  1. I realize this is a counterintuitive suggestion for this fanbase...but, some people might want to just chill TF out 😆

I would have preferred Johnson or Macdonald over Quinn too.  But, no fans interviewed these guys, Peters & Co. did.  If they wanted those two guys bad enough, the dollars or years would have been greater. Clearly the assessed difference between all the coaches wasn't that substantial in their minds.  Otherwise, one of those guys would be here.

In the coaching model they're going for, a Head Coach DOES actually need to be a motivator, a leader, an organizer, and a manager (or, "a leader of men").  They hired a HC who has those traits and now they will go find the right Coordinators who are sharp, innovative, have a high aptitude, and an exemplary work ethic.  All traits that will make them excellent and effective on their side of the ball.  In the coaching model the team wants, the overall coaching staff can be more effective at winning when compared to a staff working under the "potential" of an unproven, younger coach.  OCs & DCs aren't always great HCs because the traits that get someone to their current role aren't usually the same traits needed for their next. For every Shannahan, McVey, LaFleur, O'Connell, or McDaniels, there are more that were not as effective at HC as they were as OC/DC.

Quinn's record at HC won’t draw out overconfidence in anyone.  But, there were no reports of chaos or dysfunction in ATL, just a mediocre record.  We gotta remember that organizations, players, and situations are all different.  Record aside, Quinn seems to have the HC traits AND DC traits above.  Johnson & MacDonald have the OC or DC traits above.  But, they haven't had their chance to exercise those HC traits (as a HC at least).  So, it's a bit of a gamble.  It seems that Peters & Co. didn't think the risk/reward was that great with those guys.  Otherwise...one of them would be here.  It's not like the organization doesn't have the power to change the contract numbers.  Seems probable they just didn't see that was warranted.  Furthermore, if anyone thinks that Peters simply “forgot” to call Kyle and ask his opinion of Quinn as a HC, they’re trippin’.

So, everyone who's up in arms might want to just exercise the "guarded optimism" that we've all been forced to learn from watching this $h!tshow for the last 25 years.  Or, just carry on going haywire as if you're more informed on the overall roadmap for this team than Peters is.

I admit I may be in a fan island but the disrespect I see BB getting from many fans on the internet and  others outside the league, and their reasons being  "all he was is due to Brady" and " look how bad they did the last three years" is pretty flaky overall. Those two points are worth due consideration but they hardly justify the conclusion that he's some low value coaching option.

Totally agree with this.  Whoever hires BB will be getting a guy who's particularly motivated to prove it wasn't just Brady.

He can be motivated all he wants, motivation won't yield the results he's looking for.  Brady or no Brady, his record speaks for itself:

    • HC Browns & Patriots without Brady: 82-97
    • HC of the Patriots without Brady: 47-57
    • HC of the Patriots with Brady: 219-64

I agree that a conclusion can't be reached on record alone.  But, he had nearly complete control of that team so there's nobody else to point fingers at.  Not to mention the play on the field was, at best, lackluster.  Is that due to rotating OCs & DCs?...possibly.  But a head coach that's worth the praise should be able to coach through one player leaving and periodically repetitive Coordinators who test the waters as HCs.

I'd rather go with EB than BB.  I'd be in favor of some suggestions of AI-guided HC decisions over BB.  BB will not win another Super Bowl.  Period.

This is all probably moot anyway as BB would want more control than Peters will give him.

So, what I haven’t seen talked about is that all of this coming to light sheds some much needed clarity on the defense’s issues working together: they don’t like each other.

I’m not talking every one of them or anything like that. I’m sure most of them get along. But there is obvious tension.

In retrospect, when these guys make a play I can’t recall many times that one of their teammates was excited for them. Or at least a fellow DL.

Tension like that makes it difficult to find success. And part of me wonders if Chase’s difficulties have been in part due to toxicity in that room.

All of this could be a one time thing that just dissipates. But Payne’s Dad being involved tells me there’s more to this and it’s something that has been brewing for awhile.

I’m not even saying Payne is the problem. Let me be clear here. He may not be. But whoever the biggest issues are in that room I would think need to be removed.

We’ll have to trust Rivera to straighten that out.

I think you’re spot on with this.  I’ve noticed your point a number of times - the defense does really seem like a “team”.  They’re individuals out for individual goals, not team ones.  Little enthusiasm for each other’s accomplishments…which, with the right mentality, are actually TEAM accomplishments.  Could be coaching issues, player personality conflicts, or just the way younger players mesh with tenured (yet proven) coaches.  Regardless,  I really hope they get this $h!t fixed because the performance is unacceptable.

On a side note, I haven’t posted here in a whiiiille.  But, I had to chime in on this point simply because of my agreement and my frustration with the root of what might be wrong with the defense.  I also remember you being mostly spot on with your read on team issues.  I might have disagreed with you a time or two in the mid-late 2000s when I was more active on the old board (I can’t remember for sure).  But, I definitely remember your levelheaded-ness and old school ES style of communicating your point.  Both are very refreshing.
