated in the PFF passing chart below.

Drake Maye’s 2023 passing chart (via PFF)

Maye’s excellence in the middle of the field stems not just from his incredibly strong arm, but also his ability to vary his throwing speeds, as NFL.com’s Cynthia Frelund explained to Perry on a recent episode of Next Pats.

“That translates well because you have to adjust to the game speed of the NFL, and you’re not necessarily going to be throwing bombs down the field,” Frelund explained. “You need to also adjust your speeds for intermediate throws, which is where Drake Maye really excels, and also shorter throws, which do actually matter.”

but but but Maye is inaccurate.  That's what the Daniels fanboys have been telling me.

I am going to buy into whoever we chose because I am not an expert and I am going to trust our front office, but I definitely like Maye at the second pick.

Yea it's not even close to me. Maye looks like a guy who'll be available most Sundays, and he'll be consistent and actually know how to play in an NFL offense, as opposed to Daniels who'll be on the sidelines holding a clipboard because he's a feather above 200 pounds and thinks he can outrun an NFL defense.

TJ Tampa.  I like what i've seen, i don't see the round 1 rap that some have about him.   i actually like Melton ahead of him.  But I like Tampa, too.

Feels inevitable though that the Bucks will draft him, julist like Eli Apple seemed inevitable for the Giants. 😎

I wished he ran.  Speed matters clearly for CBs but he looks at least fast enough.

Long arms-long legs and is physical -- too grabby at times.  Looks like quick WRs might be able to give him problems, not the loosest hips. Sticky enough in coverage.  Feisty.

Not as physical as Melton is the run game but is physical enough.  2 picks last year so some ball skills.    Looked to be playing a lot of zone when I was watching but he has the skill set to play man.

Seems like he would excel as a FS than a CB.  He can tackle that's for sure.

Daniels surely has talent, but I have RG3 PTSD and he looks like the second coming.

    JD= Bayou Bob

I’m honestly not seeing what makes Daniels a better prospect than Justin Fields tbh. I don’t think that Daniels is a better passer or has better field vision than Fields at this point, and we’re seeing firsthand what Fields is and is not.

  8. I have no problems getting KC.  I'd rather he play behind a makeshift o-line than a rookie QB or Howell.  KC knows how to make quick reads and nullify a pass rush. I don't want our shiny new rookie QB getting pummelled.  Quickest way to ruin a young QB is putting him behind a bad o-line (see Howell).
