I get that. But for me the goal would be to build a team that's a perennial contender not a team that, if all the conditions are just right, might be able to fall forwards into the playoffs or even get to a SB one year. And the teams that are perennial contenders to be in the playoffs and potentially get to the SB all have good franchise QBs.

We've seen multiple situations where an absolutely dominant defense only lasts for a certain (usually short) period of time, mostly because a team usually just can't afford to keep all of the pieces there, because of injuries, all sorts of things. I think we can all admit that QB is the one single position that can, by itself, most directly affect a whole NFL team.

So honestly, our situation isn't all that unique IMO. Plenty of teams have had very good defenses but still have been overall mediocre because they didn't have a top notch QB. Eventually you're going to have shootout games for one reason or another, even with a very good defense. If your offense is anemic without a QB who can make things happen then you basically have no chance in those games.

Yeah you make some good points to be sure, QB is the piece you can count on to keep you contending year after year if you find the right guy. Not at all disagreeing with that. The thing that IS unique though is that we have these guys under team control at cap friendly costs for 2-3 years, so there’s a little window that’s about to open where we could take a couple swings at a super bowl and not just one and done. And then once those guys’ contracts are up ideally at that point we have found a QB on a rookie contract ready to step in. Not going to be possible to pay a QB of that caliber AND Mclaurin, Sweat, Young, Payne, Allen, etc. It’s a good problem to have though.

I'm still somewhat mystified by people who (seem to) think Alex is the answer at QB. He's an amazing feel good story but he's an extremely average QB who is a pretty good game manager. People say he "just wins!" but how many games can you honestly point to and say "Yep, Alex Smith was one of the main reasons we won that game"?

Again, I'm not saying he's a bad QB. But he's certainly not a guy you can count on to go out and put the team on his back and throw a bunch of TDs if you're in a shootout. That's the kind of guy you might be able to sneak into the playoffs with if you have a good defense and a good running game. But you're not going to be a perennial playoff team with him, and I certainly don't think he's a guy who's going to get you a SB win unless you have an absolutely dominant defense and an excellent surrounding cast on offense.

I think your last sentence answers the first part of your post. We are building a dominant defense that won’t ever allow a shootout to occur, so having a game manager like Smith is really all we need. I do agree Smith at his age and with the injury isn’t someone we can count on at this stage. Just saying that we are in a unique situation where we’ve built a talented enough defense that we don’t need someone who can go toe to toe in a shootout for the most part. You add a Stafford or a guy of his caliber we pretty quickly become SB contenders. A game manager we still might get there though.

Once we started losing and we looked bad, I was in favor of losing if we weren't going to the playoffs or playing poorly where we were simply the best of the bad lot.  But if we both play well and make the playoffs that's a different drill for me.  I was on the record on this thread of rooting for them to beat the Steelers.  Beating them to me would be a much bigger deal than eking by the Bengals.  The Cowboys and Steelers game back to back showed me they could be a good team.  I didn't get that same vibe earlier in the season.

As for the Hurts GOAT comment.  I get the snark but save it for PFF who actually made the comment not the dude who said their comment was hyperbole. 🙄

I can see not being upset with the result of a loss AFTER the game is played. I can even get behind hoping for a loss for example in the Giants game last year which is the difference between being able to draft a Chase Young or not. Especially when the then current regime is about to pack their bags anyway. But I will never agree actively rooting for a loss or sitting watching a game and hoping for a loss with a brand new coaching regime trying to instill a winning culture with the division in reach still just so that we have a shot at a college prospect that could or could not be good. And with our track record of developing the position and the overall impatience of the fan base that seems even sillier. Your position on here is well documented for those paying attention which is you need a QB to do anything in this league and your best shot at one is tops in the draft.

Now, I do agree with your premise on the surface which is you are likelier to find that guy in the top 3 but I absolutely disagree with the premise that finishing tops in the draft and securing a Fields or Wilson or whatever outweighs the importance of instilling a brand new culture and teaching a young team filled with talent how to actually win football games. Trust me, after a 1-7 start I began to console myself with draft position too. It’s nice to have hope and excitement in the next new shiny toy coming out of school. But I just can’t ever imagine hoping the team loses going into the game, foreign concept to me. Hoping a 21 or 22 year old kid can turn around a 30 year losing program that continues to lose year over year is a tall tall task. I’d much prefer the team actually win and grow as a team and then make a (reasonable) move for a guy they believe in to be the franchise QB going forward.

The overall point though was that QBs can be had anywhere throughout the draft. Hurts is the latest example of a QB flying under the radar for whatever reason and finding some early success. No reason to root for losses (in this context) when it’s been pointed out time and time again that you don’t need a top 3 pick to find that guy. And I totally know you weren’t saying he was the GOAT, I was just making fun of the general buzz surrounding the guy. He looked good to be sure but a couple good games isn’t enough to make me believe he’s going to find long term success in this league. Though if I’m being honest with myself, I’ve always admired Hurts and his demeanor from afar, and it wouldn’t surprise me if he ends up great. He’s got the right mindset dating back to his college days. Hurts he’s on the Eagles (pun intended).

Some hyperbole below but there is something to that point which IMO makes it more pressing to find a QB.  the Eagles look a lot better with Hurts.

You were on record about a month or so back as actively rooting for the team to lose to get a higher draft pick at QB. Yet another example of a QB being picked outside the top 10. Now he’s the GOAT.

If any of the three 2020 QBs are starting Week 1 2021 rest assured we have fully embraced wasting a championship caliber defense. I'm not totally opposed to drafting a Mac Jones, but  we need someone else to start in 2021 and it cant be Allen/Haskins/Smith. They have already shown their varying ceilings, none of which can put us in actual contention for a title. Smith is a great story, but I hope it ends with him mentoring with a clipboard and not a helmet next year.

That being said, I don't have the answer to who would be a fitting Week 1 starter based on availability, but we have to get creative.

This. There’s really no justifying going into next year with the same 3 unless somehow Haskins goes off and even then I wouldn’t trust him as the franchise guy with no competition in the building. Allen is going to be here as a low cost option who knows the system. Alex is going to retire, and even if he doesn’t he can’t be counted on as the guy for a full 16 games. Haskins has his shot tomorrow but it’s not likely he cements himself as the guy down the stretch no matter how good he plays. It’s absolutely the priority number one and will be fascinating to see what direction they go. Give us a QB and we will win a Super Bowl in the next three years, guaranteed. Don’t mess it up WFT.

  6. Do not let Kyle Smith out of the building. I care less about titles and more about collaboration. This has been building for quite some time and now with an excellent coaching staff and guys like Del Rio and Rivera who are strong leaders of men you are starting to see the results play out on the field. I’m a huge fan of Smith and our drafts dating back to 2017 and think it would be a colossal mistake to let him out of the building. Do what it takes to keep that man here in charge of personnel.

Anyways, just wanted to chime in and say that QB1 HAS to be priority one this off season, though don’t see too many on here suggesting otherwise. I don’t think there’s a shot Alex is back, but I am in absolute agreement with those who believe he’s a huge component in a team that can win and a team that flounders, stats be damned.

Im also going to throw this out there but quite possible egg ends up all over my face. But Haskins is going to have a good game tomorrow and throw another wrench in this whole discussion. Will be interesting to see it all play out!
