Live just outside of Toronto, I think that is where many immigrated to back when became over. My dad was a big follower of Peter Marshall and the is the reason for being a Washington fan.

Interesting stuff. šŸ˜€ Hope youā€™ve made a good life for yourself across the pond whilst retaining fond memories of NI. šŸ˜Š

The weird plotline for me about Ron and Bieiniemy -- came off like Ron was afraid to tell him what to do or even hands on manage him.Ā  Keim suggesting that Ron was aware that the O line wasn't hot but might have done more to reinforce it if he knew how pass happy Bieniemy intended to be -- really so Ron and Bieniemy didn't even talk about the offense and where it was going?

    Ā

And it came out that the players wanted Rivera to be more hands on with this stuff.Ā  Ron telling the players to motivate themselves at half-time.Ā  Ā All feels pathetic.Ā  People joke about Spurrier treating the job like its a 9 to 5 -- feels like Rivera did, too.Ā

    Ā

Contrast that to beat guys saying off season both Peters and Quinn have been showing up early and working non-stop -- I think we got light years of improvement.

    Ā

Heck Keim who is no flame thrower doubling down multiple times that he can't overstate how much better he expects this coaching staff is, highlighting on defense.

With what has been mentioned before (by yourself SiP, and others) that Ron went into last season seemingly coasting without any degree of urgency always made the cynic in me not rule out him taking his feel-good story of overcoming serious illness as unquestionable job-security. But whilst Iā€™ve said myself I think he took on way too much in those very circumstances, in hindsight his reign was atrocious - between the picks made in the 1st round each year (despite me also maintaining at the time, with what folk knew at the time, CY was the right pick but in future hindsight looks horrible) and coaching staff assembled.Ā
    Ā

To see the hiring of DQ looking more and more like the right one, what with Ben Johnsonā€™s questionable attitude as HC-material coming to the fore, is incredibly encouraging then and between the subsequent hires in both the coaching staff and scouting personnel it just continues to be layer after layer of the broken house Dan built being removed.Ā

Dang it. Right after we got rid of all the negative, criminal, abhorrent behavior and bad publicity.

The incident itself occurred whilst he was still with the Jags so shouldnā€™t be a negative against us.Ā

    So telling. šŸ˜‚

Seems things are a little flat in general after what looks to be a pretty non-flashy 1st round, with no real out-and-out shockers that Iā€™m aware of.

    Ā

As for the JD pick, I was more a Maye fan admittedly but Iā€™m glad itā€™s done now as it was exhausting seeing an absence of middle-ground amongst posters at times leading up to things and hopefully for those who are really down on Daniels, and by extension the FO, come close of play Sunday thereā€™s greater optimism on the back of the rest of the selections.Ā

Well I not sure thatā€™s the most professional approach from either the team

Dave Tepper knows exactly what heā€™s doing - was watching Dans draft day strategy from the last few years in a bar with the volume down, but got the gist of it.Ā

Dillard is really intriguing. Think he played RT in Philly and LT in TEN.

Pretty sure he could barely stay healthy in Philly and only lasted 1 season in TEN before being cut, which is curious. Shame as he was touted as a good pick when drafted, but Iā€™d pass.Ā

I watched him being interviewed on NFL network yesterday and I almost made a post about it because it definitely was a little weird. I look into his eyes and I donā€™t see a lot going on behind the scenes. Just a mindless killing machineā€¦ and I like that ****.

Itā€™s interesting you say this as having seen pictures of Bowers previously Iā€™ve actually wondered if he potentially has autistic spectrum disorder - as the father of an autistic child the eyes can be a tell. Donā€™t believe Iā€™ve seen much chatter about him as a player, though, which is surprising given how highly he was touted but then again thereā€™s more ā€œhigh profileā€ guys seemingly dominating the draft landscape so heā€™s perhaps flying below the radar, which could suit him who knows.

    Ā

As an aside DJ and BB had Trevor Sikkema on the Move the Sticks podcast and he really doesnā€™t seem particularly high on Jayden Daniels. Not to say he was trashing him, but rather frequently mentioned others instead of him - clearly is a big fan of Maye, but McCarthy and even Nix were talked up (again well ahead of Daniels). Just found it notable given there was a lot of emphasis on guys being able to attack all areas of the field and especially across the middle and was actually hoping to hear some comments on JD on that front as I know itā€™s been discussed/debated here.Ā

To clarify, I meant through the draft-process and post-combine rather than him not being discussed as a 1st round talent etc leading up to and through the season.

There's also an in-n-out nearby if you're willing to walk.

