Redskins report: Strategy and personnel Aug. 11, 2003

Signing QB Danny Wuerffel was the week's big move. The Redskins appeared to be covering all their bases in case Rob Johnson doesn't get up to speed with the offense. Johnson's play, however, got an immediate and not unsurprising boost after Wuerffel's arrival.

The Redskins also signed K Matt Simonton, but just for a day. K John Hall had a slight twinge in his groin during conditioning Thursday before the loss at Carolina, and the Redskins needed a spot kicker. Simonton predictably missed his one attempt, from 35 yards.

Agent Jack Reale's visit to discuss the contract of CB Champ Bailey was pushed back until this weekend. Reale will watch the preseason home opener against New England and then enter into early negotiations to extend Bailey's deal, which is set to expire at the end of the season.

The Redskins remain interested in the possible return of DT Dan Wilkinson or the pickup of another interior lineman, but nothing was imminent.

BATTLE OF THE WEEK

Trung Canidate vs. Kenny Watson for starting RB--Neither rusher did anything in the loss to Carolina, an ominous sign for Washington's offense. Canidate had three carries for 4 yards (getting stuffed on a third-and-2 at one point), while Watson was a yard worse on his three carries. Ladell Betts continued to sit out with a sprained elbow, though he appeared likely to return soon.

OTHER BATTLE FRONTS

Taylor Jacobs assumed the lead for the No. 3 WR position over Cliff Russell, Patrick Johnson and others. However, Jacobs had just one catch for 11 yards at Carolina. ... S David Terrell continues to lead Ifeanyi Ohalete for the starting job alongside newcomer Matt Bowen. ... P Bryan Barker shanked one punt and his coverage allowed a big return on another. He's still ahead of Brent Bartholomew, who managed to drop one inside the Panthers' 10.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK

WR Laveranues Coles--The high-profile pickup from the Jets continues to set an example for Washington's young corps. He sparkled in practice and although he had just one catch in the game, it was a 48-yarder and he was open on several other occasions. The bet here continues to be that Coles proves Washington smart for investing the $13 million signing bonus.

ROOKIE REPORT

WR Taylor Jacobs has established himself as Washington's No. 3 receiver behind Laveranues Coles and Rod Gardner. Expect his numbers to pick up as the offense gets more comfortable.

OL Derrick Dockery got a considerable amount of playing time against Carolina as coaches evaluate how much of his promise will translate into immediate contributions. The results are solid but not spectacular so far.

QB Gibran Hamdan shows excellent mechanics despite his limited experience. However, he might end up on the practice squad now because the Redskins re-signed Danny Wuerffel to compete for the No. 2 spot. Wuerffel or Rob Johnson ultimately could be No. 3.

INJURY REPORT

K John Hall had a slight groin twinge and missed the Carolina game but should return for New England. ... LB Jeremiah Trotter (knee) didn't travel to Carolina and is trimming his workload. However, he remains hopeful of being 100 percent by the opener. ... DEs Regan Upshaw and Bruce Smith both remained in Washington to rest their rehabbing knees. Their practice schedule is limited but both are basically fine. ... G Tre Johnson remains out with a strained Achilles' tendon. Without the pressure to get back and start, he is trying to get 100 percent healthy for the first time in years. ... OL Rod Jones continues to sit with a sprained ankle. ... DE Nic Clemons is out for a while with a hip flexor.
