Patriots. Their situation is different from ours.  They're trying to make Maye earn his first team reps, and they're also trying to protect him.  A bunch of the important players on their offense are other rookies, and they're trying to get him accustomed to running an offense from the huddle.  But the main reason why Maye is behind Brissett is because Alex Van Pelt is the OC and he doesn't have to change the pace of his installation because Brissett already knows the offense from playing in Cleveland. They planned on Brissett being the starter this year when they signed him because of that.  I've been reading the speculation about when Maye will start, and most of their fans and team reporters think it'll be before their bye unless Jacoby plays either really poorly or really well.  They have a late bye, and they're expecting to be out of the playoff picture a few weeks before then.  Things typically don't go according to plan though, so who knows when Maye will start.

In theory, their development plan isn't a bad one for any rookie QB.  It's similar to how Lamar Jackson, Pat Mahomes, and Josh Allen were developed their rookie years.  Our situation is different though because we don't have a vet who already knows Kingsbury's offense.  Kingsbury necessarily has to start the installation here from step one.  I'm guessing we're going to run a lot of no huddle to ease the adjustment to calling an offense from the huddle for Jayden, something Kliff did in Arizona.  And I'm guessing we'll keep things pretty basic, and lean on the run game to move the chains.  But I'm nervous about having Jayden as the day one starter.  Not just because of his own adjustment to the NFL, but because of the supporting cast.  It's better here than it is in New England, but not by a lot.  Thank God for McLaurin, because if we didn't have him, we'd be in the same boat as New England.  Our OL is somehow better than theirs, but we know it still sucks.  I don't understand how we plan on protecting Jayden, and getting him through a full season is going to be dicey.  We're going to utilize his running abilities to force defenses to play easier single high zone coverages against us, but that's going to exacerbate the durability and conditioning concerns that every rookie QB faces, not just Jayden.  Anthony Richardson is at least 30 pounds heavier than Jayden, and he made it through four games before being seriously injured.

Thanks Going Commando this solves my ponderings pretty much - I'm a bit unfamiliar with the intricacies of the game & also share the concern about JD's size & durability/protection  (get your explanation & you point out most rookies have to face it.) Thanks for unpacking it.

I guess I threw Maye into the conversation, not really having figured out the differences. (Giants, duh!)

    Excited for the season!!

I think the ceiling is 8 wins.  I think realistically, we finish with 6 or 7.  I'll take that.

A lot of fans tend to forget when their team drafts a rookie QB, that growing pains are inevitable.  The kind that cost you games.  If Jayden can stay healthy, I believe he's the real deal.  Doesn't mean he's ready to win though.   And that's fine.  I love the dude, and it's gonna be fun to watch him grow.

I think the offense will be legit fun to watch, and Jayden will keep us in games with his legs.  But there is so much new: schemes, coaches, players.  There's a ton to learn.  And we have a brutal start to the season.   I also think we very well may have the worst starting CB tandem in the league this year.  Can't fix everything in one offseason, and it'll be a Code Red spot on the team next offseason for sure.  I think that's gonna cost us big time in a lot of games this year.  It is what it is.  I trust this AP implicitly.

Bottom line is that I don't care about the record this year.  I'm already thrilled at what ownership has done.  For the first time in forever, we have real football people in charge.  I'm just looking forward to sitting back and watching this thing grow!

I'm with you Mr Redwards - it'll just be fun to watch it grow, after so long in the wilderness. Go JD5, you good thing.       When I threw the dart it hit the 8

  3. From the limited tape I saw, had the same conclusion as Voice of Reason: McCarthy looks to me, well behind Daniels & Maye.

As an admitted novice,  I thought Daniels protection was better than Maye's; he seemed to have plenty of time in the pocket & was good at exploiting the gaps that opened up and had the confidence to wait for that. Obviously won't have that luxury at the top level but shows smarts & quick thinking. An absolute athlete on the run, and evasive, but how sustainable with the body size? Would need a stellar protection scheme. Also had a couple of "go to" guns out wide.

It's hard not to think Maye's size would be more attractive to a re-building franchise. Too simplistic? Strikes me he's basically got the solid skills to invest around & like was mentioned, had nowhere near the protection Daniels enjoyed, but generally handled the pressure ok.

Much enjoy the banter in here.  can't wait for all to be revealed.

Yep, we needed a grey beard head coach.  We've got a new ownership group, a young first time GM, and we're about to have a rookie QB.  Someone in the leadership circle needed some actual experience in order to set standards for the organization.  In hindsight, Ben Johnson was never going to be that guy.

I like Quinn.  I like him way more than Rivera at the time of his hiring, and I like this org chart about a million times more.  I'm not going to jump off the bandwagon on this build unless they do something idiotic at QB.  We'll see what happens in April, but I don't think they will.  That part of the equation is the biggest no-brainer choice for us to make IMO.  GM and HC were as tricky as they were critical, and not at all obvious decisions to a bunch of dummies on the outside like all of us in here.  Bob Myers is really good.  Harris and the other owners have done well this offseason.

Couldn't agree more with this summary, after much reflection on what we genuinely needed for the franchise at this stage.

Speaking from experience, it’s battered fan syndrome- always expecting the worst.  Particularly when it seems like things are looking up.

It's real, after all these years BUT we have a very decent owner & now GM who know the criteria of what they want.

    They'll get their best guy

  7. Hey all, new (overseas) boy to these boards, love all the opinion & emotion; after watching Jahan's film & interviews, will not be surprised if he has a very decent career & rocks it in the burgandy & gold. The kid carries a football around with him 24/7, lives & breathes it, since 4 years old he said. If character equals success, this kid will have it.

Can't wait to see him in action.  Sure it's early days, but quietly confident about our picks so far.

  8. I'm a white guy living outside of the States but have visited many times.

I could never understand why Colin Kaepernick was vilified & basically barred from the NFL for taking the knee.

And now I see Roger Goodell crying crocodile tears over the current situation.

I'm sorry but I have great difficulty with him as a credible voice at the moment.

Reinstating Kaepernick would be quite a significant statement, however.