Being from this side of the pond I had to Google what that is, so cheers for bringing it to my attention and weā€™ll hopefully give it a try. šŸ˜

Attendance at the SB yesterday was around 62K. Allegiant, not SoFi or Atlanta, should be the model for the new stadium capacity wise.Ā

Squad of us are making the trip to Vegas (staying at the Luxor) in September so Iā€™m looking forward to taking in the Allegiant. Looks quite the stadium and I agree is perhaps the model/template going forward,Ā

He doesn't call plays. He has the OC title but LaFleur calls the plays so that is going to hold him back from head coaching opportunities the same way it held EB back in KC (and Frank Smith potentially in Miami)

Ahhh gotcha. Also didnā€™t realise that about Frank Smith. šŸ˜„

Exactly, hereā€™s a guy nobody has heard of that could very well be a Diamond in the makingā€¦ I must confess I figured reading your post he was the OC of the Pack but his journey is impressive and maybe not this go around but next season we might be hearing his name a lotā€¦

Pretty sure he is OC in GB, no? I agree though his journey is intriguing with a year long stint in San Fran the year Kyle was hired there. You could be right then itā€™s possibly a year too soon for him, but maybe one to keep an eye on for some team a year from now. Ā

  12. To the point that money & power/control has huge sway I completely agree. Not to mention Johnson could be someone who sees Carolina being a huge challenge and one to be embraced. But Iā€™d hope 2 decades of Dans personality playing out in front of the entire NFL world would make anyone with an ounce of concern for their own reputation draw even some comparisons to Tepper, even if itā€™s not a complete apples-and-apples scenario.
    Ā

Again then, one has just allowed a HC to see out a full season despite it being an embarrassment, whilst the other cut his 3rd HC in 6 years loose with 6 games left after saddling him with a QB who he may not have wanted, not to mention any subsequent HC has the task of rebuilding (in contrast to anyone coming here having the choice of hand picked QB to mould from the get-go) and with limited resources to do so.Ā
    Ā

In short, Tepper may well go all out to get his guy whether thatā€™s Johnson or someone else, but as mentioned Dans legacy should be a cautionary tale that guys who do indeed get what they want through promises of money & power/control are often also incredibly impatient and fickle who can drastically set a HCā€™s career back if things donā€™t go the way an owner wants or and become enamoured with another shiny new toy - think when Mr Burns hired Frank Grimes only to replace him a short time later with a heroic dog he took a liking too. šŸ˜

Iā€™m sure heā€™d be compensated handsomely and enjoy a sound quality of life, but thereā€™s a higher risk that his career would stall and his reputation diminished if his relationship with such an ill-tempered and unpredictable owner deteriorates and culminates in his abrupt firing. By then, he wouldnā€™t be a hot commodity, a new cluster of offensive gurus could emerge, and people will have forgotten about his bright stint in Detroit. Financial achievement can breed failure if money is oneā€™s primary focus and motivation. If itā€™s the promise of personnel control that entices him, then itā€™s even more prudent for us to analyze our commitment to such a person who has yet coached an entire team much less been responsible for its composition.

Just seen not only did you get in front of me BB, mate, but also articulated it much better. šŸ¤£

I see this as John Lynch landing Kyle Shanahan and working so closely with him to build the 49ers to what they are. First time GM brings in hot shot young OC and they grow together through the years.

If you mean Ben Johnson coming here to work with Adam Peters then I absolutely agree and believe itā€™ll be sold as such.

If you mean Tepper selling it to him I just have a hard time thinking the dysfunction already emerging there wonā€™t give any credible candidate real concern. Course just watch Johnson going there now after me saying that. šŸ¤£

Most pertinently, Tepper's habit of firing coaches so quickly is going to hurt him in future searches. The HC job starts to look like a career killer.

Is why Iā€™d be amazed if Johnson chooses to go there as a first time HC. Pretty sure since becoming owner there Tepper has averaged firing a coach every 2 years. The recent incident with the fan then, not to mention the belief he involved himself in picking Bryce Young suggests a Snyder-esque impulsivity and meddling, which again I canā€™t imagine to be reassuring to any potential candidate regardless of financial incentives.Ā

That seems the consensus - heā€™s a RT not a LT as well so that maybe hurts him.

Right now if we can draft any RT who can be a mainstay on the line for years to come ah-la Lane Johnson thatā€™s a win.

    Ā

I saw some chatter in the thread about Troy Fautanu at Washington, btw, who Iā€™ve consistently noted as kicking inside in the pros. Anyone got a good read on him? Only he looks to be the same size as Rashawn Slater (who from recollection was also touted as a guard but has successfully stayed at tackle) albeit apparently his arms measure longer at 34 inches. His feet and hands are said to be impressive. Thoughts on him as a potential LT in the 2nd having drafted say Taliese Fuaga in the 1st (preferably after a trade down šŸ˜)?Ā
