Week 5 Faceoff: Prisco vs. Judge

Has the time away been too much for Joe Gibbs?

Pete Prisco: Not a chance. The Redskins are losing games because they aren't holding onto the ball, not because Gibbs can't coach. He still remains sharp and he still commands attention in the locker room. His players respect him. That said, he does need to get a better handle on sideline management, including clock management. But what coach doesn't? In talking to some Redskins players, they strongly believe Gibbs still has what it takes. His history allows him to keep the team in pads all year without complaining. Any other coach would be getting ripped. The discipline he has instilled was needed in the worst way. Gibbs will get this thing turned around. Remember, this is a man who won Super Bowls with Doug Williams and Mark Rypien. He can still coach, no matter how long he's been away.

Clark Judge: No. You don't forget how to coach, and Gibbs hasn't. But he's forgotten how to tell time. Would someone please give this guy a watch? There are a couple of problems here: 1) this team makes too many mistakes -- their 10 turnovers are second only to the 49ers for worst in the NFC, and 2) Gibbs is a slow starter. In 1985 he lost three of his first four, and the Redskins finished 10-6. Twice he lost his first two, and once he dropped his first five. Gibbs is hamstrung here by a rushing attack that should be better than 20th in league standings, but that's a testament to the turnovers and a rotten third-down percentage. Gibbs isn't the problem; error-prone players are
