BlitzFiftySix
NEW NUMBERS AVAILABLE FOR WIDEOUTS One of the less publicized developments at the owners' meetings is the decision of the league to allow receivers to wear jersey numbers from 10 to 19, in addition to the traditional 80 to 89 range. In past years, receivers would pick up a number in the teens during training camp, when the flood of receivers and defensive lineman (and, in some cities, retired numbers) ate up the ten available selections in the 80s. Prior to 1998, the player could keep the number once the regular season began, which enabled Keyshawn Johnson to maintain number 19. But the NFL then required a player to pick up one of the available jerseys in the 80 to 89 range after the roster was cut to 53. This tweak resulted in Randy Moss changing from 18 to 84 in 1998. For established players like Moss, the question is whether they want to change. And for the NFL, the decision of a few star athletes to nab a new number could end up generating some extra merchandising dollars.

Uh, try a few million dollars. I don't really like this move, I realize it's only numbers.... but come on.. how can I root for a guy whos number is 13. And I've always identified a player by his number. If he is number 84, I know he is a WR. So on and so forth. I rather liked that system.
>>Spearhead>>
Meshawn Johnson has worn #19 since the Jets drafted his sorry ass.
JoeSkins
This is terrible. Next thing you know linebackers will get to wear numbers in the teens, and Arrington will hold out until he gets #11.
miragv
They need to keep the number system the way it is.
